AAHHH Dare to dream. It's finally time to make those bold predictions for our Browns this season. Back them up with logic or just get crazy with it. It's all in good fun.

I'm going for a 10-6 wild card season. All games are at 1pm and we don't go to the west coast so there will be a routine there. We will split with Cincy and Spitssburgh but sweep Ratbirds. And that 4 week plunge with Saints, bye, Pats and Jets---we go 2-1(those last 2 are at home). The final Sunday night game will be Browns over stools for the final wild card spot. And the fans will be for this team ALL YEAR. No soap operas, no controversies just good football. Yeah I'm a fan.

As far as the rest of the NFL---going with the Colts and Packers for the Super Bowl. If I were truly bold the Browns would be there but baby steps for me. I'm willing to wait a year or so for the big one.

The 2 busts will be the Jets and Vikings. And my bold prediction is once the Vikings are out of the race Favre will have one excellent game and then mysteriously sustain an injury and sit down. Bye Brett

So there it is. Looking forward to the Board and you calm cool collected members all season. Game on

Throughout the preseason, I have been preaching patience. I've focused on the merits of taking the preseason for what it is...glorified practice sessions.

I've emphasized waiting for the real deal: Sept. 12.

Here we go Brownies, here we go: WOOF WOOF!!!!!

Now we get to see the reality. Now we get to see what our team really has.

Rogers is back in practice. We have waves of linebackers ready to pummel the opponent. McDonald is gone, and Hillis is ready to handle the load as our durable, 20-plus carries a game running back. Jake is ready to shut up the kiddies at KNR.

Just a few more days to wait. And to top that off, we could still pick up some players who will bolster the roster.

We have a better Browns team than this time last year. There is no doubt about that. As far has how that converts to wins and losses, we are about to find out.

And that, my fellow Browns fans, has been well worth the agonizing 6-week wait.

The time has come. Enjoy.

With the addition of Houshmadilla, the Ravens will try to trade Mark Clayton and cut him if they can't. I think it's a little strange, given that the Ravens will be fielding a trio of possession receivers over 30, but whatever.

Clayton just turned 28, and while hasn't been a star, he does have over 3,000 yards in five seasons and has often looked on the cusp. He'd bring a nice infusion of speed, something we lack.

He'll come cheap either way, trade or cut, and he'd be a very solid and logical pickup. He's young, he's fast, and he's shown he can play.

With yesterday's announcements of cuts by NFL teams to get down to the 53 man roster limit there were some suprises by the Browns which leads to more specualation of what is to come.

With only 3 CB's currently on the roster and 12 LB's and few quality back-ups on the OL the Browns will be scanning the waiver wire to look for quality replacements. Which LB's will be cut? Do the Browns cut Bowens to bring in a quality veteran CB like Dre' Bly? LB Alex Hall just got cut by the Giants, do you favor resigning him over one of the current LB's on the roster? What about C Justin Hartwig from the Steelers? Could he be signed on the cheap to be a back-up C/G? Do the Browns sign a veteran WR who still has skills but just got cut lick Michael Clayton? Do the Browns add a vet RB like JJ Arrington or Ladell Betts?

Decisions, decisions, what will it be?

They advertise it for $319 but when I talked to the representative on the phone and told her I couldn't afford the price she said they have been having trouble selling Sunday Ticket this year and offered it to me for $199. Not bad at all and a lot cheaper than going to the local Browns Bar every Sunday.

If you are on the fence thinking about it maybe you should give them a call...

Baltimore Ravens -

Ed Reed will miss at least the first 6 weeks of the season after being placed on the PUP list (Awww) which means he will be unavailable for a week 3 showdown with our Cleveland Browns in Baltimore.

The starting CB's in their beat-up secondary will be Fabian Washington and Chris Carr with newly acquired Josh Wilson (former starting CB for Seattle for 5th rd draft choice) covering the slot/nickel. All 3 will be UFA's at the end of the year so more changes coming for the Ravens secondary.

Still some speculation Willis McGahee might be traded.

The Ravens site claim they "Control" the division, we'll see...

Pittsburgh Steelers -

QB Ben Rothlisberger got his suspension reduced from 6 games to 4 (Suprise, suprise) and will be back just in time to have two weeks to prepare (1st week back is a bye) for the Cleveland Browns to come to Heinze Field.

In other QB news, with the recent knee injury suffered by Leftwich there is speculation old Charlie Batch may be the starter for the 1st four games with designed "packages" for back-up Dennis Dixon.

Former starting Center Justin Hartwig may be looking for work soon after getting thoroughly outplayed in pre-season and losing his starting job to by U of Florida rookie Markice Pouncey who was originally drafted to play Guard. Makes me wonder how good Pouncey's identical twin and current Gators starting Guard will be next year when he is available in the draft...

Cinncinnati Bengals -

Former Buckeye and NY Jets Kicker Mike Nugent, by all indications, has wrapped up the starting kicker position in pre-season.

After recently terminating the contract of off season FA signee WR Antonio Bryant and speculation that former Cincy WR TJ Houshmandzedeh will be released soon by Seattle, outspoken Bengal WR Chad Ocho Cinco has already started lobbying for him to join the team. Cincy has already wasted nearly $18 million trying to find his replacement by signing Laveranues Coles last year and Antonio Bryant this year.

We will see first hand how the Bengals are this year as they come to CBS for a week 4 match-up in Cleveland.

Feel free to add any rumors, speculation or fact concerning the AFC North here.

Here's what I think the Browns can accomplish in 2010:

On offense, I think they can become a team with everything but the explosive passing offense possessed by every serious contender in today's NFL.

They can forge together a Top Five line that isn't very old if Thomas-Steinback-Mack-Lauvao-Pashos works out as well as I think it can.

They can have a set of young backs that becomes the envy of the league in Hardesty, Harrison, and Hillis, plus FB Vickers.

They can develop some pass-catching talent from among youngsters Moore, Robiskie, and Massoquoi. If two of the three are a big part of the long-term future, that's great.

The next steps will be to find another passcatching weapon, almost certainly a very fast one, and hopefully find our version of Manning, Rodgers, Brees, Brady, Roethliberger, etc. The QB who can run a high-powered passing offense for the next decade.

On defense, I think we can have everything but a dynamic edge guys OCs have to gameplan for. I think we have a lot of really good young talent on that side of the ball in Rubin, Gocong, Jackson, Roth, Haden, Wright, Ward, and maybe Benard.

