So the Dodgers are ten games out of first place and losing by four runs in the eighth inning in San Diego. Time for a feel-good story-- to pinch-hit, he sends out John Lindsey, who is 33 years old and has spent 15 years in the minors. It's going to be his major league debut. Who cares if he strikes out? It's cool just to see a lifer finally get his "Moonlight" Graham moment. When he's finally up, the Padres make a pitching change and bring in a right-hander. Lindsey bats right. But obviously Torre wouldn't be a big enough tool to pull the guy, right? Wrong. In comes the right-hander, out comes John Lindsey and in comes Andre Ethier who, batting from the left side, promptly grounds into an inning-ending double play. I tried to find that clip from "Homer at the Bat" where Mr. Burns explains to Daryl Strawberry that it's just playing the statistics to take him out and replace him with Homer, but alas, I could not. Suffice it to say that even though I've always liked him, for tonight anyway Torre can, indeed, suck it. Dennis |

This is the shittiest thing I've read today. I can't believe what a tool Joe Torre is for doing this to the poor guy. Zero chance to win the game, zero chance to make the playoffs, and you ruin a guys life long dream he's worked 15 years to achieve? Fucking douchebag extraordinair |

Here's the video, which is pretty sad to watch: In happier news, he finally got an at-bat yesterday, pinch-hitting and flying out in Houston. Here's the best part of the story (I'll admit it made me get a bit choked up): >>"I got a little antsy on deck," said a joyous Lindsey, who is expected to be in the starting lineup on Saturday against Astros left-hander Wandy Rodriguez. "But I tried to take deep breaths and keep my heart rate down. But when I got in the batter's box, it was just like normal. This is what you do." Lindsey had family from Mississippi attend the game, including his 3-year-old son. Lindsey left 13 tickets for relatives and friends. "It's an awesome feeling," Lindsey said. "My little boy getting to see his dad out there." << Dennis |
