Rubin was the only survivor of the 2008 draft while our very next draft in 2009 was only scheduled for 4 selections without an experienced GM employed for that year. It would have been nice if Savage consistently did better than guys like Jon "One and" Dunn or Isuck "while-u-sack-our-quarterback" Sowells in mid to late rounds. When the rest of our division drafts at least 9-10 players every year with well respected GMs/personnel gurus - there's ZERO room for error. Understanding how far below the rest of the division we were in the draft, now add the reality that Savage went exclusively after veteran dlinemen that came from the opposite scheme of the one our head coach was trying to get off the ground here. Is it any wonder why the home crowds never stopped chanting fire the Coordinator or fire the Head Coach? With the exception of the ONLY season Barfights Edwards set out to make football a priority in (2007) - when has he ever justified the #3 overall pick? And then came the free agent and former 1st round talent Tequila Sunrise Stallworth to raise the bar bill. Man, did he look right in an orange uniform. This is why when Dez Bryant fans were telling me all that matters is talent - I've seen red flags supercede talent much more than once. Before that, we opted to choose Antonio Bryant over taking the time to train a promising young WR like Lance Moore. FWIW, Winslow's mindless motorcycle accident subtacted his 1st 2 seasons on first round salary and signing bonus. Then he had surgeries on the shoulder and multiple knee surgeries shortly thereafter. We basically got a fraction of what his overall talent promised us prior to that life changing event. I would have LOVED to have seen the cocky kid from the U blocking Pottymouth Porter on the edge instead of the remainder of the guy on a pogostick.
Today, I'm holding out hope that players like Marcus Benard, Evan Moore, Josh Cribbs, Titus Brown, Peyton Hillis, Armond Smith and Rubin remind us that there's something special about a player who wants to PROVE himself over one showing up feeling entitled. I will get excited for all Dez Bryant fans when he completes his first full season of games scheduled. The next time will be his first time college or pro regardless of excuse volumes.