We'll need to get faster and more athletic on the edges, at OLB and DE.

Overall, I think the Browns can come out of 2010 looking like a team that's only maybe four starters from serious and sustained contention. Delhomme could well start again in 2011, but you want the long-term guy on the roster, learning for a year.

Maybe Veikune can go back to being a 4-3 DE and Gilbert can be a 3-4 DE at 6'5" and 285... and all will be right with the world. Straight-up trade?

From Peyton Manning to Jake Delhomme, ESPN's John Clayton ranks the NFL's starting QBs - ESPN

THE ELITE

1. Peyton Manning, Indianapolis Colts
Analysis: At 34, Manning doesn't show any signs of slowing. He sets the agenda for modern NFL quarterbacks with the no-huddle and three-receiver offenses and generates 12-win seasons as easily as he completes passes. Under Manning, the Colts have won 12 or more games for seven consecutive seasons.
Arrow is pointing: Up
2. Tom Brady, New England Patriots
Analysis: I resisted the urge to put Drew Brees ahead of him, but Brady, with three Super Bowl rings, is still the master. The knee injury slowed him a little in 2009 (4,398 yards, 28 TD passes), but I expect his numbers to be much better this season.
Arrow is pointing: Flat
3. Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints
Analysis: The combination of Brees and Sean Payton is scary. Brees is a master at finding the open receiver, and Payton is one of the best playcallers in the business.
Arrow is pointing: Up
4. Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers
Analysis: With two Super Bowl rings, Roethlisberger ranks with the elite of the elite quarterbacks in the league. His suspension is a wakeup call, but as a quarterback, he's almost impossible to stop when he rolls out of the pocket and when the game is on the line in the fourth quarter.
Arrow is pointing: Flat
5. Brett Favre, Minnesota Vikings
Analysis: It's amazing to think Favre had his best season at age 40. Even though he says this is his final year, Favre loves the game and can still play it at a high level.
Arrow is pointing: Slightly down
6. Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers
Analysis: This could be the season Rodgers passes Favre as the best quarterback in the NFC North. His arm is strong and he finally learned how to win games in the fourth quarter. Rodgers has had a scintillating preseason. (By the way, NFC North blogger Kevin Seifert and ESPN national columnist Gene Wojciechowski debate the merits of Rodgers and Favre here.)
Arrow is pointing: Up
7. Philip Rivers, San Diego Chargers
Analysis: He's the biggest reason the Chargers stay ahead of the other AFC West teams. A great leader, Rivers is fearless throwing to tight end Antonio Gates and other pass-catchers even when they appear to be covered.
Arrow is pointing: Up
8. Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys
Analysis: Now that Romo has won a playoff game, watch out. The only thing that could prevent him and the Cowboys from playing host to a Super Bowl an aging offensive line faltering.
Arrow is pointing: Up
9. Donovan McNabb, Washington Redskins
Analysis: Mike Shanahan offers McNabb play-action options he didn't have with the Eagles' pass-heavy offense. With McNabb at the helm, the Redskins could be one of the surprise teams in the NFC.
Arrow is pointing: Spinning as he adjusts to a new offense
10. Carson Palmer, Cincinnati Bengals
Analysis: The additions of Terrell Owens, Jermaine Gresham and Jordan Shipley could allow Palmer to relive his 4,000-yard days. Marvin Lewis prefers running the ball, but Palmer would love for the Bengals' offense to open up.
Arrow is pointing: Up
11. Eli Manning, New York Giants
Analysis: Despite recording his first 4,000-yard passing season in 2009 and already owning a Super Bowl ring, Manning doesn't get the respect he is due. He lacks the fiery leadership of his brother, but he continues to improve each season.
Arrow is pointing: Flat
12. Joe Flacco, Baltimore Ravens
Analysis: With the Ravens' problems in their secondary, Flacco may be asked to throw more, which is fine by him. Anquan Boldin will help him working from the slot and Donte' Stallworth could help to stretch the field on occasion when he returns from injury.
Arrow is pointing: Up
13. Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons
Analysis: Like Flacco, Ryan should have a breakthrough season. Most top quarterbacks come into their own in their third season, and Ryan has studied every top quarterback trying to improve his game.
Arrow is pointing: Up
14. Matt Schaub, Houston Texans
Analysis: Schaub finally moved into the elite group by staying healthy and throwing for a league-high 4,770 yards in 2009. (By the way, that was 270 yards more than Peyton Manning had last season.) The next step for Schaub and the Texans? Win in the AFC South and make the playoffs for the first time.
CHAD PENNINGTON DIVISION

15. Jay Cutler, Chicago Bears
Analysis: Cutler was an elite quarterback in 2008 when he played for the Broncos, but 26 interceptions for Chicago in 2009 moved him out of my top group. With Mike Martz calling the plays, Cutler should regain his 4,000-yard form and re-emerge as the elite quarterback the Bears thought they acquired in a trade with Denver.
Chance of being elite: 95 percent
16. Kyle Orton, Denver Broncos
Analysis: There is a huge drop-off after Cutler, but Orton is finally getting his due. Despite using a first-round choice on Tim Tebow, Denver realized Orton's importance by giving him a one-year contract extension last month. People seem to forget Orton threw for 3,802 yards last season.
Chance of being elite: 10 percent
17. Matt Hasselbeck, Seattle Seahawks
Analysis:A three-time Pro Bowl selection, Hasselbeck lost his elite status because of two seasons getting rocked behind bad offensive lines. Hasselbeck is the one hope Pete Carroll has for challenging for the NFC West title.
Chance of being elite: 25 percent
18. Vince Young, Tennessee Titans
Analysis: He's a 66 percent winner as a starter even though he struggles to complete 60 percent of his passes. Young isn't a great thrower, but he finds ways to win.
Chance of being elite: 10 percent
19. Jason Campbell, Oakland Raiders
Analysis: In Washington, Campbell was the handpicked franchise quarterback of Joe Gibbs, but he was always outperformed by Eli Manning, Tony Romo and Donovan McNabb in the NFC East. His fresh start in Oakland has allowed him to grow as a leader of a younger group of offensive players. He also gives the Raiders a quarterback who can complete better than 60 percent of his passes.
Chance of being elite: 10 percent
20. David Garrard, Jacksonville Jaguars
Analysis: This might be his final season as the Jags' starter, but don't underestimate him. He is a good leader and still has the ability to complete 60 percent of his passes.
Chance of being elite: 5 percent
21. Alex Smith, San Francisco 49ers
Analysis: It's hard to believe this is Smith's sixth season. The pressure is on him to get the 49ers to the playoffs. He has not lived up to his No. 1 billing in the draft, obviously, but the surrounding cast is good enough to make a playoff run. One of the faults I noticed when I saw him in the preseason is that he doesn't always hit receivers in stride.
Chance of being elite: 0 percent
22. Matt Cassel, Kansas City Chiefs
Analysis: Cassel showed in New England that he can be a playoff-caliber quarterback if he's surrounded with pass-catchers with yards-after-the-catch ability. He lacks the downfield arm to stretch a defense, but if the Chiefs get him more playmakers, Cassel could thrive.
Chance of being elite: 0 percent

