Power Backs: Dwyer or Gerhart?

Who likes whom? Gerhart becomes the Great White Hope of NFL tailbacks, but he probably only runs a 4.6. That said, he has quick feet, runs with power, and cuts really fast.

Both guys are 235-ish, true power backs. Both guys can run (Gerhart can put a 4.5 down, Dwyer could run a 4.45 at his best). Both guys can cut. Both guys will happily run you over.

Thoughts?

I like Dwyer better. As Shep said, he's got better speed and overall athleticism. Gerhart's got great feet, but I'm not sure he's a feature back at the next level.

And if we're picking a back at the top of Round 2, I'd prefer to take a guy who does everything well. It's part of the reason why I'd probably take Ryan Mathews over Dwyer. He's got power, but he also can get skinny to squeeze through a hole and is more elusive in the open field.

I kinda like all three guys. I need to see more to separate. The fear on Gerhart is that he's too Brian Leonard, neither fish nor fowl... but I think he could be the Thunder in a Thunder & Lightning (with a Jerome Harrison).

I have feeling Dwyer might end up in round one.

If he runs in the mid-4.4's at the Combine, it'll happen. That said, he's not having the most impressive year: his YPC has dropped an entire yard from last year (from 7.0 to 6.0) and his production has been kind of up & down.

I hate the triple option offense he plays in; it's hard to tell what kind of runner he'll be at the next level when he goes from getting the ball on FB dives to having it pitched to him when he's already outside the tackle box. He flashes elite ability - like when he bounced a FB dive outside and took it to the house against Florida State - but you don't get to see it consistently.

Also, the offense doesn't do enough to get receiver Demaryius Thomas involved. There are two pretty obvious reasons why Thomas has been nicknamed "baby Calvin Johnson": his size (6'3", 229 lbs.) and his big play ability (averaging 24.9 yards per catch this year). Unfortunately, Thomas is also suffering from the Reggie Ball II that is Josh Nesbitt.
