I also like Coples, but he is probably more of a 6-10 slot guy...a bit of a reach at 4. Kalil is a beast, but could you imagine the uproar around here if we "wasted" another pick on the OL? Not like we actually NEED a RT or anything...and he would give us the rotation ability if JT ever had to take a break or got hurt. Same goes for Claiborne...WHAT? Another freakin' CORNERBACK? Guys, keep in mind, this is a PASSING league, so defending the pass should ALSO be a priority. Not a big fan of the Richardson pick. I also think we have Jackson coming back next year. I guess, if put on the spot, I would rank them: Blackmon Kalil Claiborne Coples Richardson But, I would prefer a trade down if it is anyone but Blackmon.

I think without making a move for RGIII, you have to look at the age old "Best Player Available." Of course, there's always the question of need. At this point you just don't know what the Browns are going to do in Free Agency. That said, you'd have to look at Claiborne - He's the next best player with Luck, Griffin, and Kalil off the board. You've got to consider Trent Richardson. If it were me... it's early, but I'm going to turning over the dirt on all of these DE's. And see what I can get out of the pick. I want to put Coples, Upshaw, Branch, Mercilus through their paces, and see if one of them rates out. If it's not too much of a reach to grab one, I do it. I look at Blackmon and Richardson as the best in their draft class, but less than special when it comes to NFL talent overall. And if you're drafting #4, you really want to get someone special. My problem is, I look at this draft as having 4 elite prospects. Then you've got a drop off before you get to Richardson, Blackmon, Riley Rieff, et al. So you're looking a Morris Claiborne. Drafting a CB/S to add to a solid secondary, while you're staring at one of the worst offenses in the NFL and big holes at DE and LB. I'd love for the Browns to improve offensively, but I just don't see a #4 pick out there. If I was forced to pick between the two top offensive players, I'd take Richardson. He's just higher up the food chain than Blackmon. -jj |

I tried to post up alternative QBs that could fall to us after Daniel Synder trades away all his future drafts. I posted up Weeden and Keenum as some potential steals to consider. I've seen us put all our marbles into Courtney Brown at #1 overall in 2000 only to see him frequent IR while Jamir Miller learned a brand new position to replace him with Pro Bowl performances. Unfortunately, he tore an achilles tendon 1 year later. What happened when we put 100% of our marbles into LeCharles Bentley in free agency? His career got parked in Berea. What if Daniel Snyder sees RGIII blow out that same AC Las a couple years ago after giving up his next 5 drafts? We're Cleveland so that kind of thing is very real if we give up all our marbles on 1 guy when we have a ton of marbles to go after tons of needs.

I agree with Jason about Blackmon. He is the best in the class but I don't know if he is special. I don't think he can compare to Green from last year. Claiborne may be the best available but if you think RGIII is that special why wouldn't you move up to get him. You have to consider that two teams needing QB will end up with Flynn and Manning. I could see Snyder and Shanahan going all in on Manning. If you don't think RGIII is that special I would certainly want to take a long hard look at Coples. As far as Richardson, I don't think any RB is worth a #4 pick. |

I'm with you. At #4 if Luck and RG3 are gone, then take either Kalil or Claiborne. No one else is worth a top 4 pick. After them, I would lean towards Richardson over Blackmon. Despite our desperate need for a WR, he is not a true game changers like a Calvin Johnson or A.J. Green to be worth this pick. Richardson at least has the look of someone that could potentially be a durable and elite RB.

In any event, the next QB I'd consider after Luck and Griffin would be Foles. In terms of ranking the college QBs in their ability to fit the ball into tight spaces, I'd place him just behind Luck and the-USC-kid-whose-name-I-will-not-speak-because-he-should-have-declared. I don't think he could step in and start, but he's the type who can develop into a successful starter in a year or two. Regarding the original question, I'd rank Blackmon and Richardson as the next two (Kalil will be gone by #3). |
