7-round Browns Mock Draft v. 1.0

Cleveland Browns 2012 NFL Mock Draft version 1.0.

The 2012 NFL Draft is still on the horizon. However, for Cleveland Browns fans, it is the most exciting time of the year. The amount of significant holes in the Browns organization has diminished since Tom Heckert has taken the reigns in the Browns front office.

But, one huge deficiency remains for the Browns.

Offensive playmakers.

You have heard that phrase repeated over and over the last couple of years from many writers and pundits. I've been saying it myself for as long as I can remember.

This year, though, looks to be different as General Manager Tom Heckert agrees with that sentiment. Heckert stated the Browns, "want playmakers, so we have to get them somewhere".

He also stated to the contrary that the Browns would not pass up a top defensive talent early in the draft.

I love this mock!

With Couples, we could solidify our D-Line for the next 10 - 12 years and Wright would fill the playmaker on the outside. If James falls to us (I can see someone grabbing him in the second) then I'll be ecstatic.

To many people knock James because of size, injuries and character. I hope he will be there in the third as well.

If RGIII is on the board at #4 and the Browns opt not to go for a QB, I would fully expect a trade down with a team like Miami or Washington.

I like Coples, but I can't take him at #4. I'd rather go for a guy with just as much upside later in round one like Whitney Mercilus, or Melvin Ingram in the 15-25 range.

But, I like where you're heads at, although I think RGIII would be our selection.

Coples isn't a good fit for the Browns' defense. Jauron values speed over size, and Q doesn't offer much of the former.

I like his speed and quickness on the field... 4.75 40.

He may not be a Top 5 pick, however the Browns might move down and let someone move into their slot to take RGIII but I still like Coples.

Plus, he bulked up to play DT in past seasons but is down in weight again. I've seen he weighs anywhere from 265-285 depending on where you look.

However, I will say that Jabaal Sheard isn't extremely fast, but he has a great burst off of the snap and solid strength.

I think Coples could fit, but there's no way I'm touching him at 4.

It seems like every year, Browns fans are going to want to reach for a pass rusher out of UNC.

Next year, people will talk about Paige-Moss with pick 5.

Draft notebook: Tar Heels' final impression will last, and hurt too

In the weeks leading to the draft, NFL general managers are often asked to give team owners a video snapshot of the players they are targeting with early-round selections.

Some owners, of course, have more say than others in the evaluation process but many like to see for themselves the young men who could soon be their employees.
Some owners specifically ask to see players' final games -- especially rivalries or bowl games. The thought process is easy to follow: A player worthy of a first- or second-day pick should stand out in their final big game as a collegian.

General managers considering using a top-100 selection on a University of North Carolina defender may have to think twice about showing his team's owner the Independence Bowl. The effort put forth by several prominent prospects was shameful.

Defensive end Quinton Coples entered the 2011 season ranked by many pro scouts as the elite senior prospect in the country, regardless of position. The 6-6, 285-pound

Coples had earned All-ACC honors at defensive tackle in 2010 registering 59 tackles, including 15.5 tackles for loss and 10 sacks. He was moved outside for his senior season in the hopes that he'd be even more troublesome for opponents but instead saw his numbers drop in every category.

NFLDraftScout.com has learned that teammates and members of the UNC coaching staff approached Coples midseason about moving back inside to help the Tar Heels get more explosive pass rushers on the edge. Coples declined. His reason, according to a source, was that moving back inside could call into question his versatility and thereby compromise his draft stock.

Though Coples registered two tackles for loss against Missouri, his undisciplined rushes up-field opened up gaping holes that the Tigers exploited for 337 rushing yards -- nearly 10 times that of which UNC (36 yards) was able to accomplish on the ground Monday.

Perhaps most alarming, it wasn't just the seniors who played poorly for North Carolina. Junior inside linebacker Kevin Reddick, a junior thought to be considering making the jump to the NFL early, was virtually invisible. Playing against a Missouri offense that ran simple zone-reads up the middle the majority of the game, Reddick registered just four total tackles, only two of which were solos.

I'm sorry I disagree on Coples still. A player is not 1 or 2 games—he is all of his games AND his potential.

but if that report is true, then he's merely a me-first selfish player that will not put the team ahead of himself....aka, butterfingers edwards. no thanks...players like this only cause locker room problems.

Quinn and Coples are entirely different players. The former -- like Sheard -- possesses the first step explosion you want in a top-flight pass rusher. Quinn is more explosive, but he's still learning the intricacies of the position. And as a lot of folks said at draft time, Sheard already had the repertoire of rush moves to be effective from Day One.
