Dawgfan, I've never given up my arguement that the only thing I see wrong with Colt McCoy is a set of handcuffs via no tools to work with. There was no chance at success in last year's environment, which was why the alleged experienced WCO alternative remained winless.
Leading the league in dropped passes compounded the problem. We also heard countless former QBs (Fouts, Gannon), WRs (Tasker) and Coaches (Mora Jr) concluding after a week of film study that McCoy needs some serious help here. The guy that did the game with Fouts when we played SF kept showing a well covered Greg Little while Fouts was complaining that he saw no routes downfield for 3 quarters (prior to the downfield TD pass to Cribbs) = throwing into a crowded phone booth. Throwing into a phone booth = 0 YAC and 100% YUCK. Even worse, a smart kid like McCoy wasn't allowed to audible to a swing pass or wheel route when our WRs clearly weren't coached up for blitz route adjustments. Until we add foot speed - that's the FACE of our passing game giving McCoy far too much credit for all the ugly. When I see tons of passes bouncing off Greg Little's chest - is a Nolan Ryan fastball really the solution?
About the idea of drafting a QB at potential pick of the litter area - think of Donovan McNabb back in 1999
instead of 2012. That's why you do it even though we already had a Ty Detmer first on the depth chart. We just picked the guy that needed more talent to work with than McNabb out of the shoot. As much as I believe in McCoy and want him to do well - I don't know that he'll respond to the challenge like Drew Brees did after being labelled as pond scum for 3 forgettable seasons. BAD TEAMS don't make assessment criteria complete at all. Nobody looks at WHY McCoy went from being everybody's favorite QB here in 2010 with a 7.1 yard per completion to pretending Seneca Wallace is Mr Wonderful while McCoy's yards per complete dropped to 5.8. The WHY is important if the depth of the passign game is being evaluated.
I like RGIII if we don't have to trade away picks. Having said that, he's already drawing the rave reviews while it will be popular among scouts to attack Andrew Luck for the stats of throwing exclusively to 3 TEs most of the year. In the process - that inflates trade value asking price which will exceed way more than swapping #4 for #2. And that's when I start to think Case Keenum or Brandon Weeden falling to our doorstep a little later wouldn't exactly suck. Case Keenum's numbers, career and winning percentages are impressive as Hell. BTW, I don't think McCoy forgot how to win either. I DID witness us beating New Orelans, New England and taking a AFC Championship bound Jets team to OT when his completion got fumbled at the Jets 30 yard line. That was a 3 week first impression I refuse to throw away regardless of how popular it always is in Cleveland to HATE the starting QB. Practice makes perfect.
Changing QBs won't turn the Quincy Morgans of the NFL into Jerry Rice. On the other hand, Jerry Rice has changed the success rates of Steve Young, Steve Bono and I think he was there when Jeff Garcia transitioned from CFL to NFL Pro Bowls (if not - maybe it was TO as a top WR). I think everyone should play chess with only pawns against an opponent with all the attack pieces. Then after you lose, let me know how fair it is to call you stupid or worthless. That's what we're doing to Colt McCoy IMO regardless of what our opportunity is to land a cream of the crop at QB. 2 seperate entities.
