The Safeties

In today's league, I don't even use the term "starter" all that much, especially in a defensive backfield in 2020 when a safety might be a linebacker (!).

Burris did himself some good last season. He's bounced around so good on him. Probably the first time he can go into a season feeling pretty comfortable that he'll get regular snaps for somebody. He's a pretty big guy at 212, does the new box thing well.

I think we'll draft a guy like that too. Redwine, Murray, and either Harris or Ward can all play the backend, Murray the slot. It'd be a nice mix.

Money Mitch is the forgotten man. He's tough-AF. He's an in-his-prime, 28 yr-old, 3.6 million dollar proven vet.

Oh, and as far as the room goes, Tavierre Thomas is a lock. Prief loves him.

How many DB's did we carry last year? 8? 9? 10?

Good question. Burris is affordable and he was one of the few guys the new coaches will like on 2019 film. I think he'll be here. Redwine is a lock. Murray is versatile and good but I think we have to sign him, too, if we want him. He could be out if Chris Harris is in, even though they technically play different positions, both cover the slot.

I think we can kinda-sorta make the assumption we'll sign Harris, Ward, or Boston. I'd feel pretty safe starting there. And an OT, but the question is at what level. The other two spots that really make sense are TE and IDL. We need a wide-body.

Here’s an all-safety draft, meaning this would be the top draftable safety every time our name comes up. If we sign a free agent safety, I could live with any of the first five.

Could have taken Delpitt or McKinney with the 10th overall. No matter. We aren’t taking a safety there, and they prob won’t be available in round 2.

Based on the glut of good f/a FSs, we should look mostly at SS types, box guys. Dugger is. I think McKinney and Jones are. Not entirely sure on the rest.

Dugger is an elite PR, compared to Cribbs (because he's big). But it sounds like some people think he's raw as a position player. Others just love him, insist he'll go R2.

So, here’s our room. It’s really not a bad room at all. You could call it average, but both newly signed safeties outperformed Damarious last year.

And as many here agree, don’t sleep on Redwine, and his energy for being a part of the Browns, like Mack, is enjoyable.

Karl Joseph
Andrew Sendejo
JT Hassell
Sheldrick Redwine

Joseph and Sendejo stabilize that room and bring an element of leadership with them. Maybe not a top notch room, but it has good guys who are reasonably talented to make the defense work.

Saw a nice tweet reminding us that Redwine was probably a steal, better than a lot of guys drafted ahead of him, and his versatility likely appeals to Joe Woods. Covers and tackles, CB background.

He has a very strong chance at being one of the two starters. Long-term of Chinn and Redwine is potentially awesome. If we got both Chinn and Gay in this draft, the middle of our defense would be transformed for a long while... but that's getting to be a tough get. Both could go R2, Chinn is showing up in some late R1s.

Further: Gay, Mack, Chinn, Redwine is so ideal for 2020. Would love it moving forward as far as LB/S.

A Redwine retweet:

I think it'll be Joseph and Delpit, they complement each other so ideally. But we're gonna be playing more DBs than LBs, so I bet Redwine is back with Delpit when Joseph goes up in the box with Mack.

I have a feeling he'd be happier if we'd only signed Joseph. But yeah, Sendejo is a late bloomer who benefits us for one season, probably.

I wonder if they'll think of our safeties like they say they're going to think of our D-line ... like hockey lines. Run'em in and out in shifts for freshness. That's supposed to be the new(ish) normal.
