Cleveland Browns RB Montario Hardesty to miss games with calf injury; team will try out running backs Tuesday

Published: Monday, October 31, 2011, 2:02 PM Updated: Monday, October 31, 2011, 2:34 PM
By Mary Kay Cabot, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Browns running back Montario Hardesty "will miss games'' with a moderate tear in his right calf, coach Pat Shurmur said.

Shurmur said he's not sure how many games Hardesty will miss, "but it's going to take some time to heal.''

He said running back Peyton Hillis is still being evaluated day to day with a pulled hamstring and that the Browns will try out running backs Tuesday.

He said "there are no excuses'' even though the team has been without Hillis, Hardesty and Brandon Jackson (toe) for all or parts of the season.

The Browns are currently down to Chris Ogbonnaya, who was signed off the Texans practice squad Oct. 18. Shurmur said if Ogbonnaya had been hurt, fullback Owen Marecic would've been the lone tailback.

The Browns also have running back Armond Smith on the practice squad. Shurmur said Josh Cribbs can do a lot of things, including playing in the backfield.

at least Hillis went to the SF game and actually looked like he cared....well he looked really frustrated..could have been about performance ( ie I coulda got 9 yards outa that). last week hillis looked like he could care less.

hopefully he's up for next week( he has a lot to prove imo, like I WANT to play, and I CAN play)

ya know, I can semi understand.. I run a martial arts school and over the past 29 years have pulled a hammy ...often ..and yes it takes time to recover... groin pulls alone can take a year or more

but at their level and pay?... fuck that ...tough it out

It's one of the best possible landing spots for Choice, and an indictment of Ryan Torain's minuscule production the past three weeks. Choice was having an abysmal year for the Cowboys before his release, averaging just 2.7 yards on 28 carries while battling a number of minor injuries, but could be in the mix for carries as early as this week depending on how he looks in practice. If you're a Torain or Roy Helu owner, there's little justification for not taking a flier. Oct 31 - 4:31 PM

Tashard Choice would have been a good choice. Two weeks would be the best-case scenario for a torn calf, The Browns may bring back Thomas Clayton From what I heard. I don't remember him at all from last year.. He had 1 carry.. There are other experienced guys out there. Not sure who fits though.

What ever happened to James Davis? I remember he showed some promise when he was here.

I loved Hillis last year..I think most of this shit is due to his agent ( why'd he fire 2?)

Can we call this guy a bust yet???

He's pretty impressive when he plays, but damn...what has he played maybe 4 games in two years? With known injury issues and it just keeps coming?

And yet they treat Hillis like a red-headed bastard step child. Yeah, he probably deserves some of it 'cause of his agent but still...

I predict we are drafting a RB in the 1st round.

sounds to me liked Smith is going to "earn" his way back on to the active roster..........
