I think that's it in a nutshell.

The prosecution fucked up by not adding other charges or seeking other penalties. They could have added conspiracy, wrongful death, and I'm sure there are HUNDREDS of other charges they could have added that WOULD have ended up with a conviction.

They let the public guide their actions and the public (in general) is kinda dumb. And vengeful.
