coincidentally he earned it the same week Momass is recovering from a concussion. Lets hope he thrives though, we can always use another WR.

I caught that line yesterday from Shurmer and chuckled too. I guess it's possible they could have stuck with Cribbs, Norwood, Robo, and Little at WR only, and used the spot vacated by a missing MoMass for some other position. But that wasn't very likely.

and this isn't some "trick" specific to Shumur. I've heard lots of coaches do the same thing in the past. "He earned his right to be active/start" when it's obvious if the origininal starter was healthy, the new player wouldn't have earned anything. It's CoachSpeak. But again, we all agree. GO MITCHELL!

I get you guys making fun of the "earned it" statement, but I think it is a valid statement where a backup works hard, improves, and waits for his opportunity. For whatever reason, coaches in many sports stick with their depth charts and incumbent starters and often require veterans to be truly outplayed for a relatively long stretch before they make a move. It is sort of like the old WWF rule where a champion couldn't be lose his title on account of a count out or disqualification. Robo is a clear example of this. Was he really outperforming Norwood and Mitchell by so much in practice that he was the clear option to be active despite his disappearing acts every Sunday? I obviously don't know the answer to this, but my money is on "doubtful." The real question is, now that Mitchell is getting an opportunity, is he going to make something out of it? |

Interesting quotes from Mitchell in today's Cabbot article about him being fine with simply "clearing things out" for other guys underneath. At least we know somebody in Berea is talking about the need to pull the safeties back with deep routes. I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see Mitchell get all of Momass' normal snaps (leaving Cribbs in his normal role instead of bumping him up into Momass').