HIT-OR-MISS DIVISION

23. Mark Sanchez, New York Jets
Analysis: The additions of Braylon Edwards and Santonio Holmes at wide receiver and LaDainian Tomlinson catching passes out of the backfield should allow Sanchez to be a 60 percent thrower. Another ally will be the motion packages offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer can install now that Sanchez has a year of experience in the offense.
Chance of being elite: 50 percent
24. Kevin Kolb, Philadelphia Eagles
Analysis: Kolb is the perfect quarterback for Andy Reid's West Coast offense, which is why the Eagles traded Donovan McNabb to the Redskins. Kolb is a rhythm passer out of three- and five-step drops, and he should have a big statistical year.
Chance of being elite: 50 percent
25. Chad Henne, Miami Dolphins
Analysis: Henne has a strong arm and a flair for fourth-quarter comebacks, giving him a chance to be a top-level quarterback. It did seem as though defenses figured him out in the second half of the season, but Henne is smart enough to adjust. Plus, he now has Brandon Marshall as his main target.
Chance of being elite: 45 percent
26. Byron Leftwich, Pittsburgh Steelers
Analysis: Leftwich lacks mobility and tends to stay in the pocket too long, but his strong arm and good leadership could bail out the Steelers filling in for Roethlisberger in September. If Leftwich can't generate a 2-2 start, though, he might fall into a permanent backup role. Leftwich should withstand a challenge from Dennis Dixon, who flubbed his chance to claim the job with a poor preseason performance against Denver.
Chance of being elite: 0 percent
27. Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions
Analysis: Stafford survived a painful rookie season in which he was pounded by defenses (24 sacks, 20 interceptions), but he showed flashes of greatness. Tight end Tony Scheffler and wide receiver Nate Burleson will pull coverage away from go-to receiver Calvin Johnson and give the Lions' offense -- and Stafford -- a chance.
Chance of being elite: 55 percent
28. Matt Leinart/Derek Anderson, Arizona Cardinals
Analysis: For Anderson, this is a chance to rebuild his career after tough seasons in Cleveland in 2008 and 2009. He's not very accurate, never completing more than 60 percent of his passes in a season in the NFL. For Leinart, this is the end of the line as a Cardinal after this season if he doesn't regain a starting job he had no business losing.
Chances of being elite: 0 percent
29. Josh Freeman, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Analysis: Freeman is a big, athletic quarterback who is being paired with a promising, young receiving corps. The small fracture on the tip of his right thumb is a slight setback, but Freeman is the perfect quarterback for the Bucs to build around.
Chance of being elite: 35 percent
30. Sam Bradford, St. Louis Rams
Analysis: What amazes Rams management about Bradford is his accuracy and how calm he seems in the pocket. Unfortunately, his rookie season will be tough because St. Louis lacks big-play receivers and the offensive line is struggling.
Chance of being elite: 85 percent
31. Trent Edwards, Buffalo Bills
Analysis: Call it deja Bills. When Edwards entered the league in 2007, the Bills were a bottled-up offense desperately looking for receivers who could pull coverage away from Lee Evans. Edwards' lone target remains Evans, but the offensive line is now much worse.
Chance of being elite: 0 percent
32. Matt Moore, Carolina Panthers
Analysis: He has a 6-2 record as starter, but a slow start could speed the Jimmy Clausen era in Carolina.
Chance of being elite: 5 percent
33. Jake Delhomme, Cleveland Browns
Analysis: Interceptions in the playoff loss to Arizona in 2008 led to a downward spiral for a quarterback who won a lot of games for John Fox and the Panthers. At 35, Delhomme has no chance of being a starter anywhere else if he doesn't cut it in Cleveland.
Chance of being elite: 0 percent

The Browns had been expecting a one-game suspension, but the NFL apparently concluded that it was an honest mistake. Rodgers may still miss several games at the beginning of the season while recovering from a broken leg. Ahtyba Rubin has emerged as the Browns' starting nose tackle.
Good news! I sure hope he is healthy (and skipping training camp) or close to. I'd love to see him at DE this season and add to our need/depth at D-Line. I wonder if R. Smith escapes too?

Hi all, sorry for my extended absence and missing the whole Quinn to Denver issue. I've been a little busy with a huge promotion at work that equalled a little more pay, a lot more responsibility, and a whole lot of hours. I am 24/7 now and went for a stretch in June/July where I worked at least eight hours every day for two months, including Satrudays and Sundays. Hopefully the winter will bring a little peace and quiet.

My fiancee (the Browns fan who got me involved with this board for those of you who don't know the history) also had a rejection episode with her transplanted kidney. She is on Dialysis at the moment, on the waiting list for a second transplant. Her health is as well as can be expected in the situation, and we are moving forward with hope and a positive attitude.

Regarding Quinn, I haven't been able to follow the situation much. My quick thoughts on the matter are that Quinn has some serious potential, and that McDaniels (while he may be a power hungry little napoleonic slut) was an excellent QB coach. Together it may be a very good combination, we will have to see what develops. I will concede in advance that it does not look good up til now though.

I do have a serious lack of faith in Tebow. I think we have an athletic QB that will probably struggle with a passing game in the Pro arena and eventually fail. Regarding Hillis to you, you got one of the hardest running bastards I have ever seen in my life. I have been a fan of Peyton's work ethic and runnign ability for some time, and hope he does well for you guys, I think he will be an excellent short yardage/receiving threat for years to come.

