Default Matt Hasselbeck

Saw somewhere in a thread someone talking about Hasselbeck and how good he was playing and it got me to wondering, WHY DIDN'T WE MAKE A PLAY TO BRING HIM IN? Holmgren was Seattle's head coach, he has ties with Hasselbeck, he went to a Superbowl with Hasselbeck, somebody tell me why Hasselbeck isn't wearing Orange and Brown right now? Would have been a perfect fit for the system, and would have given Colt more time to learn.

The only reason I could think is that he thinks that he can win a Superbowl with the Tits. I think they are good, but not Superbowl material. So somebody tell me why he isn't in Cleveland? Hasselbeck may not have come here on his own, so why didn't Holmgren try to trade for him before he was a free-agent? Can we chalk this up a blunder for Holmgren, not trying to bring in a vet to help develope his rookie QB?:

I think it was more that the FO and coaching staff wanted to see McCoy as the full-fledged starter.

Plus, no one expected Matt Hasselbeck to be playing like he is.

I would take Hasselback over a rookie Colt McCoy anyday. And I sure the hell would have taken him over Delhomme. I am not saying this with hindsight, I wanted Hasselbeck even before Shurmur was hired. Because I knew Holmgren was going to install the WCO and Hasselbeck would have been the best option to mentor Colt.

Agreed, it was about development this year, especially with the lockout looming

I've always kinda loved Hasselbeck. He's one of my favorites. He throws a great ball off a tight release. Ponder looks a lot like him, if you could split screen them.

McCoy was a third round pick, there is NO REASON to throw him in right away. They should have gotten a veteran to run the team until Colt was ready. Delhomme was a mistake right from the get-go and everyone knew it. I was hoping and praying that they would make a run for Matt, but it never happened.

I wouldn't. He's 36, he's playing great now but it's only been 4 games. 4 games against mostly mediocre or below average teams, save for Baltimore, might I add. He still has to play 12 more games. Hasselbeck is in the twilight of his career and the Titans are the better team all around so who knows if he'd have the same success here as he is having there so far. I'd rather see what we have in McCoy then bring in a vet.

Hindsight is always 20/20, it's easier to look now and go "Oh, we shoulda brought in Hasselbeck!" then it was before the season began. But what if we had done just that and he was playing god awful? Would you still want him behind center?

This season isn't really about W/L, it's all about finding out what we have. I forget who said it but someone on this board said it was a "training camp season". That's spot on. Plus Solon brings up a good point with the cap and the money we owe past employees.

No reason to not throw him in? He took over for shitty Delhomme and Wallace last year and showed he could start for this team. He didn't play lights out but he wasn't terrible last year either. You HAVE to play him. Especially on such a young team that is trying to find it's identity and has a new offensive scheme that came along with a new coach. You can't bury the kid behind an aged veteran and expect to evaluate him.

Add all this onto an unproven WR corps and an OL that suffered early injuries to key guys and was forced to use lesser quality lineman. Do you really think Hasselbeck would be lighting up defenses with our offense like he is with the Titans?

This season is all about evaluation. You don't bring in an aged, veteran QB to a team that has to find out what it has before it can move forward.

Oh and I believe Colt was ready. A new coach, unproven WR's and a new scheme that is dependent on timing more than anything to succeed = the struggle at QB you see now. I'm not saying Colt is our answer at QB but you can't find that out unless you let him play.

No, actually Hindsight had nothing to do with me wanting him. Hasselbeck is a Holmgren guy. I was actually expecting to hear someday that we traded for him or signed him, but it never happened. Everybody was baffled when we signed Delhomme (let alone signing him to that contract) Sometimes I think I can run this team better than Holmgren.

Hasselbeck didn't become a FA till this off-season.

Based on how McCoy played in 8 games last year... why would Holmgren bring in a veteran to start when he wants to see how his third round pick will do with a full season?
