Well interstingly I'm not sure I have a problem with it either, I was just giving you some of the reasons.

I will say I am more uncomfortable with it when it's a rookie HC taking on both duties.

And it's hard to quantify to you how many responsibilities a HC has during the week. Some HC's that DON'T call plays still spend 80 hours a week at the facility. Also, just because he has a experianced coach as his DC, Shumur would be doing himself a disservice is he wasn't some part of the game planning during the week for the defense too. It's his job on the line.

and again, it's not just about the time on the practice field. It's about the time watching film, the time designing plays, the time developing plans for certain yardage situations. Sure he can delegate some of those responsibilities during the week. But there's a group of thought that it takes away from the OC having the clear plan in his mind when others have developed some part of him for it.

Shurmur has a well defined offensive staff to help with the every day things all the way up to game plans. It's all about delegating and defining. Some HCs have been able to handle it and some haven't, might very well depend on how organized you are as a coach.

Mark Whipple is like a defacto OC. He works with the entire offenssive game plan during most practices and also works with McCoy. But a very overlooked guy is Keith Gilbertson who is the Senior Asst. for the offense. He coordinates the practices and is Shurmurs voice when he isn't around or when Shurmur is looking in on the defense. The offensive position coaches look to him and he coordinates activities with them. Same as Ray Rhodes is the Senior Asst. to Jauron on defense.

There also is Luke Steckel who is Asst. to the HC who takes care of some of the off the wall stuff like Golf was talking about. So, is is a good thing or bad thing, hard to tell until you see how he handles all the responsibility but it is being done elsewhere. I think the ultimate goal is to turn the coordinator duties over to Whipple or someone else. Seems like Shurmur wanted to install his offense the way he wanted it and wanted to make sure there wasn't a third party he had to go through to get it done.

Hopefully they are smart enough to continually evaluate how it's going and make changes as needed. I'd hope With guys like Holmgren and Haskel they are keeping a good eye on Shurmur and how he's progressing as a HC. Shurmur says he winds up in Holmgrens office a few times a week just shooting the shit, asking questions and getting advice. That has to help.

100% agree, it can either work beautifully, be so so, or fail miserably. The only thing that answer that question is time. It's not an indictment of Shurmur. He could be great at it.

Then again, it could blow up in his face. But hopefully Holmgren and the rest of the front office are involved enough to be watching closely to help guide him.

Point being, the entire organization has to work like a team. Not the case with our previous coaches and front offices which lead to the demise of some.
