Cleveland Browns | Browns sign veteran TE Gaines

10.21.2009

The Browns have signed free agent tight end Michael Gaines.

Originally selected by the Carolina Panthers in the seventh round (232nd overall) of the 2004 NFL Draft, Gaines spent three seasons with the Panthers before being released on September 4, 2007. He has since spent time in Buffalo (2007), Detroit (2008) and the first four weeks of the 2009 season with Chicago. Prior to being released by the Bears on October 17, he saw action in one contest.

Gaines has appeared in 74 games with 41 starts in his six-year NFL career, and has registered 79 receptions for 810 yards with five touchdowns.

A three-year letterman (2001-03) at Central Florida, Gaines appeared in 23 games with four starts during his collegiate career and recorded 22 receptions for 306 yards with three touchdowns. A native of Tallahassee, Fla., the 6-2, 267-pounder attended Florida High School in Tallahassee.

Just read a tweet about "expecting to be short at tight end" as the reason for the signing.

Also, there's a slew of players out with the flu. It's really hit in the last 5-7 days.

I thought three words when I saw we signed a TE: CAN HE CATCH?

EDIT: He sounds like a journeyman that lacks the talent to stay on any roster.... :/