Hope that catches you all up with my situation and football related thoughts somewhat, if a mod wants to move this to the community area for non football related posts that is fine. Hope to catch up with all of you in chat sometime soon, and if anyone has any insight or thought on the Broncos or a general breakdown of the Browns off season for me, I would love to hear it.

P.S. My Fiancees daughter is still playing with the Ravens Marching band. I am still NOT a Ravens fan. ;)

I figure we're going to need one of these for the season.

I will be adding my contributions to it regularly, as I'm sure Alo will (hopefully), as well.

I'm going to start with my slide show I just made this morning on The Bleacher Report. I know it's just a random site with articles that mean nothing, but I like to put it into a format that looks neat, and see what others have to say.

10 College Football Names You May Not Know, But Should | Bleacher Report

Marquis Maze
Aaron Murray
Warren Norman
Martez Wilson

Those are just 4 of the 10 names on there.

Let's keep this thread for posting any collegiate players throughout the season. It doesn't matter if he plays for Barking Hard University, or Florida, if you think they are interesting, post it.

Haden will be the 3rd CB, and probably starter by mid-year
Ward is the starting FS
Hardesty is in the rotation at RB
McCoy was never intended to even play this year, so no disappointment there
Lauvao looks to be starting at RG
Asante will make the squad a backup and ST player
Mitchell just may make the team
Geathers is probably the long shot of the group.

NICE!!!

The purpose of this thread is not any personal desire to bury McCoy.

and this is from a dubious source ....Bruce Drennen, on whatever he calls his late night show on Fox Sports Ohio......

Anyhow, Drennen (and yahoo sports?) have speculated that McCoy may not make the final roster. Drennens main lucid pont - Holmgren's statement that he likes to draft a QB every year. Drennen also pointed to a Canton Repository article. Browns' McCoy is in a fight for QB job - Canton, OH - CantonRep.com

Some think Ratcliff/McCoy is a toss up.

I am betting against this, because Holmgren up front talked about taking a couple years to get McCoy ready, and also he spent a 3rd round pick on McCoy.

McCoy has been underwhelming, but he has had the 3rd string line and 3rd string backs.

What say you?

James Harrison says Kyle Orton "got what he had coming" Posted by Mike Florio on August 30, 2010 1:04 PM ET
When a bank robber gets away with the money, the last thing he should do is call the bank the next day, identify himself, and say, "You're damn right I took the money."

A similar concept applies when a football player apparently gets away with a fairly blatant case of unnecessary roughness.

After recovering a fumble, which eventually was ruled not a fumble, in Sunday night's game between the Steelers and the Broncos, linebacker James Harrison encountered Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton. Orton, not cognizant of the line between bravery and lunacy, tried to tackle Harrison. So Harrison unloaded on Orton. Hard.

"He was running his mouth and getting in the way of the train," Harrison said after the game, per Mike Klis of the Denver Post. "And the train wasn't coming off the track."

If Harrison had said nothing more, we think he'd be fine. It was a rough play, but no one told Orton to get in the way of the train. But then Harrison added a sentence or two that creates the impression that he was trying to injure Orton.

"He was popping off down there the first time they were about to score," Harrison said. "So you run your mouth, expect to get something. Everything's between the lines, so he got what he had coming."

Even though Orton wasn't throwing the ball or otherwise within the protections that apply to quarterbacks, the rules prevent specific instances of unnecessary roughness. Despite the fact that no flag was thrown, Harrison's word could be enough to trigger a letter from the league office informing him that he's getting what he has coming, as in money coming out of his check.

Guys like this are why Steroids get a bad rap.

That said, I don't think he should be fined for running his mouth, that's a Stooltown thing anyways, but he should be fined for leading with his helmet attempting to throw a helmet to helmet hit on Orton. Though that too is a Stooltown Tradition, Goodell needs to grow a pair.

After Jake Delhomme was able to move the Cleveland Browns offense up and down the field with ease, Detroit rookie Ndamukong Suh showed frustration and very dirty play with a violent facemask penalty against the veteran quarterback.
On a third down play in Saturday’s preseason game, Suh caught Delhomme from behind by the facemask and pulled him to the ground as Delhomme was flushed from the pocket. After the rookie pulled Delhomme down by the facemask, he grabbed Delhomme’s head with his other hand and twisted as he tossed him backwards.

Facemask penalties happen at every level of football, but as an NFL player, Suh should know better and display more control. Suh’s actions showed blatant intent to injure Delhomme and should have resulted in a more serious penalty, possibly an ejection from the game.
Not only was the penalty cheap, but it was worthy of retaliation. Suh is lucky that Cleveland’s offensive line did not come to Delhomme’s aid like New Orleans Saints lineman Kyle Turley did for Aaron Brooks in the infamous helmet toss incident against the Jets.
The penalty was the second facemask penalty called on Suh in Saturday’s game and Suh’s dirty play should be looked at by the NFL.
NFL football is a violent, injury-prone game and the NFL does everything it can to make the game as safe as possible. There is no room for this type of play in the NFL and Roger Goodell should take a closer look at Suh’s play and impose a fine and/or suspension

I hate to seem all whiney and stuff about football players being "too rough", but this was a little more than that...
Receiver Antonio Bryant has suddenly arrived on the free-agent market with a thud loud enough to get the attention of plenty of teams that need players to catch passes.

As we understand it, Bryant's plan is to get his bum knee to 100 percent, and then to pick his next team.

If/when that happens, plenty of teams should be interested, depending on his asking price. In 2008, Bryant caught 83 passes for 1,248 yards and seven touchdowns under the tutelage of Jon Gruden.

This could make Bryant attractive to Browns president Mike Holmgren, whom some believe is eyeballing Gruden as a possible replacement for Eric Mangini in 2011. Other teams that arguably need a high-end wideout include the Titans, Broncos, Chiefs, Raiders, Chargers, Redskins, Bears, Vikings, Bucs, Cardinals, and Rams. Given that the Seahawks are (were) interested in Vincent Jackson, they also could be interested in Bryant.

If Bryant can't get himself to 100 percent before the regular-season starts, don't be surprised if he files an injury grievance against the Bengals. Even if Bryant was injured when he signed with the team (apparently, the same doctors who recommended Daunte Culpepper over Drew Brees to the Dolphins in 2006 now work for the Bengals), a player cannot be cut without compensation if he is injured. And so an arbitration proceeding could be held to determine the amount of money that the Bengals owe Bryant, based on the number of weeks that pass until he can pass a physical with a new team.

