IIRC he joined the Jets as Oline coach in 2007 and up until this season his unit has been the best part of their whole squad.
More than that though is the whole resume, the whole package. Callahan is well regarded throughout the NFL as a great guy to mentor QB's, notice I said NFL and not Andy Reid's coffee klatsch, he's been a very successful OC, successful QB Coach and a successfull HC for the entire season he lasted in the black hole. That's the kinda guy Cleveland needs in the OC position. It would have been smart of them to call him up, hound him, call in a favor from Gruden to put in a word to him and did whatever it took to get him through the door and mentoring Shurmur, I mean the Offense. Unfortunately we're not dealing with smart people.
On a side note I love the name Hudson Houck so it'll be a bummer not hearing that name mentioned during Dallas games anymore. It was always good for a laugh when the announcers would call out his name. |
Why are you calling me Shep? I disagreed how wonderful Bill Callahan is. Nothing personal at you so no need for high intensity to follow my reply. I'm just going to share my recollections of Bill Callahan and none of them are meant to be insulting to you. I like an overwhelming majority of your takes - I just don't dig Callahan.
I understand what Callahan's position was. The Jets running game and passing game slid considerably in 2011. There's quite a sum of 1st round draft picks in that offense. If they had trouble running the ball and protecting the passer in 2011, the first place I look is the oline he was in charge of. When they played against Baltimore in particular, NO oline did worse than his vrs them (even our's). And if we have to break out an injury excuse - well, we know he wouldn't be able to handle what goes on in Cleveland right?
The Callahan I remember is the guy that had Nebraska punting on 3rd down and going for it running up the middle on 4th and 8. He did some really mind boggling stupid things there. And then when he took over Gruden's talented team in Oakland, I'll give him credit that there was no brand new enforcements of the tuck rule screwing them out of SB Sunday. You always liked pointing that out when you wanted to say Brady and BB were overrated so you thought of Oakland as a team that MADE the SB if not for some unfair officiating. Therefore, the team knocking on the door of a SB finally made one under Callahan or perhaps via Gannon's audibles to more sensible plays. Unfortunately, his offense threw something like 4 INTs for TDs to Tampa's defense as if they had zero clue about their opponent or they were just that unprepared. Either way, it didn't take long for that offense and team to crumble into rationale for Callahan's release.
If he's a really special mind - he doesn't salute a young Brian Shootsinheineys with
"yes sir." He'd be coordinating the offense at least at his next hire after fire. You don't go from Head Coach to position coach if you're out there acing your coaching career. Usually, one takes a smaller step down to a Coordinator position UNLESS the rest of the league wasn't interested in him. And now we understand the Jets offered him his most favorable contract as an Oline Coach. That's what the NFL market told him he was so that's what he became.
I SHARE much of your frustration with Mangini getting tossed for an enormous step backward. Having said that, I'm not gonna go way out of my way to pretend a lack of consideration for Bill Callahan is an epic mistake here. There's easier things to criticize like giving our QBs no playmakers in a WCO and keeping a WR on the field that drops seemingly 100% of the 3rd down throws hitting his hands.
