Default Report: Vincent Jackson to hit Free Agency

Report: Vincent Jackson unlikely to get franchise tag

Now that we know the Chargers will return the same coach and general manager next season, we can move on to discussing the future makeup of their roster.

One of the first decisions they have to make has to do with wide receiver Vincent Jackson, who can be an unrestricted free agent after playing under the franchise tag this season. The Chargers can franchise him again for more than $13 million, sign him to a long-term deal or let him walk. Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the first of those options is unlikely since the Chargers don’t want to devote that kind of money to a receiver when they have several other holes to fill.

A long-term deal for Jackson hasn’t been of much interest to the Chargers in the past. His 2010 season was marred by an ugly holdout and injury issues, but there’s little doubt about his value to the team when he’s healthy. Jackson had 60 catches for 1,106 yards and nine touchdowns this season, his third year in the last four with at least 1,000 yards and seven scores.

A.J. Smith’s past dealings with free agents haven’t always gone too smoothly and Chargers fans need only look to New Orleans for a reminder of players who have moved on after finding better offers than they got in San Diego. It will be interesting to see if the past hesitancy to make a long-term deal for Jackson foreshadows a difficult negotiation this offseason.

We reportedly inquired about a trade for him multiple times in 2010 so it should be interesting to see if we make a big play.

He's got the talent, but I will say i watched him cause Rivers to throw several picks this year where he incorrectly broke off a route or wasn't aggressive going after the ball. Tread gently with this guy.

If he hits FA, GRAB HIM! He is a veteran WR and can actually catch the ball. He may have character issues but I'm tired of passing on guys because they get labeled as bad dudes.

As a free agent.. he's a winner for us.. He's not perfect, no one is..but he sure has something we have not had since the return.. I doubt they let him leave.

Any star WR on the FA market is gonna have ? marks about him.

Just get ready to see Lerner overpay for anybody of star quality who actually agrees to come here.

Browns have a ways to go beyond deluxe training facilities and great brunches to attract players.

Jackson would of course be a huge plus to the wr corps. I'm sure he is drooling right now, think of how a mc coy or wallace is gonna get him to the all star game.

Of course the Browns will have to overpay to get a playmaker here but it's something they have to do. They can't fill the need for playmakers with just the draft alone.

I don't think there is any doubt that the Browns will go after a serious playmaker or two in FA. If they don't, then I have no idea what they were doing last offseason sitting on their hands. I thought the whole purpose was to make a huge push this year to fill in the missing pieces, and there are actually a lot of options as compared to last year's shit crop.

I'm just saying, you have to still be careful with cats like Jackson. It may be better to overpay for a guy who stays healthy and hasn't had the issues in the past. Plus, I'm telling you he screwed Rivers up more then a couple times this year with MoMass type shit.

No doubt Riffer and I totally agree with everything you're saying. We still gotta take the chance though if we wanna grab a FA who can make a big impact right away.

Yeah I agree with Riff to a point, and I always worry about the effort a guy will put forward once he gets paid in FA, but I'd take him over Mesean from Philly Or Holmes.

And that's what it boils down to because those are the three really really good WR's available this offseason.

Kendall Wright, Little and Vincent Jackson would be a top NFL WR corps

Will it happen? No probably not.