The Bengals likely would claim that they cut Bryant now in the hopes of giving him a chance to land with a new team. And that's probably true -- especially since they'll avoid any further financial liability to Bryant if he signs elsewhere before the start of the regular season.

OK, fellow Browns fans. The time is drawing near.

Sept. 12.

After the Saturday matinee at Detroit, I'm going to break my own rules and form an opinion about the team. In particular, the defense.

As the offense has done though out the preseason I believe the defense is following the same game plan...

Don't show anybody anything.

I look at the personel and I see an influx of talent. I see a group of players that has a lot of talent...OK, not necessarily Pro Bowl talent...that right now has a lot of growing to do, a lot of jelling to get done.

I see the return of Blanton Collier's Rubber Band defense...

Bend, but don't break.

I believe this defense will be a lot more aggressive than those teams of yore. Right now, those blitz schemes are smoke screens. I mean, where is Roth. Where are the rest of these linebackers?

They are hiding. Waiting for Sept.12.

Truely, we are not going to be the fastest defensive unit in the NFL. I can agree with that. But we are still more athletic, more skilled than last year's defensive squad. It rminds me a lot about the Jim Huston, Walter Johnson units.

Bend, but don't break.

That's more or less what we saw in the first half. I can see this team giving up yardage, but holding teams to field goals. Maybe give up a first-half touchdown, but putting down the clamps after that. Giving the newly-revamped offense a chance to go to work. I believe this defense will feet the job done when the crap starts hitting the fan downing Tampa.

Two more weeks. We'll see.

While other sports stories have been dominating the airwaves throughout the offseason - our favorite team was looking at the ingredients we want a GREAT report card from for the 2010 season. Let's take an upclose at what we have blended with some newbies to see what's possible. Warning folks, I always add wishful thinking to my predictions and evaluations so you may have to buffer some of the brokeback heebeegeebees. I'll start with our best players while asking readers not to worry about the chronological order as much after #1 and #2:

1) Joe Thomas - he's had an A on every report card to date playing blindside bodyguard for what ended up looking like some blind QBs. Actually 2007, his efforts led to some temporary successes in the passing game before NFL scouting reports and film replicated on the easiest ways to stop DA. He's elite at a VERY important position.

2) Josh Cribbs - considered by people everywhere as the best return man in today's game. Some people that really dig STs enough to research them have praised cribbs for beign one of the best punt/coverage coverage guys in the league as well. In 2009, we found more ways to get him on the field and present trouble for opponents. All that's left is for Cribbs to show people he can even play WR. This preseason seems to be showing more promise in that than ever before.

3) Ryan Pontbriand - as an epic head scracther for a 5th round choice that was too light to backup anyone on the oline, the guy has made pro Bowl for being a long snapper. I HATE thinking we give up 1 active roster spot on a guy that can't do anythign but long snap. I guess if we're gonna do it - he's good enough to be called elite for what he does. We've lost games on bad FG snaps or extra point tries so we'll keep him without complaining.

4) Shaun Rogers - Anyone that makes a Pro Bowl here on the defensive side of the ball isn't just getting handed charity. I'd like him a whole lot better if he wasn't sucking gas after playing 3 straight downs. When I see the hands on the hips - I know the olineman across from him realizes he's gonna have easy street the next play. If this guy EVER got himself into the RIGHT kind of playing shape (a la Suh) his best freind Casey Hampton says he'd kill people. I believe it. This guy poses the potential of being an X-factor difference maker we need OR he can leaving us wondering what-if he ever came in shape. My dream is to see him lining up next to Roth or Benard so we can see what sic em, sock em and sack em is supposed to look like.

5) Athyba Rubin - I'm gonna give Alo alot of cred for telling me not to make a premature conclusion about this guy durign his rookie year. Because I'm stubborn and I don't always when I really should be - this guy flat out knocked my socks off in 2009 as our most improved defender against the point of attack on the apex. Bryan Cox REALLY improved the way he came out of his stance so his leverage prevented him from losing any ground whatsoever. Good job by Alo. My Nikes tasted nasty! There's your buddy Flugel getting it wrong again.

6) Jerome Harrison - I haven't been impressed so far this preseason because he set the bar so high at the close of last season. I DID see how he could rush for over 1900 yards in the Pac 10. He's got deceptive power and weighs almost 20 more pounds than Greg Pruitt used to when he was one of the strongest guys in the NFL. Aside from that, he's hard to see until the last second which distracts defenders from beign able to get into ideal tackling position on him.

7) Matt Roth - I've never seen a guy his weight remove the base of more Offensive Tackles outweighing him by 50-75 pounds. There's a 2 gap dream from a guy with the talent to be a DI heavy weight wrestler that got a scholarship for being able to win one on ones by removing the opponent's legs. The carry over to the football field is soooo fun to watch. He brings what guys that needed to pick a side of the tackle could not bring by controlling both sides of the bigger athlete he WINS consistently. That's what made saying good bye to guys like Alex Hall and Kam Wimbley relatively easy this offseason. He seemed to be our most impactful player down the stretch.

8) Alex Mack - VERY nice to get an intelligent kid responsible for callign alot of the blocking schemes. After getting sentenced to Shaun Rogers for most of the early parts of camp - this guy really came into his own down the stretch of last season. It may not have been the sexy pick bit let's try to remember Philly deemed Hank Fraley too old to start about 4 years ago.

9) Eric Steinbach - I never agreed with all the criticism he got. He's REALLY good at pulling and trapping. He's also great at hustling to make blocks downfield. He's been an incredible help to Joe Thomas as a rookie and then Alex Mack last year as a rookie. Aside from that, the savvy vet knows alot of tricks of the trade and he was pretty valuable to our 8th ranked runnign game in 2009. Do I need really need to remind anyone he replaced Joe Andruzzi on the blind side? Let's try to understand we had more than just Joe Thomas blocking all 8-9 men in the box expecting run. The last month or two, our run blocking was pretty freakin good considering how often we had to problem solve injuries on the right side of center . Now we've got those 9 men in the box knowing our left side is arguably our strongest side right?

