The Cleveland Browns are contemplating hiring an offensive coordinator to take over the play calling from coach Pat Shurmur, according to league sources. AFC North blog ESPN.com's Jamison Hensley writes about all things AFC North in his division blog. The sources said former Vikings coach Brad Childress is the leading candidate. Childress, who sat out this season after being fired by Minnesota in 2010, was the Philadelphia Eagles' offensive coordinator when Shurmur was Philadelphia's quarterbacks coach. Childress also would provide Shurmur with an experienced head coach on the offensive side to help Shurmur manage the game as he continues to grow into the job. Shurmur is struggling through his first season as a head coach after spending the past two seasons as St. Louis' offensive coordinator. Entering play Sunday, the Browns (4-11) had the 29th ranked offense and are averaging just 13.9 points per game, which is 30th overall. Chris Mortensen is a senior NFL analyst for ESPN.

Childress would be a fine addition. As for Favre.. I'm betting Childress has a few choice words about him too.. ha ha ha. 3 consecutive championship games as OC for Philli and McNabb made 5 probowls with this guy as OC and even made the playoffs with Tavaris jackson as his QB. This guy has a VERY soid resume. Knows the system... I don't know if he's the best guy for the job..but we could do a lot worse that's for sure.

Yeah like Rif said I don't think it could get worse. Shurmur by himself is drowning.

If they are keeping Shurms as coach which they obviously are, no way should he continue in this current role it would be inherently stupid. That being said it wouldn't shock me if that is what they do. I mean, I am not trying to fry this guy, but let us not forget what we witnessed this year, this guy sucked, talent or not. He can't handle one role let alone two of the biggest ones, so a change should not even be in question. He should not be calling the plays for this team if he remains head coach.

I doubt this story. They'll give Shurmur another year, when he'll have a real off season, hopefully playmakers at WR, Steiny, a replacement for our one-legged RT, and something more than a 3rd string RB from the practice squad. I doubt Shurmur as much as the next guy, but once the emotion of a losing season settles, calmer heads will keep things the same.
