Default Interesting stat of the week....

With the new mandatory 5 day off rule during the bye week, teams coming off the bye week are 1-5, with the sole winner being Denver.

It's a small glimmer of hope, but some nonetheless (9ers are coming off a bye)

It's amazing how many of these new rules to "protect" the players are now affecting the quality of the football too.

I don't get teh "5 day off rule" I get "no contact for 5 days and maybe 2-3 days off" so that players can rest and heal. But you can't bring them in and have them go over film?

This rule isn't even a "protect" players one. It's something the players wanted in the new CBA. It likely ties into the idea that the 18 game schedule can be revisited later.

but I think they wanted it to "protect" themselves from injury, so that they weren't practicing as much.

It will be interesting to see how this works out with a bigger sample in a few weeks.

Maybe, or at least that might the the pretense they used to justify it.

Here is another interesting stat:

Quote:
Smith's 95.2 passer rating is 21 points higher than his career mark. But his attempts, completions and yards are the second-fewest of any QB ranked in the top 20. Six of Smith's eight TDs have gone to tight ends Vernon Davis and Delanie Walker. Frank Gore's physical running is the key to what they do.
So basically Alex Smith is dinking and dunking and the reason it works is because of the running game. So if we can stuff the run we can make Alex Smith try and beat us. If we stuff the run we can take away the play action to his TE's.

I think up front we can make this possible with Taylor and Rubin, and Mitchell and Sheard.

Slow down that running game, get their offense off the field, and get our running game going.

I buy that one. I think an 18 game schedule is on the horizon. Once the players see the value in less padded/contact practices and less wear and tear during the season, they may come on board with 18 games.

there will also be an interesting battle of special teams. Since our ex coordinator is there now. I expect our special teams to play much better in this game. As a source of pride.

Not only that, but that have the one and only Blake Costanzo holding down their special teams unit. I miss the heck out of that guy...

Same. If Costanzo is on the team right now, Jacoby Ford doesn't return that kickoff for a TD.

Now Costanzo and Cribbs get a chance to collide!