10) Marcus Benard - If we ever get Roth on his side of the field - it's gonna be pretty freakin fun to watch. And I don't feel like saying freakin. This guy was undrafted but I'll forever hold him in high regards for what he did to the rapist. The Rooneys and the rapist may have purchased their way out of legal trouble; BUT karma reminded me he was gonna pay one way or the other.

11) D'Qwell Jackson - I got mixed feelings about him BUT I've witnessed how much David Bowens decayed in 1 offseason along with how unimpressed Barton and Maiava have left me. He was once my favorite pick. I'm hoping this becomes a big season. When he was asked during his time off what part of his game he felt he could improve most during the time he has had to reflect from the sidelines - he said he wanted to be more instictive in terms of catching plays at the front end with qucikness instead of finishing them at the backend with speed. I don't think we've seen his best football yet and I don't care about tackle volumes unless we're getting off the field.

12) Jake Delhomme & Seneca Wallace - they're both gonna have their value and matchup places. Delhome had a career passer rating of 84 which is way better than anythign we've put on the field recently. We need experience and leadership that I see him displaying while the games aren't counting yet. Wallace looks like he can be reliable too if he is needed via injury or performance disappointment in front of him.

13) TJ Ward - I think Poker asked who the QB of our defense is. I can see this guy beign that if Jackson is unable to answer the bell this year. After seeing Safeties like Troy Polly, Ed Reed, Bob Sanders, and Adrian Wilson show how they completely change the game - this guy has a promising quality about him. Others have mentioned how much they miss Eric Turner. This guy can really change the way we play defense if Rob Ryan gets some pressure up front.

14) Ben Watson & Evan Moore - these 2 guys could completely open up last year's no fly zone in centerfield. It HAS to make life easier on the starting QB as well as the younger WRs. It's a perk we've been missing. I think both are healthier than Winslow was from the hips down to have more impact at helping to set the edge if they need to block. Winslow was a great athlete BUT we weren't kidding anybody when we tipped off the reality he was only in to throw to, which made us very predictable.

15) Peyton Hillis - Another guy I was quick to wonder where he would fit in seeing how the rationale for Hardesty was bigger tailback size than our current guys and more explosively gift wrapped at 220-225 pounds with great hands. Well, as he's been inured - Hillis showed us 240 pounds worth of decepetive speed and reminders of the Kevin Mack that once put Greg Lloyd to sleep on contact. Not to give you the heebeegeebees but I'm all gewgew eyed about him today.

16) Robaire Smith - a VERY underrated player on our defense that seems to be getting better like a fine wine the more he ages. I'm not really gonna panic about our defense NOW that Rubin proved he can play NT which makes Rogers doable at 1 end and Robaire doable for the other. Now that means our 2nd tier of rotation is Robinson, Schaeffering and Coleman and/or Mosely. Geathers is gonna have to be practice squaded if he stays.

17) Phil Dawson - games are gonna ride on his foot and green bay was hopefully a positive foreshadow.

18) Lawrence Vickers - I've never seen him enjoying football more than when he can line up in front of Hillis and clear bodies out like a John Deere tractor. Have you seen how excited he's been with his role this year? He's running around after plays like he's having more fun than he's ever had here. I got goose bumps seeing that. he also reminded me he had good hands when he got here with his uncontested TD reception. It's amazing at how much better he responds to passes above the grass and out in front of him. HUGE difference.

19) Montario Hardesty - He was the talk of training camp early on until he got slowed by an injury. The news is everyone is still high on the fumes of his gears and there's plans for him this year. I'm intrigued. Living in TN I still remember Lane Kiffin saying the most impressive player that turns the most heads in practice is easily Hardesty. Then I saw him play to see why. I'm very intrigued.

20) James Davis - I've never lost my first impression of him. I'm seriously wondering if we can't try to make this guy into a slot receiver. We've got depth at RB that we've never had before.

Other players of importance:

Eric Wright - I've seen some REALLY good stuff and he hasn't had much help with our pass rush this preseason.

Joe Haden - He made alot of tackles in space yesterday and he's got some good coverage skills in the sense I'm sually finding him right on the hip of veteran WRs working with a repcision of Aaron Rodgers.

Sheldon Brown - I didn't like that Safety idea at first but he's getting burnt more than our younger corners over the first 3 weeks IMO. Philly has always had a top rank pass rush so our vanilla preseason packages might have made him re-consider that Safety move. Elam isn't impressing anyone right now.

Chris Gocong - He's shown me more than anyone else this preseason inside at LBer.

Titus Brown - I'm actually really pleasantly surprised by him at ILBer.

Shawn Lavauo - Has looked like a vet even though we're probably only seeing vanilla looks thus far.

Tony Pashos - Not too bad for a first outing with a challenge like Suh. The more he plays the sharper he should look. I also doubt most matchups will be tougher than Suh.

Robo & MoMass - Hard working kids by the sounds of it where they're more interested in NFL paychecks than being paid by Revlon and Maybelline in the big city like Edwards Scissorhands. It's a little easier to forecast success for guys not feeling like playing football in Ohio for large fortunes is such a drag. Character HAS to count at such an important position we need to rely on for success.

Scott Fujita - He'll be fine when we break out our real schemes and end all the vanilla.

Reggie Hodges - Did I see another punt go to an opponet's 14 yard line yesterday when he could have padded his average with a touch back? How dare him!

Jason Trusnik - there isn't anything he can't do. BTW, he was a STs player of the month in NY for those thinking Maiava needs to make this team instead.

Blake Costanzo - Meet our version Larry Izzo. That said, I saw some pretty good ILBing from him vrs St Louis in very limited action.

Brian Schaffering, Derreck Robinson and Kenyon Coleman all possess the ability to rotate in as starters. Same with CJ Mosely. Robinson was the guy that made me ask who's #67 more than once vrs St Louis. I'm convinced he's got the goods.

I'm hoping David Bowens has something left after he offered up some inspirational leadership and impressive instincts at the close of last year. He policed the line of scrimmage pretty well considering he had to make a position change and he wasn't best known for footspeed. He seemed better at his new position than the one he was more accustomed to.

If you made it this far - God Bless ya and thanks!
- Tom F.

On the other board, we have at least two people who think we should snap up Coles. I'm not one of those folks.

I think he's done in the NFL. If Engram is on the roster bubble, what makes us think that Coles would do any better to make our roster?

Under a special dispensation for a town that's had a tough summer, you get one day of your life back today.

