All I see is this being is more freedom being taken away and our constitution being compromised.

Obama is getting way out of control.

THis Redskins issue really has me torn... I really dont know where I stand on it..

On one side.. I can totally see why it is a blatant racial slur that people are se-sensitized to. If there was a team named te black-skins this name would have been out 40 years ago. I feel terrible for those who are offended by.. Im also kind of mortified that I arent more offended by it.

    on the other side..

You can say that it isnt derragatory as much as it is honoring the fierce spirit of the people and culture it represents. Even if ic CAN be interpreted as deregatory, that is an interpretation and due to this country having freedom of speech and all that, you cant tell the team to change it just because some people dont like it.. that goes against Freedom itself..

Then again.. Native Americans should have the Freedom to not be mocked or have these symbols and names representing them is a discriminatory light.

This is a really really complicated issue

It's a blatant racial slur to those who choose to see it as such. It's a symbol of pride for others. Whatever the original meaning or symbolism might have been, it is and does no longer. This PC country is a joke.

The owner and the fans want to change the name ...fine, otherwise get your noses out of their business and don't support the brand if you don't like it. It is allegedly still a free country after all. (lol)

I have always felt the "Redskins" name to be honoring the American Indian Culture. At age 60, I am confused and feel used by today's controversy. Did somebody just wake up and realize the word was derogatory? Why wasn't this issue brought to the front years ago? It's almost as though some trouble maker has run out of things to complain about. If this is really an insult to our Indian brothers please get rid of it. I really believe it (the name "Redskins") bestows an inherent American honor remembering the first true inhabitants of our great land. Does this mean the "Reds" of Cincinnati are next? I feel this is a travesty. I don't believe it to be racist at all and wonder what percentage of Indian heritage find it offensive. If it is offensive to anyone, I sincerely apologize for my ignorance.

So they're gonna stop having a Leprechaun run out during "Fighting Irish" games right? That's right, nobody cares because its silly.

From what I understand.. there name is the redskins because it is supposed to be honoring the 20 or so native americans on one of the early or original rosters.. also because they werent allowed to use the name "Braves" due to a city licensing issue and the potential that theteam was going to move.

I totally see the reason for keeping it.

But like I said.. the term "Redskin" is pretty blatant. If that were done with any other culture or nationality I think it would have been removed years ago. Since we almost wiped out their entire race (a true untold historic tragedy) we dont really make much of it.. its just like a team name being called the Barbarian Babylonians.. or the Myan Mayhem.. we wouldnt think twice because those cultures dont exist anymore.. they are charactures of themselves in history.. whereas Native American are still here, and still live with the reprocussions from the past.

It needs to change. But the patent issue won't be resolved for a couple years at best. It'll change, but only in a few more years.

I've had a problem with the redskins name and the Indians (particularly their use of the chief wahoo logo, which IMO is worse and I refuse to wear it) for a while now.

I'm sorry if you don't think it is offensive, but many people do. So if it doesn't offend you, then it's not about you. If you're not Native American, it's certainly not about you.

But I do not agree that any one person speaks for a whole group of people, and so to have found a group of native Americans to back your team name in its first days, does not in any way mean that the rest of the Native American population should not care, or didn't care. They were not asked. The rest were not even thought of, "hey those redskins you came across are pretty good at football, we should name the team after them" And you can't tell me there weren't people using the term "redskins" with the same tone as they were using the term "nigger".

It's not about being politically correct, that's just a blanket fall back for when people get in trouble for saying something they probably knew they shouldn't. It's about consideration for the feelings of others, which is apparently a hard concept for people to buy into these days.

Politically correct shouldn't be some huge taboo, you choose for yourself whether or not to be, based on how much you care.

If they want to name it after Washington D.C. and the politicians, how about the Washington Liars or the Washington Hypocrites

Question MalcomBrown, you said if it does not offend you then it is not about you, and if your not Native American it is certainly not about you. I understand what you mean, but what if someone is Native American and they are not offended, it would still be about them.
Just because someone does not agree or see things the same as you does not meant they have no reason to have an opinion or have it heard.

This is a free country. If you want the government to have ever more control of what you do with your company, property, opinion, etc ...you might be happier somewhere else.

You can find a small group of people offended by just about everything. You don't like it, don't support it ...and feel free to express your opinion! Just don't try to force your will on others.

I see things all the time that offend me. You know what I do? Turn it off, or look away, or express my opinion, or refuse to give them my support. I don't believe a baseball or football logo is infringing upon life, liberty, or the pursuit of happiness.

With how popular the MLB and NFL are in this country, I think it's definitely an issue if a team is considered to have a racist logo or name. Think about how much publicity the World Series and the Super Bowl get. Heck, each day the local news reports on their in-state or city teams. It's not something that can simply be turned off in this day and age.
