Default Dear Santa: AP All American Teams

Christmas lyrics imply it's the most wonderful time of the year so let's take a look at what this means to Cleveland Browns fans. Here's a conglomeration of studly prospects from the Associated Press we can only dream about. Ironically, the draft will probably have the QBs in a different chronological order. Luck will be the 1st QB drafted and your buddy Flugel thinks Matt Barkley will be #2 (even if he's spoiled with elite perimeter talent in college that he won't see on BAD NFL teams). I don't think we should mortgage all future drafts for either kid when RGIII might have the best gun, vision and scramble speed in the universe where we might not have to trade anybody to get him. If we're gonna treat him to more Greg Little can't-catchies and Shawn Lauvao Oooopsie-daisies, let's take comfort in knowing the QB has world class speed. Kind of like what Vick needed when his LT was Kevin Olay Shaffer in pass protection.

There's a DE below, Melvin Ingram from the land of South Carolina Gamecocks that is one of the better DEs I've seen in recent years. Unlike Robert Quinn or Jayme Mitchell, his NFL team won't have to explore ways to hide his ass vrs the run. He's brilliant at stoutness vrs the run and he can play in 1 or 2 gap schemes. The reason I like this kid is he plays with terrific leverage out of the stance so he can rag-doll many opponents/blockers. He also plays with a firm understanding of the importance to maintain outside leverage throughout a pass rush. When you come in at the anticipated depth of QB dropback/plant - you NEVER let the guy escape around you. You fore him to either try to duck inside where Quite often it makes the QB belly back further, or step up to scramble which should have our DTs all over the QB.

We also need WRs, OLBers, Safeties, a Corner, an OG, 4 calling birds, 3 French hens, 2 Turtle Doves and a Partridge in a Pear Tree. Well probably see a lot of these Pipe Dreams in Bowl Games so remember this list as you check out matchups in the near future. Enough from me - here's a cut and paste of the AP All American Teams.

It is indeed when his official stats aren't even aware of it during the 13 games he's played in of the 14 his team participated in. Perhaps even funnier when we reflect on the context of our debate. Unfortunately or fortunately, you don't even need to draft a great special teams player - see Josh Cribbs. Our debates centered around whether he was worthy of a 6th pick overall and my concern was that he wasn't ready to be stout vrs the run. JJ Watts, who has blocked 1 kick, also has good stats vrs the run and he has a decent number of sacks when a team in our shoes needed stoutness vrs the run as well as pass rushing ability. For what it's worth, JJ's team is the proud owner of first place for the first time in their existence while the Rams are earning a spot to draft in the top 5. Meanwhile, Sheard has quietly had a good season here as a 2nd round draft pick. The Rams were drafting before us when they landed Bradford in 2010, after us when they landed Quinn in 2011 and now projecting to go before us again. Was that winning difference made with a part time skillset? Not yet, hence the reason we debated.

In the context of me thinking Quinn wasn't ready to be the winning impact he clearly hasn't been in St Louis, he might emerge into a complete player his team won't have to worry about vrs the run in the future. I still think he CAN be good in the future; but asking him to be THE difference maker at #6 overall as a rookie with limited experience would have made me feel like I was asking far too much of him in our situation. Adding Phil Taylor to Rubin has made all the difference in the world for D'Qwell's effectiveness inside. We did okay when we consider adding a 1st round pick in 2012 to a guy that has helped Jackson's reputation league-wide grow. I was a HUGE critic of D'Qwell before Taylor became his bouncer inside. Plus, Sheard has been a bright spot at DE so this isn't anything we should lose sleep over. Now we can look forward to 2 first round picks as we check out some of the All Americans this Bowl season.

Here's a little comparison of Quinn and JJ and the guy we took in round 2 - Sheard.
Quinn:

JJ Watt:

Jabaal Sheard (possibly a better bang for the buck than BOTH guys we debated over):

When a guy makes first team All American as a soph WR - he's really talented. Before we give his current QB too much credit, he was already considered that elite in comparison to all WRs his age coming out of high school. It would be REALLY wonderful if we could ever offer our QB this luxury.

I could see us drafting any of the other 3 kids above after Andrew Luck goes off the board first.

To me the no brainer's if available are Blackmon and Rg3...The next best available Offensive skill position is a must... be it Rb? so be it! Yes DE is a must...I agree...but in my world , in this day and age...If we can't average 21 pts a game. we will never even reach 8-8

LOL! I will. I've actually told you I think Quinn is going to be a good football especially when his team plays with more leads and he improves against the run. 2 things that are probably going to be inevitable. Knowing that, Cleveland or St Louis wasn't the perfect place for a pass rushing specialist to be as a rookie. Nobody smart has wasted very much time throwing on either defense when running the ball on them as remained as easy as it has been.

If you get a chance this Bowl Season and you want to see a promising prospect at DE, check out Melvin Ingram of South Carolina.