It's sports-related only -- no marriages, anniversaries, births of the kids or grandkids.

So what day do you choose?

It's public, too. The day you get back has to be in a scrapbook everyone can page through.

So pick a day.
Would you take Ohio State's Cie Grant, cheating up from the edge, ready to roar in from the Ohio State 1-yard line in the second overtime, then spin Miami quarterback Ken Dorsey like a wobbly top, and end maybe the greatest game ever?

That would be a lot of Clevelanders' keeper because this is such an Ohio State town, and because it was the first championship in so long.

Or how about Ohio State, down nine at the Big House with seven minutes to play, then Troy Smith started slipping tackles and buying time until Anthony Gonzalez went up for the ball as the third receiver behind Santonio Holmes and Ted Ginn Jr., and came down a Buckeyes legend?

That might be your memory. Listen to the silent night falling over Ann Arbor, which had expected victory all afternoon.

Gary Collins hauls in a TD pass on his trademark post pattern in front of Houston's Zeke Moore in a 1971 game at Municipal Stadium. Collins caught three touchdown passes in the Browns' victory over the Baltimore Colts in the 1964 NFL title game, Cleveland's last championship in a major pro sport.

You might prefer Cleveland's most recent championship in 1964. The memories of it might be in black and white now. So was the TV transmission then -- if you could get it, with a doctored antenna, watching through the static and snow. There's Gary Collins, breaking free again!

How about any night in the mid-'90s, when baseball owned the city? The Jacobs Field P.A. is playing a bell tolling, cowbells are jangling in the packed stands, but only until Albert Belle holds out his arm, putting the still in the night as he steps into the batter's box. It was New Year's Eve every night, with honking car horns celebrating victory in the summer darkness.

How about Bernie Kosar going deep down the north sideline to Webster Slaughter in overtime to beat the Steelers when only a TD would do? Regular place-kicker Matt Bahr had hurt his knee in the game. Of the blocking technique on a prospective field goal attempt by Harry Holt, the emergency kicker, Ozzie Newsome, told teammates,
"Get low, boys!" That day lifted us up, all right.

Or would it be that arctic night on the lakefront last year when the Browns beat up the Steelers, in a reversal of a long, tired script? Can we bottle that chill and introduce these late August days to autumn with a whiff of it?

What about the night LeBron James scored 48 points against the Pistons, including the last 25? He's dribbling, dribbling at the top of the key, about to get to the rim for the winning layup. The refs swallow their whistles and let Jason Maxiell treat James' left arm like a wishbone. Can we stop that tape right there, when it seemed like the good times with him would go on forever?

Wait. Wait. Eric Metcalf is breaking into the open on two punt returns against Pittsburgh, and he becomes Ted Ginn, skittering through Michigan, who becomes Josh Cribbs burning Kansas City twice. Those are three days you need.
Kenny Lofton scores from second base on a passed ball in the eighth inning of Game 6 of the 1995 ALCS in Seattle. Lofton's run gave the Tribe a 3-0 lead and the Indians went on to a 4-0 triumph to win the series and return to the World Series for the first time in 41 years. Covering home for Seattle is pitcher Randy Johnson. The umpire is Drew Coble.

Kenny Lofton is flying around third in Seattle. Kevin Mack is bulling into the end zone in the Astrodome. Daniel Gibson can't miss in the fourth quarter. Will Allen is intercepting Michigan near the goal line. All good days, every one of them.

There is a lot more to love than just championships, though. Take the day Jack Nicklaus shot a 68 at age 58 in the final round of the 1998 Masters. He walked up the hill to the 18th green, applauded every step of the way, waving like a spike-shod pope, luminous in the golden slashes of late afternoon light. It was really his valedictory.
Jack doesn't play competitively anymore, but he does in my head. And so do all the others, on all their fields, through all the days memory keeps fresh.

We wait for someone to fill today as fully as these men filled yesterday. Until then, pick a day.
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Footballs are flying, and so are some opinions as Terry Pluto's talkin':
About the Browns...

1. With the Browns opening the regular season Sept. 12 in Tampa, it's time to check on the Kellen Winslow deal. The former Brown caught 77 passes for the Bucs last season, by far their leading receiver. Former Brown Antonio Bryant was next with 39. Winslow played all 16 games, averaged 11.5 yards per catch and had only five drops. He did have another knee surgery after the season and may not play in any preseason games. At 27, the big issue with Winslow is his durability -- will his knees hold up?

2. In return for Winslow, the Browns received a second rounder (Mohamed Massaquoi) in 2009 and a fifth rounder in 2010 that was used with Alex Hall and another middle-round pick to bring Sheldon Brown and Chris Gocong to Cleveland. The Browns coaches are pleased with both players, as Brown and Gocong should start. Gocong has been very effective at inside linebacker in the 3-4 system. Hall was waived by the Eagles, then claimed by the New York Giants.

3. We'll see what happens during the regular season, but several Browns coaches insist the receivers were not as bad as they seemed last season -- that they often were open, but there were a lot of poor throws by the quarterbacks. They point to the preseason improvement to make that point with two new quarterbacks in town. In 2008 and 2009, the Browns completed an NFL-worst 49 percent of their attempts. The last time the Browns were under 50 percent was 1974 in the Mike Phipps era.

4. The quarterbacks would counter that the receivers didn't help. Stats Inc. credited the Browns with 39 dropped passes last season, only Kansas City (48) was worse. Chansi Stuckey, Jerome Harrison and Mohamed Massaquoi each had seven drops. Robert Royal had six. Braylon Edwards had only one with the Browns, five total last season.

5. The Browns have been pleased with how Brian Robiskie, Stuckey and Massaquoi have bonded as a group, staying after practice and working together -- rather than worrying about playing time. Joshua Cribbs also is a part of this group, but he works at so many positions that he isn't always available for extra practice. The Browns have been stressing to Robiskie that he can be an impact receiver.

6. The coaches remain convinced Cribbs will make some significant contributions as a receiver. Some of it also may come in the Wildcat offense. As one of the coaches said, "Just tell Joshua that he can't do something -- and he wants to prove you wrong." That's why they are very patient with him in the passing game.

7. Another huge upgrade is Ben Watson and tight end, with Evan Moore as a backup. They also plan to use Moore as a slot receiver. For most of last season, there was no tight end who could be trusted to catch passes as Steve Heiden was hurt and Royal has poor hands.

