| Holmgren on Clausen: "I wish I liked him more" Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 21, 2010 6:33 PM ET ProFootballTalk.com Just don't expect Holmgren to select one in the first two rounds. Holmgren never has drafted a quarterback that early before, and he doesn't plan to this year. "This year it would be pretty hard to use the second [round] pick to get a quarterback. It would be pretty hard for me," Holmgren said to Tony Grossi of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. "Next year might be easier. . . . But I'd have to have another second-round pick [to take a quarterback in the second round]." Holmgren seems likely to have a chance to take Jimmy Clausen with the seventh overall pick. But that's not going to happen either. "I wish I liked [Clausen] more," Holmgren said. "You know how you have a type of player that you like? It's not scientific. People like him a lot. He'll go high. But it would be hard for me [to take him]." Wow. Unless that's a serious misdirection play, Holmgren's candor shows why he wanted to invest so much in veteran quarterbacks this offseason |

Holmgren understands that throwing the ball for a lot of yards in HS and college is quite different than playing QB in the NFL. His approach to the game and his teammates, coupled with a lack of leadership, make him not worth the pick. I've watched Quinn and Clausen play their entire career and they're both a product of Weis' offense. Clausen is not gonna last.

BTW, Sobo (Bret Sobieski) on OBR just did a rundown on the five top quarterbacks (Bradford, Clausen, McCoy, Tebow, Pike) and really wrote a love letter to Clausen. Likes him a ton. Sobo's good. He and Steuber are very, very high on Clausen. Here's the thing: I'm not convinced that the Browns won't pick Clausen. It might be that Holmgren doesn't want Buffalo jumping up to five or six to get him, so he's saying he just doesn't like the kid. Which is REALLY unusual, by the way, as we've all noted. I wonder if there aren't a few chuckles happening in some NFL offices off of Holmgren's quote. And people saying, "Well, clearly Holmgren likes Clausen." I believe it's Sobleski, not Sobieski. And while his high opinion of Clausen is noteworthy, it doesn't undo the report by Matt Miller at New Era Scouting that the Browns' scouts gave Clausen a late 1st round grade. The reporters at theOBR have told you basically the same thing. Ironically, Sobo also had one of the lowest grades on Dirty last year - I believe he had Sanchez in the 2nd round. I mostly agreed with you on Sanchez; otherwise, I would have thrown that one at you all day long |
