Ted Stepien (June 9, 1925 – September 10, 2007) was the former owner of the National Basketball Association's Cleveland Cavaliers. After becoming wealthy as the founder of Nationwide Advertising Service, Stepien purchased the Cavaliers in the spring of 1980. A December 6, 1982, article in the New York Times described the Cavaliers during Stepien's ownership as "the worst club and most poorly run franchise in professional basketball."
this won't end well

lol he fired joe tait? wow

"the team was referred to locally at this time as the 'Cleveland Cadavers'"

might have to bring that one back

"Over the course of the 1981–82 season alone, Stepien fired three head coaches and hired four: "

WHAT

...

WHAT

""In fact, all of these questionable moves led the NBA to institute what is commonly known as the "Stepien Rule," which states that a team cannot trade its first-round pick in consecutive years."

oh god

i can't breathe

lol

"Stepien thought about renaming the team the "Ohio Cavaliers" and playing portions of its home schedule in nearby non-NBA cities such as Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and Toronto to increase the fan base. He had also threatened to move the team to Toronto and rename them the Toronto Towers, but ultimately Stepien decided to sell the team to Cleveland businessmen George and Gordon Gund prior to the 1983–84 season for $20 million. During his tenure as Cavaliers owner, the Cavaliers went 66–180, had five different coaches, and had losses of $15 million. [2]"

...

holy shit this guy makes art modell look good

Wow....

There's just nothing I can say to that. A guy who's so bad the NBA makes a RULE to prevent owners from being stupid?

I'm pretty much speechless.

We had a pretty good draft, and I'd like to start seeing some results.
Fans already looking to next year and I don't blame them.
I think we will have things to be excited about that we lacked last year and we have some real facepalm moments just like last year.
It's going to be tough.
We aren't Barking Hard for nothing.

LMFAO!!!!

Any of you younguns who have never heard of Stepien, well learn this stuff and learn it good. He is legendary, and no self respecting Cleveland sports fan should not know of him.

He also owned a pro softball team called the Cleveland Competitors, and they were actually pretty good. They used to be on TV back then.

Stepien was a complete idiot, the guy even drooled and spit when he talked. To the day he died he thought he was a really good owner and cutting edge LOL. I was a huge Cavs fan back then and those were dark times, for real. The Gunds did a great job once they took over. Their first move was riding the coat tails of World B Free, who was basically responsible for the Cavs not moving. Dude lit it up and was fun as hell to watch. Then they traded Roy Hinson for the first pick in the draft, which was Brad Daugherty. Add on Mark Price in the second round, drafting Ron Harper, trading Kevin Johnson for Larry Nance and voila, some great teams.

Well I'm not really a "Cleveland" sports fan and I didn't get into the NBA until the Vancouver Grizzlies came along and that little experiment was like a Molotov cocktail of failure.

This guy, Stepien sounds like a world class chap. Honestly, can't say the current Cavs owner is all that bright, guaranteeing that the Cavs will win a championship before SheBron... Sorry to rail this off-topic but that just doesn't sound as a great move in my books. I know you want to boost the morale of the fan base but ultimately I digress.

The Stepien Rule... wow.

And let me get this straight. There was/is/used to be PROFESSIONAL Softball?

BEER LEAGUE!!!!
