I opened this thread and...
1. saw Chilly Willy hired as OC
2. and Pattycakes to still call his own plays
3. then vomited in the trashcan

Maybe I overdid it on the fenugreek seeds, maybe it was the news, maybe both.

The hiring makes sense.. It's not the sexiest pick, but the guy flat out knows this offense. It's a job he is well suited to. HC was too much for him.. But he knows this offense and can certainly pick up Shurmurs variation of it quite easily. He should be a big help to Shurmur and to the offense in general.

Now to address the BIGGEST issue.. players that can make things happen on the field.. UMMM we need some.. His job will be much easier with playmakers.. Best OC in the world could not excell with this roster as it stands right now.. Not even the master Bill Walsh himself... he would probably quit if handed our offensive roster.

Hey Bill.. your best playmaker is a rookie who caught 2 td's and led the league in dropped passes... followed by your kick returner who caught 41 balls in his best ever season in 8 years".. "I'm outa here"

What the F*%k, why hire an "offensive coordinator" if he's not calling plays???? The so-called genius (Walrus) is looking more stupid by the day.

I contend that if the Browns become good its all Heckert. Incoming players are all drafted by the man and Holmgren gets street cred for it

Childress stars in Patch Adams movie:

He'll fit right in. He'll be up above looking down on the field and wired into Shurmur's ear. Can you imagine some of the conversations?

Chilly: I see something
Shurm: Are ya sure?
Chilly: No, I can't tell if they are shadows, 13 ghosts or 11 defenders playing like 16.
Shurm: Did you take your meds?
Chilly: You don't take meds when you drink beer like a man.
Shurm: Good point! I'm so glad we hired your ass!
Chilly: Your QB might have a concussion.
Shurm: Thank God somebody understands why I don't let our QBs audible.
Chilly: Any alternatives?
Shurm: Do you have a Rosary?
Chilly: No but I got some Crispy Crunch and Bazooka Joe bubble gum.
Shurm: We need a QB - do you have any yellow pages up there?
Chilly: Not yet but we come from that same coaching tree where "yes sir" goes along way.
Shurm: Make it happen!

All kidding aside, I actually like this hire. We need somebody up above that can see the field better than someone standing on the sideline. He'll have input on where to attack and adjust on game day as well as input all week during the planning process. There were some inevitable problems encountered when Shurmur was calling plays and focusing on the next one for the down and distance. He didn't know that Marecic came off the field injured and Alex Smith replaced him so he called a FB dive to a TE that never takes handoffs. Predictably, we fumbled at the opponent's 2 yard line but Cribbs recovered it. Seriously, if the guy calling plays from the sideline doesn't see or hear McCoy getting laid out by Harrison - don't you want a second opinion from above that can help edit us out of danger? Chilly isn't as bad as everyone makes him out to be because he failed as a Head Coach. Lindy Infante was the best Offensive Coordinator I've ever seen in Cleveland and he failed as a Head Coach.

once again i'm amazed. not at the browns but at the response of this hire.

everybody thinks you can go out and pick whoever you want to come to the browns, that doesn't happen when your a perrenial loser.

we got a guy with alot of nfl coaching experiance and everybody is ready to run him out of town before the official release is even made.

bravo, browns fans.

Hammer,

I agree, but that's where we are at as a fan base unfortunately: beaten down and lashing out at everything.

I like this hire for a number of reasons. First, Childress is better and more experienced than anybody else who was available at the time. Second, Childress will take a lot off Shurmur's plate during the week. Third, another voice in forming a game plan is much needed.

On the other hand, I am with others who would like to see Childress with the play calling duties. In time management/short yardage situations I believe it works better when there's a separation between head coach and play caller. The process is slowed when the same guy has to make the decisions whether to go for it/try to score in a 2min drill and choose the proper plays and personnel. I am hoping Shurmur can improve in this arena in Year 2 because we were abysmal in 2011 and you could argue it cost the Browns at least 3 games.

Well it's what he wants, no?

Anyways I think the comments section on PFT about says it all, Eagles and Viqueens fans sending their condolences en mass. I do wish he was playcalling though, he basically has one playcall that you don't need a 1st round QB for, you just need some lightening fast WR's, his patented screen pass. That's basically what he brings to the table, 30 screen passes per game, McCoy can handle that.

Ooops, Shurmur is still the playcaller. Wtf do we have an OC for then? I guess so the echo chamber gets louder and he can just agree with everything Shurmur says and tell him it's a good idea? Awesome, just what we needed.
