Shurmur feisty as Browns practice sloppily
By Jeff Schudel
JSchudel@News-Herald.com

Head coach Pat Shurmur was in a feisty mood Friday morning when the Browns started practice sloppily.

He yelled at one player for lining up incorrectly – which player was unclear to reporters – and yanked Montario Hardesty from a drill when Hardesty dropped a pass over the middle when no one was defending him.

Chris Ogbonnaya replaced Hardesty, was thrown the identical pass by Colt McCoy, and caught it easily.

On the injury front, cornerback Joe Haden practiced for the first time since spraining his left knee Oct. 2 in the game against the Titans.

Running back Peyton Hillis (hamstring) and linebacker Scott Fujita (concussion) did not practice.

Hardesty would start if Hillis cannot play, but Ogbonnaya would likely get some playing time because Shurmur likes the way he blocks and catches the ball. Kaluka Maiava would replace Fujita.

Eh I see it as a young coach experiencing growing frustrations. Hardesty has skill, we've all seen it, but blocking isn't one of those strengths. I think that's why we picked Ogbonnaya up was for his blocking skills, not sure how he runs. I am confident Hardesty's is not in jeopardy... unless he has a serious slump or something. He runs hard, he just needs to be a better blocker, IMO.

We had a pretty good draft, and I'd like to start seeing some results.
Fans already looking to next year and I don't blame them.
I think we will have things to be excited about that we lacked last year and we have some real facepalm moments just like last year.
It's going to be tough.
We aren't Barking Hard for nothing.
WOOF WOOF WOOF!

I'm still pissed we let go of Vickers. "He has no hands" was the justification. Well, great-fucking-call guys.
Here's a vid (skip the 45 seconds of total fucking weirdness in the beginning) of what we let go and is now causing our short game to suffer.

When Vickers blocked, he didn't jsut engage defenders - he flat took them completely out of the play. We are missing that severely. Oh, and he never dropped as many passes his entire career here as Hardesty has in the last two games.

Hardesty better figure out how to catch or his playing time is going to be numbered.

Yes, the Browns are giving up on a kid they traded up in the draft to take in the 2nd round because he has struggled in his first couple of games. 5 games into the season and we're losing our minds over Holmgren's not wanting to be buried in Cleveland, and now Montario is on the cut list.

Losing Vickers is a question of scheme. Vickers is not the FB for the WCO. And Vickers may not have dropped as many balls as Hardesty because we never threw him enough balls to drop because .... well he couldn't catch.

I like Vickers. Liked the way he blocked. But give it up folks he doesn't fit the scheme. If you want we can go back to the days of completing 2-15 passses and losing 9-6. That scheme seems to be working in Miami where another coach cannot win a football game.

If Vickers doesn't fit a WCO scheme, I wonder why HOU signed him, considering they run a version of WCO.

Bingo.

And we aren't running much of anything right now, scheme-wise.

scheme-schmeme. We allowed an elite player (at his position) walk away, which hurts our only proven weapon.

Remember when we'd give away our talent we used to get something in return? #Winslow #Edwards

Now we let guys like Rogers and Vickers, Roth, go into free agency. The highlight of our current FO is draft day. THAT'S IT. Watching these guys bumble-fuck their way through the season is making me miss Mangini and his "I'm with stupid" Tshirt (pointing to Dbs)

Yeah, it's become ABSURD. He often looks not even close to making the catch. And this is a kid who came into the league with a rep for being a good receiver!

It's in his head now. He's gotta make a few catches to get it out. He looks like a damn good running back to me, but he's gonna have to catch and block to stay on the field.

Not that I'm in a hurry to give up on Hardesty but, HATS off to Alo for recommending Oby-wanna-carry-or-catchy a LONG time ago. Okay, earlier this year isn't that long ago. Anyway, I was recommending some other orphan and I liked his rationale of the work history he and McCoy shared.

Exactly!!! 6 drops in the last two games plus a drop in practice on Friday that caused Shurmur to bench him in practice for a while in favor of the new guy - Ogbannayawhateverhisnameis.

That's really causing issues on your buddy Flugel's fantasy football life. I drafted Hillis for his rushign and recptions volume so I added Hardesty who ONCE had a very good reputation for his reception volume on the college level. He had the 2nd highest reception volume among all the top backs in his draft class.

Thanks, Tom.

I'm really surprised that Hardesty's having so much trouble catching the ball: it was one of his best attributes coming out of Tennessee. Could be a mental thing, like Little's drops during camp.
