Have you played WOW? I guarantee you there will not be an mass exodus from WOW. Some People will play both. WOW has over 10 Million subscribers. I would bet you that at the end of 2012 they will still have between 8-9 million. Guild wars was going to kill WoW. Rift was going to Kill WoW. LOTR was going to kill WOW. None of them did and neither will SWTOR.

| Yah, I've played nearly every major, and most minor MMOG's since Ultima Online beta. WoW got old for me pretty quick, I couldn't quite make it to 70 without getting bored of it. But my wife loved it and she's hated every other game I ever played, so that was nice. She was addicted to that auction house, like it was more fun than going to the mall or something. She got in beta with me and was shocked how similar the 2 games are, except SWTOR has improved on so much. WoW will live on, but you will be surprised at how many subscribers it will lose after this game launches. None of those games you listed were even close to captivating the attention of the WoW enthusiast ...too different. This game was made specifically aimed at the average WoW player. We'll see, you may be right ...but I think it's the largest budgeted MMO in history. I'll have to check. As far as space combat, about 2% of the game. Seems strange I know for Star Wars, but almost the entire game is landlocked. I have yet to venture into space at all. There's still magic users, melee', and ranged. It seems pretty solid, especially for a game not even launched yet. I remember WoW launch, God what a debacle.

yeah well about 1/3 of my guild of about 70 players had SWTOR beta invites, and weren't all that impressed with the game. It's just anecdotal. And again, for me personally and there are many out there with me. It's not the same with a lightsaber, blaster, ect. I used to play the Dungeons and Dragons with the dice and making your own dungeons on paper and so did a lot of wow players. So all the races, dragons, weapons, and lore are something that's important to me. again, I think WOW will die in the next 5 years. But not because of SWTOR or any other specific game. But because other than sports franchises where players are new every year, games can't hold people's attention forever. Even great gameplay begins to feel stale and repeated. WOW hit it's peak in Wrath of the Lich King and is on it's way down. I'm just arguing than one competing game is not going to be it's downfall. and besides :P Blizzard is working on TITAN now, probably the next game I'll play.

Well, as much as the Steam copyright protection for a single player game pissed me off, and still does, once past the initial frustration Skyrim has been nothing short of amazing. I was tired and about to fall asleep before I started playing last night, and went on to play for 6 straight hours, the tiredness disappeared. The world is just so damn realistic it's easy to get taken in and lost for hours on end. Combat is about the same as Oblivion, the added kill sequences/ finishing moves are pretty sweet. The menus were a bit confusing at first, but the more I get used to them the easier it is to deal with over the clunkier Oblivion interface (by comparison), you can really tell this game was optimized for consoles. I didn't even realize I jumped 2 levels last night till I went into the menu system and it gave me an option to up my magika, health or stamina. I level up notification would be nice. The perk system is pretty cool, it definitely helps you think more long term on your character than short term. Installing mods happens to be easier than ever, no OBMM or archive invalidater required, just check a box in the data menu to use lose files. I've yet to try it without an internet connection, so no problems loading yet. Already used the 2gig + ram hack, hell, got 12 gig in my new quad core pc might as well use it all right?

This game IS amazing. I too was tired as hell last night from staying up too late the night before playing Skyrim, but when I fired up the game my tiredness was gone. 4+ hours later and I was off to bed far too late again.

Used to 5 box WoW. Had a mixed group of Paladin, Priest, Shaman, Mage, Necro (or Warlock, or was that EQ? lol ). Was able to solo all the 5 man content on normal and all but the lich king five mans on heroic. Had a level 80 druid/rogue too just for giggles. Started another 3 shaman to try and do 5 man pvp with a pally/shamanx4 group. Got them all to level 80 and promptly burned out. Also multiboxed EQ back in the day (Ranger, Enchanter, Cleric). Originally played text based mud called Legends of Futures Past. (Early 90's) Glad to be out. Wasted a lot of time on MMORPG's. It certainly was fun though. |
