how does this deal stack up around the league for LBs? Fact is Heckert drafted him and likes him. Unles they are paying him top 20% money I don't mind them locking up players for a few years. 6 mil a year isn't going to break the cap.

We have some very good players playing out the final years of their rookie contracts. Any players with value need to be locked up or we will continue to talk about depth issues for years to come. Gocong isn't spectacular but is solid and his contract isn't all guaranteed. It is a middle of the road contract that doesn't compare to the top LBs and might be team friendly towards our cap. Most of us want to see DQJ and Hillis but we need to realize that it has a lot to do with agents, languish, up front money and total guaranteed money. They should get done in time but every agent does things a different way. I'm sure the Browns would like to get both done as soon as they can but you don't sign a contract bad for the team just to get it done. I think the signing of Gocong defined what the organization is willing to do for Jackson, not much more. As for Hillis I think the organizatin is telling him they are willing to do a very reasonable contract at a high yearly rate but not at Peterson or Johnson guarantees over a long period. Hard to guarantee a big portion of a contract for a lot of years to a RB. Anyone really think, with the pounding he takes, that Hillis will be here in 4 years playing to his current level. As Mangini would say; "It's a process". |

BTW, while discussing why the Browns should be careful on Hillis' contract (and apparently are, given the timeframe thus far) Bud Shaw wrote: "Meanwhile, it's not a good time to be him. Despite his great work last year, the Browns won just a handful of games. Count the running backs in 2010 who had great (and losing) seasons. The passing game is trumping the run, and not only where the West Coast offense operates. No doubt, Hillis' receiving ability makes him a good fit here. He's not one-dimensional, at least in that sense." I'm sure Grey calls bullshit (!). |

Sorry to derail. Masters and I should go on tour with this debate and leave you guys blissfully out of it. On Gocong: Jauron likes his pass rush ability and plans to use it more. Makes sense. I can see a future with Gocong, DQJ, and somebody way faster than Fujita... who looks to be in descent to me. EDIT: This has grown on me. Gocong eventually moves to SAM and good starting WILLs can be found in round 3 (wish we'd gone after Rolle this year), plus Titus Brown looks pretty damn good to me. 4-3 linebackers are kind of devalued... but they still matter.