8. For his career, 108 of Watson's 167 catches have been for first downs. He has caught 33 passes for at least 20 yards, and 20 for scores. The point is Watson is capable of making clutch catches. The Browns believe New England had so many talented receivers, there was no need to throw to Watson that often. In Cleveland, that can change.

9. It may not matter to Jim Brown, but based on emails and calls to talk shows, Browns fans have little sympathy for him possibly boycotting the ring of honor ceremony.

10. I will be talking about the Browns at other topics Monday at 7 p.m. at the Wooster Library. Admission is free. I will be glad to sign books for anyone who wants to bring them along.

Hall Of Fame member Joe DeLamielleure talks about the Browns...
Mark Duncan / Associated Press
Former Browns star lineman Joe DeLamielleure is bullish on the impact Jake Delhomme will have with this year's team.

Question: Is it true you recruited Ben Watson?
Answer: I recruited him and coached him when I was at Duke [where Watson played as a freshman before transferring to Georgia]. He is a football player, a great kid who always wants to learn and get better.

Q: He must have been smart to go to Duke.
A: Better believe it. He wanted to be an engineer. I'm not his coach, but this guy has about a 38-inch vertical [jump]. You saw that one-handed catch he made in the end zone [against St. Louis], he can make more of those. I'd put him in the slot, and see if any safety can cover him. I doubt they can.

Q: You now live in Charlotte, do you have an opinion on [former Carolina Panther] Jake Delhomme?
A: The guy reminds me of Brian Sipe, he really does. I am talking about his leadership. He's a throw back. He's not a pretty quarterback. Like Brian, he doesn't have a great arm. He had to wait for a chance to play. I'm telling you, he is a winner.

Q: What happened last season?
A: You'd really need to have a long talk with him and his coaches, but they changed the system. ... I'm just saying he's been a good quarterback in this league for a long time, he'll help the Browns.

Q: Why are you upbeat about the Browns?
A: Because [President Mike Holmgren] is a football man. ... He brought in two class individuals who are good football players in Delhomme and Ben Watson. That's how you build your team, bringing in class guys who are character guys and it rubs off. I think his record speaks for itself. You have to go with guys who know how to win.

Q: What should young players think of the Browns?
A: [Before coming to the Browns in 1980], I always knew the Browns were great. ... You should [think] to yourself, "They set the bar very high and I want to be a player like that." They had a rich history. Paul [Warfield] was in the front office [when he joined the Browns]. I'd see Paul Warfield walking around and I'd say, "Damn he was good. I hope I can be that good." That's what it's all about. I hope someday that young kids walk through here, and I'm sure they're not going to look at a right guard, but they're going to look at these [Ring of Honor] guys and they're going to say, "Man, someday I'd like to do that."

I got my copy of the NFL preview issue in the mail yesterday but didn't look at it until tonight and saw a seven page article on Mangini titled "Five days in the life of an NFL coach." I figured most of you don't get the magazine so I went ahead and scanned it for everyone to read. I didn't scan the first two pages because it's just a picture of him behind his desk with the title and underneath it has, "To many Browns fans, Eric Mangini is overpaid, overmatched and overdue to be fired. Wait until they get a load of his radical new strategy: Being himself."

With Davis looking improved and the rookie getting back to health, I could see the Browns liquidate Harrison for some value. He is a FA next year and really doesn't have a future with the club.

Then we have Mr. Hillis who will get carries as well.

-Delhomme is what we thought he is (at least a few of us)...a damned good QB who had 1 god awful year. Clearly the best QB in a Browns Uni since Kosar. A lot of you seem to be pulling for Wallace to start and/or get a ton of action, I'm hoping the opposite. The less we see of Wallace the better, he's a good back-up but he's no Jake Delhomme. Prediction : Barring major injuries, Delhomme makes a push for the pro-bowl this season.

-Even in the very first training camp session, I commented how much better Cribbs was looking at WR. People kept claiming the opposite as TC and pre-season games played out ...but I am hoping he's changing your minds.

-Harrison has done little to nothing to impress me. He's not good enough as a feature back to be putting the ball on the ground as much as he has been. Prediction: When all is said and done, Harrison will be our 3rd down back ...if that. He's not, or at least shouldn't be a feature back.

-Hillis is a beast. He's the guy I'd like to see in combination with Hardesty this season. (if Hardesty is as good as advertised)

-Ben Watson is better than I hoped.

-Daboll is who we thought he is. (a couple of us) A smart, young O-coordinator who was growing leaps and bound towards the end of last season, and is continuing to grow into what looks to be a creative, intelligent coach.

-I hope Haden takes the starting CB spot so that Brown takes Elams spot.

-Elam sucks.

-Sheldon Brown is not as good as advertised.

-Not too worried about our D ...they look disciplined for the most part, and we are currently missing key components. Pre-season D is usually more vanilla than even the O, we're not showing much.

I'll stick with my pre pre-season prediction of 7-9. That being said, I am even more positive about our team. I could easily see a few breaks going our way, and us getting 10 wins and a play-off berth. (again, barring injuries ..we aren't deep enough yet) Yes, I said it.

(I know the game is not over yet, so I may have more to add)

Browns' Sorensen carted off field against Lions - NFL- nbcsports.msnbc.com

Cleveland Browns defensive back Nick Sorensen has been taken off the field on a backboard after getting hit by two Detroit Lions. Sorensen was covering a kickoff when he was blocked simultaneously by Detroit's Caleb Campbell and Andre Fluellen on Saturday night. His teammates on the kickoff team dropped to a knee, grabbed hands and bowed their heads. Cleveland's entire team and coaching staff later walked across the field to get closer to him. Both team's medical personnel evaluated Sorensen on the field and slowly got him onto a backboard for him to be taken off the field.

It was really shocking to see.... because you could tell right away something was wrong. The other browns players almost immediately motioned to get medical staff on the field, and the rest of the team quickly followed. They went to commercial, and when they came back the entire medical staff was on the field as was the entire browns team. Players were kneeling on both sides. I couldn't help but notice the sinking feeling in my stomach.

This is terrible.... I'm not as mortified as I would be if it was one of our starters, but I'm mortified nonetheless. No one wants to see this happen to any player, let alone someone on your team.

I really hope Sorensen is OK.... If anyone reads or hears any news about his status or the nature of his injury, please post it.
