Giants, Jets brace for Super Bowl vote

Posted by Mike Florio on May 22, 2010 10:12 AM ET
On Tuesday, owners will choose the location of Super Bowl XLVIII. The finalists are Tampa Bay, South Florida, and New York/New Jersey.

Conventional wisdom is that the NFL will embrace the incredibly unconventional, picking the new Meadowlands Stadium. Which doesn't have a roof.

Still, as Bob Glauber of Newsday explains it in a mobile article that can be read without a susbscription to the website, one of the concerned parties is taking nothing for granted.

"I've counted these votes before, and believe me, it doesn't always come out the way you expect, or the way owners will tell you they're voting,'' Giants co-owner John Mara said. "My father used to count the votes, too, and it was the same thing. Trust me, I'm not taking anything for granted.''

But things are looking good. Influential Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who could be angling for a future open-air Super Bowl of his own, is on the bandwagon. "I'm a big supporter of having the Super Bowl in New York,'' Kraft said. "It doesn't matter what the weather is. It's a great place. It's a great boost for the city. It's a reward to the people and fans in New York.''

As a result, Jets owner Woody Johnson, who has caught a raging case of bravado from coach Rex Ryan, was less cautious than his Giants counterpart.

"We think we've got a good shot,'' Johnson said. "We've got a great stadium, we've got the greatest city in the world, and we've got a great plan. We think we can get this thing done.''

On Thursday, we'll find out whether the Giants and the Jets will be able to mimic Ryan in a different way -- by giving the finger both to Miami and to Tampa

I would LOVE for a Super Bowl that was in some intense weather, possibly winter weather. Its just so boring those games are performed in pristine weather. Was it the Panthers/Patriots bowl that was the last one that had weather influence the game? Memory serves me correctly (and it's pretty shaky so please correct me if I'm wrong...) that was the last bowl game that had any kind of intense weather.

Fans already looking to next year and I don't blame them.
I think we will have things to be excited about that we lacked last year and we have some real facepalm moments just like last year.
It's going to be tough.

Please let it be The Meadowlands. Harsh weather and pro football go together like peanutbutter and bread. Enough of these dome/warm weather superbowls!

@Enigmatic--I believe the Colts-Bears was the last game played in what would be called adverse conditions.

As to playing the game in a cold-weather site, I have mixed feelings about it. Sure, I like football played in cold weather as much as the next guy, but I don't want to see the Super Bowl played in slop--there's a reason why as soon as they started playing them, the organizers put the game in southern cities. It's not so much about putting the game in a warm place as it is about letting the game be played on what is essentially a blank canvas--neither team has a particular advantage playing in 65 degree weather, and there's no reason for any team to change its gameplan.

Plus, the Super Bowl has two main audiences--the big-money ticket buyers who want to watch in comfort and the people watching at home. And even the die-hardest of die-hard fans would be hard pressed to argue that they'd like to see a game played in Cleveland-Buffalo conditions decide the championship.

And no, this doesn't mean that Cleveland has a chance to get the Super Bowl. And no, it doesn't have anything to do with the NFL dissing the city. It has to do with abysmal weather, too few hotel rooms, and nothing to do in the city during the runup to the game.

I'd rather have a Buffalo-Cleveland weather superbowl than another Pittsburgh-Seattle shitty ass refereeing game again.
I know people are paying $1500 a cheap seat to go to the bowl, and THOSE kinds of people would rather have a warm weather superbowl. Screw them.
Let's go back to the good old days.
Let's play the superbowl in a conference champion's stadium (best record for the season, coin toss if tied).
If it goes to a dome, it's in a dome. If it's a frozen tundra, break out the thermal undies boys!

I went to a late December Jets/Pats game at the Meadowlands as a kid. I froze my fucking ass off and they ran out of hot chocolate by halftime.

I think it would be badass to have a game in some cold weather conditions. Fuck the "blank canvass" shit. I mean, adverse weather determines who gets to the game every year, let it be played in some weird weather.

And if it's a superbowl matchup like this year, (colts/saints) then both teams are at an equal disadvantage.

It's a good changeup.

The die hard fans won't mind the cold.. there are enough people that love going to the NY area and enough hard core football fans.. NY will be very good.. I hope it's not BAD weather..but a weather game nontheless. 28-35 degrees and flurries.. something like that.. I don't want 10 below.. and I don't want 6' of snow.. those would kind of buzzkill the game a "little" bit..

I stated my case in the chat about this. It should be played outdoors, and in cold weather if need be. All NFL cities should get a shot of hosting one. And they shouldn't be making an exception just for NY, ugh.
