Bernie has friends all over the NFL -- yet he has no job. Surprising or not that shouldn't be an arrow in the back of the Browns current FO.
Not saying that is where you're coming from, but a few here have called the Browns brainless for not hiring Tressel or Kosar. Homegrown homers? |
It was just an idea BEFORE Chilly was added. I like Chilly even if it ain't popular. We're not asking him to be the Head Coach - we're asking him to coach where his strength is. I had some fun in the thread about him but I closed with saying it was a good addition IMO. I don't get where people dislike how far the Philly organization evolved from earning the right to draft 1st overall (if we weren't rejoining the league in 99) to frequenting the NFC playoffs from 2000-2010. We're quite a bit smarter than Philly fan here to understand what epic progress that was while they're still contemplating what culd have been with Ricky Williams.
Vegas, here's where I'm at overall. I want Holmgren to succeed in spite of things I wrote out of frustration. My Irish blood always does my steering when I swing first and rationalize later. It's really this simple. If Holmgren becomes as good of a front office person with Jimmys and Joes as he was at coaching up the Xs and Os - cha-ching! The hobby of following our favorite team has a much better reward for doing so. I think what Heckert is doing on the defensive side of the ball shows that's a great pillar for us. Aside from that, we've seen what he is capable of at drafting the WR position if we see what Maclin and Jackson teamed up to accomplish in 2009 and 2010.
If I'm going to stick up for Mangini for inheriting chaos before him - then I have to do the same for Holmgren. BTW, I also do it for the hand selected QB that doesn't have any tools to work with just yet. The COOL thing there is if McCoy is a mistake it's only as costly as a late 3rd round pick can be. I still remember Holmgren saying he didn't expect McCoy to be IMMEDIATE; so I think there's been a lot of unfairness about the kid. It took Alex Smith 7 years, Drew Brees 4 years, Troy Aikman 3 years and Steve Young 3 years + Jerry Rice + all the other goodies in the SF organization. Werten't all those guys gifted enough for an S on the chest as rookies? Well, their salaries implied it and yet none of that change inexperience, growing pains and inherited chaos around them.
Regardless of my opinion about McCoy, we will now be in a position to draft one of the highest rated QBs the 2012 draft has to offer us. I'm pretty sure we will draft a QB in round 1 and no later than round 2 to come here. Let's be honest, the supply for the QB demand hasn't exactly been kind since Holmgren and Heckert got the gig (ie: Christian Ponder and Blaine Gabbert). In case people forgot, St Louis drafted Sam Bradford at #1 overall, Jimmy Clausen went in round 2 and Colt McCoy went in late round 3. Turns out McCoy has the best ratings of all 3 overall so we weren't the ones overpaying. Thank God Heckert & Holmgren knew enough to let Arizona take Kevin Kolb. I remembered some thinking it was the end of the world when we were about to witness the sum of Larry Fitzgerald plus Kevin Kolb.
