The Safeties

I hope its ok to resurrect this old thread

interesting debate being had here about delpit
was he intended to play FS or SS?
knock on winfield was his height - problem is he now looks like an all pro
I thought delpit looked too slight to play SS in the NFL and I assumed he was going to play at FS
SS and LB seem to be position groups overlooked by some teams in todays game

I think this is a huge mistake
Its frustrating to watch winfield and brandon jones starting for teams at SS
this has been a problem unaddressed for 2 drafts
delpit might still be a superstar at FS
but for 2020 behind the LB'ers around the hash marks? we are open open open

If greedy or another good CB becomes available?
watch for the browns to plug him in at starting FS
for the browns to do anything this year the D must improve
If mack can play AND be effective? with greedy back at FS?
the SS problems go away

most safetys are interchangeable and learn both strong and free positions. Grant would probably play mostly free. Ronnie harrison would be my choice for Strong along side delpit.

they arent going to switch a CB to safety especially once into the season. they would be more likely to run Dime with 4 cb's greedy, KJ, denziel and mitchell all on the field.

i would be ok running this more and giving up more running yards to help against the pass.

Greedy is an outside CB. If they wanted to move a guy to Safety they could easily put Montrel Meander there. It's the position he played when he was brought here as a UDFA. They're trying to switch him to be a LB'er so he could play Delpit's role. How effective he plays it is a total unknown right now.

He's 602 215lbs. Delpit is 602 213lbs.

many converted CB's in the NFL are playing at FS
most FS we have had the last few years have been converted CB's

I would disagree and say most are not interchangeable with a few exceptions
Its not college, its the bigs

yea CB's that cant cut it playing Cb or are getting older convert ... its not going to happen

go listen to coaches linebackers learn all the positions as well. Joe woods has said the safetys in his scheme have to know both positions and will play in both positions soo....🤷‍♂️

the players in his scheme ? shouldnt the skills and experience of each man be considered first?
so he;s going to have delpit and redwine playing SS?
no wonder this D looks the worst in recent memory

sanjedo and joseph are both disasters
they cant tackle
they look confused and out of position
It looks to me as If 42 is playing hurt
sanjedo? keeps moving forward and wanting to play coverage underneath/the run
Its like he thinks he's the SS?
you are the FS you moron - cover the backside, help when needed and watch for the deep play/open receiver
DO NOT PLAY UNDERNEATH! If you miss there is nobody left to stop the TD
he played FS his entire career? damn.

fuggit just sign earl thomas and let him run the D
If he blows up the locker room just get richardson to beat the beegeezus out of him

we need to burn a number 1 pick on a strong safety
in todays game its a key position
that maybe against conventional wisdom but the position demands it IMO
we have "made do" now for years
but look how abrams has transformed that D in LV
and winfield jnr in tampa
you need an athlete who can tackle 240+ pound RB's/TE's and cover slot WR's
athlete's like that do not come in the 4th round
FS? we just are unlucky with redwine and delpit hurt
isnt redwine injured? still have high hopes for him

Sandejo didnt play bad against the cowboys had a team best 92.5 pff run grade caused the fumble, almost had a nice play on that threaded TD pass to cooper in-between 2 browns defenders. the busted coverage to ceedee wasn't sandejo's job it was joseph's busted coverage he is the problem and had a 37 pff grade against the boys.

sandejo had better a grade from PFF than everyone on the defense except myles, taylor, ward, malcom smith, and ronnie harrison thats it .

so lets get off the bang on sandejo for no reason

give me sandejo and ronnie harrison KJ is done. this isnt getting fixed this year and this is going to be the best.

SIDE NOTE: kevin johnson didnt play a snap? what gives?

Thing is Sendejo was supposed to a rotational FS. I'm ok with Joseph. He at least is physical and crushes WR's...after the catch.
Overall though we need help back there. I think Javonte Moffett, who played well in camp, might be getting more playing time soon. They signed him off the practice squad, but after Chubb's injury that can change this week.

Good luck to whoever steps in cause even if Sendejo sees less playing time offenses will attack whoever is there in his place.

his PFF grades?
well he's in on almost every play because he being targeted by the offence
they are passing at him they are running at him
they know exactly where our weaknesses on the field are
thats why a secondary is only as good as its weakest player

senjejo stands out like dogs balls on that D
If the FS is out of position? - its obvious TBF
Good luck to whoever steps in cause even if Sendejo sees less playing time offenses will attack whoever is there in his place.
they will find the weakest link and exploit it - Its their only job

I disagree completely ESD. He could have nailed the receiver or went for the ball. He did neither. He looks like he is always stuck in no man's land

ok
lets assume you guys are right about sendejo
but we gave up 38 points
so..who is playing worse on D than the safeties?

If he was on a really bad D? you wouldnt notice him
our D is on the verge of being really good, 2 or 3 players away
imagine its madden and sendejo is a 60 and the other players are 80's
he stands out

Of course you’d notice it. I noticed. Many here have noticed. The pundits notice. Surely Stephanski noticed???? 😏
