7. Cleveland Browns: Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame
The Browns are paying Jake Delhomme $7 million this year, while Mike Holmgren said of Jimmy Clausen, "I wish I liked him more." Based on those two things, it seems unlikely that Cleveland will take Clausen, right?

I don't think so. Browns owner Randy Lerner has deep pockets and has never shied away from spending a lot of money. In an uncapped year, Cleveland can afford to pay both Delhomme and a No. 7 overall rookie quarterback. Plus, Delhomme is nothing more than a one-year rental. Though some of the moves he has made this offseason have been head-scratchers, Holmgren is definitely not an idiot. He has to know that Delhomme is not the long-term (or short-term) solution.

And as far as Holmgren's quote goes, it reeks of "smokescreen" to me. Why would he show his hand like that? If he was lying, he's very cunning. If he wasn't lying, he was very stupid. And I refuse to believe that Holmgren's success in Green Bay and Seattle was an accident.

Clausen has to be the pick. With Delhomme and Seneca Wallace at quarterback, the Browns don't have a franchise quarterback. New regimes mean new quarterbacks, and while Holmgren has never spent an early-round selection on a signal-caller, Clausen is talented enough to be the rare exception.

By the way, some links of note: our exclusive Jimmy Clausen interview and an article called Jimmy Clausen is an Alien Wizard, which discusses why the hatred and bias against Clausen is completely unfounded.

My USA Today Jimmy Clausen article is also out. You can find it in USA Today's NFL Draft magazine, which can be picked up in most bookstores and news stands (there's a picture of Eric Berry on the front cover).

Other 2010 NFL Draft Possibilities:

1. Eric Berry, S - Mike Holmgren loves drafting defensive backs early. If the Seahawks pass on Eric Berry in favor of a left tackle, the Tennessee safety could be the pick here.

2. Dez Bryant, WR - The Browns don't really have a lot of options here. An unlikely but possible one is Dez Bryant - Cleveland really needs an offensive playmaker.

Pick change; previously Eric Berry, S

38. Cleveland Browns: Jerry Hughes, DE/OLB, TCU
The Browns just traded for Chris Gocong, but according to Terry Pluto of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Cleveland sees Gocong as more of an inside linebacker. If so, then rush linebacker is still a major need in the wake of the Kamerion Wimbley trade.

71. Cleveland Browns: Chad Jones, S, LSU
If the Browns don't draft Eric Berry in the first round, they'll be searching for safety help with one of their four picks in Rounds 2-3.

Pick change; previously Jarett Brown, QB

85. Cleveland Browns: Perrish Cox, CB/KR, Oklahoma State
The Browns traded for Sheldon Brown, but they still need depth at corner. Plus, Brown is 31 and won't last forever.

92. Cleveland Browns: Taylor Price, WR, Ohio
Cleveland needs offensive playmakers. Brady Quinn struggled last year with his deep accuracy, but it's hard to put all of the blame on him because his top targets were Evan Moore, Mohamed Massaquoi and Mike Furrey.

Pick change; previously Jamar Chaney, ILB

134. Cleveland Browns: Sam Young, OT, Notre Dame
The Browns signed Tony Pashos, but he's hardly a long-term solution at right tackle. I don't even think he's the short-term answer.

146. Cleveland Browns: Riley Cooper, WR, Florida
The Chiefs and Browns apparently think that owning a billion fifth-round picks is the key to NFL domination. At any rate, more than one wideout is needed to optimize Cleveland's pedestrian offense.

Pick change; previously Jordan Shipley, WR

160. Cleveland Browns: Jeff Byers, C/G, USC
The Browns lost both Hank Fraley and Rex Hadnot this offseason, so offensive line depth must be replenished.

This is the worst mock I've seen this year. Clausen is basically the only pick at #7 i would be shocked by.

Berry or trade down and I'm sticking with it and if I have proved nothing else I'm usually wrong so we probably will do something else, lol.

It's a get everything you ever dreamed of mock -- QB, WRs, safety, corner, linebacker (all good ones). This seems almost too good to be true. But it would be our best scenario by miles. We'd be contenders.

Riley Cooper won some fans at his pro day. Mayock said, "He just catches the ball. He's going to catch a lot of passes at the next level."

BTW, John Taylor (Scout) says there's too much murmuring about the Browns and Clausen to discount it, especially if Berry is gone. Odrick and Thomas are possibilities, he confirmed, and chided Grossi for beating him on Odrick.

It's those four guys.

more importantly, we were slammed twice in the first two picks of the second round.

Hopefully our changes are an improvement:

  1. St. Louis Rams: Arrelious Benn, WR, Illinois
Rams general manager Billy Devaney recently spoke about the need to add more playmakers to the team: "We need playmakers. That's what we have to get on our team right now, that's what we have to get - guys that can score touchdowns from way out, guys that can sack the quarterback, make a difference, impact a game."

Arrelious Benn can definitely help St. Louis score more touchdowns - at least theoretically. Benn is an incredible physical specimen, but I call him "Braylon Edwards 2.0" because he drops a lot of easy passes. Still, he's worth taking at No. 33.

Pick change; previously Everson Griffen, DE
  2. Detroit Lions: Devin McCourty, CB, Rutgers
Even after trading for Chris Houston, the Lions really need to find help for a secondary that couldn't even contain Brady Quinn. Detroit played musical chairs with its cornerbacks last year, but nothing worked.

Detroit's coaching staff had a good look at Devin McCourty when coaching him at the Senior Bowl, so they're very familiar with him. He would be a great fit for the Lions.

Wow... what a mess. I think my biggest problem with this is, that with the exception of Hughes providing a little speed off the defensive edge, the 2010 Browns would be no better on April 25th than they are on April 21st.

Oh, and now you have a quarterback controversy. Cox, Price, Cooper are 2-3 year projects. Young is probably a career backup. And, Chad Jones is all upside, no resume.

If Heckertt and Holmgren want to get Eric Mangini run out of town on a rail, this would be the way to do it. And maybe that's the plan.

A team's going to get a discount on Cox because of his character issues, but I doubt it'll be the Browns.

Gonna have to agree, I'm thinking there will be a lot of trades. Clausen will not be picked, H3 will want players that can contribute immediately, and Holmgren sees more value in developing a QB from round 3 and 5, taking a non-QB starter in round 1 and 2, possibly picking up an extra 2nd round through trading their excess picks.

When I read that I had to go vomit and come back. Chad Jones a SS to play along side Elam a SS. What a pair that would be. Two Project receivers and a guy that got beat more then a red headed step child for a tackle. You know my feelings on Clausen....................ugh

You have one decent pick in Hughes and a bunch of backups or projects................man is he in left field.
