Some others I can't recall at the moment but it put things into a different perspective for me. And he also said the team who drafts him has to be willing to tailor the offense to his strengths. Are the Browns willing to do that? I guess bottom line for me is if the Browns are going after him I would only do so by not giving up anything. If he's there when our turn comes then roll the dice if that's your plan but trading up shouldn't be an option. |
Very insightful post. We've already seen the ego of Mike Holmgren isn't willing to use sand lot football formations to overcome the lack of talent assembled on the perimeter so a coach that would have CONSIDERED playing to his talents already got his walking papers. The current
"yes sir" type broke the Cribbs at QB formation out 1 week and we never saw it again. The fans LOVED it but I think Homgren gave him an earful of
"we didn't bring you here to do that nonsense."
Regarding RGIII, 2 of his strengths were the 2 OGs built like John Deere Tractors and played like John Deere Tractors. Our OGs were weaknesses up front so you can pretty much forget that inside scissors play unless the job description reads Hollywood Stunt man. The biggest strength I see is the scheme giving him wide open targets all over the joint also meaning pases don't need to be perfect. In the 3 games I've seen this kid play, I have not seen any routes contested to know if he fits the ball in air tight spaces vrs corners with NFL closing speeds. We basically haven't heard of RGIII until 2011 to have a lot of information on this last minute sensation. YES, he has a Michael Vick cannon and Michael Vick wheels. Is there a Pro Football QB that gets hurt more often than Vick? What if James Harrison was on his schedule twice a year with Steel Orphans paying all his head hunting fines? They've always had the green light to end promising QB's careers - take a peak at what they did to Carson Palmer's career when they took a knee. Meanwhile, Vince Young was
very successful BEFORE he pulled his hammy and groin together for the first time. All of a sudden a spread offense kind of guy was confined to being a pocket passer as the uncontested routes virtually disappeared before his eyes when he could no longer run.
I'm not saying RGIII CANNOT be the guy. I'm saying Cleveland doesn't give him 1 thing he was recently spoiled with. This can be a culture shock of a lifetime. Steve Young learned how cruel fans and media can be when going to a team exactly like the Browns in Tampa was like when he had to keep reading how bad he sucked. Pretty funny when he was handed NFL caliber weapons he posted some of the best passer ratings of all time. Who knew? Not Tampa - that's for sure. If that doesn't work, ask Drew Brees how much it sucked to read:
"It's obvious San Diego needs to draft a REAL QB with their first overall pick." Turns out all they REALLY had to do was add Gates and McCardell to LaDanian Tomlinson. When Brees was given 3 prongs of attack as opposed to 1 prong of attack (at RB only) - it was eggs-actly like removing 2 hand cuffs and a ball and chain as a star was allegedly born. Brees was always a stud - it was up to the front office to surround him with tools for success. Until they did such a thing - they had incomplete assessment variables providing them with a false negative.
This front office hasn't done that yet or we would see WRs that can run and catch consistently. Leading the league in dropped passes slam dunks otherwise. There's a reason Jeff Garcia makes Pro Bowls in other places and leads 2 different teams to playoffs AFTER he leaves Cleveland as an alleged failure. It's called better front office efficiency. Right now, our front office is contemplating making RB a pressing need after Hillis treated us to 61 receptions, over 1100 rushing yards and a 4.4 yards per carry vrs 10 men in the box in 2010.
What's been the most frustrating thing about watching the Browns promise a wonderful 3-4 defense or WCO is the front office has NEVER been up to snuff with getting the scheme compatible guys for us to knopw what a REAL 3-4 defense shoudl play like or WCO predicated of the talent of Jerry rice on the perimeter. All we EVER do is allow the Pittsburgh Steelers to draft guys like LaMarr Woodley, Mike Wallace, Antonio Brown, and Ben Roehtlisberger AFTER we drafted OUR guys. THEN, we spend every December wanting to see a Head Coach or QB getting their walking papers. We just alternate - this year we're back to assuring ourslves that a QB 21 starts old in this chaos defines the QB just like all those Charger fans once prematurely defined Brees or those Tampa fan defined Steve Yougn or those Dallas fans preferred Steve Walsh to Troy Aikman. Having said ALL that, I want us to draft a QB regardless of thinking we just needed to get the current slew of QBs more help. My favorite pick of this entire draft is Andrew Luck; but I'm a Browns' fan where there has been no such thing as Luck for quite some time.
Point? If we're going to draft a QB - then don't sentence us to stone hands Little EVERY 3rd down. COMMIT to the young man so he can be successful. Get the kid some help instead of enjoying the handcuffs and ball and chain effect. USE free agency this time around. I ran my yap last year about refraining from it and I was as WRONG as it gets. Having said that, I researched Julio Jones up the wazoo long before the combines and tried to show alot of his critics he was better than many were crediting him for being as the improved numbers epitomized.
