The Offensive Line

As far as what eyes see and all that? I see the problem being QB/HC/OC and they seem to know it. Haven't been seeing jailbreaks but have seen a QB seeing PHANTOM pressure. He's not right at the moment but knowing that kid, he will be very soon.

PFF is good for facts and truth as opposed to "feel" or echo-chambered narratives. I love it. And yeah, Greg Robinson is doing everything right to get that extension. Kush is playing extremely good football (Jake Burns said something like, "Kush is just killing it" after watching tape).

And we traded two picks for Wyatt Teller. I keep thinking at some point we try him at RT, maybe during the bye week.

I think we'll draft a RT in Round 1. Keep Robinson and Tretter. Kush and Teller compete at RG. Both are above average and Teller might be better than that.
 
The QB holding on to the ball for a long time is, as we all know, a QB worst enemy.

I feel pretty good Freddie and Todd will get Baker out of the huddle faster in the coming weeks, which will translate to better everything, including quicker passes. Quick passing is, of course, an O-lineman's best friend.
 
I'm liking Baker's energy right now.

While he's being trashed for his game, with Jake Burns saying it was one of his worst as a pro, I'll take 325 with a 1/1 TD-INT being a bad performance any fucking day. Like, any day. I think people forget what a bad performance looked like from quarterbacks prior to Baker arriving.

Personally, I think that gave him confidence. The team showed collective improvement. He's talking about making corrections I agree with: Getting the ball out quicker, getting the basics right, playing fundamental in not getting ahead of his feet. He was also joking and having fun with it.

It isn't only Mayfield. Everyone on offense seemed in high spirits. I'm wondering if they saw on film a lot of what they wanted to see, and what they're working to address now is something everyone feels confident can be fixed.

Baker spoke about helping the OL, while Tretter spoke about what the OL needs to do: especially winning one-on-one battles, being confident in what they can do and bringing their best game. He also spoke about how the Rams can do a little of everything and the need to be prepared for everything they'll throw.

Perhaps it's just the rejuvination of coming off a win, but the guys all seem to be in a really good place. Loving that considering the offense isn't where they want to be, but they're not down on themselves or beating themselves up.
 
Baker is fine, he is just still inexperienced and playing behind a struggling Oline. That and the too-deep passing game doesnt help.

Who would have thought that the tackle position would be a problem, huh? /sarcasm

...and now OBJ apologized for the INT that went behind him. I watched that film a dozen times and the throw 'seemed' to indicate he was anticipating OBJ to sit down at that spot and not continue the route. Now with the apology, that seems to be the case. Bad route.

I also watched the Landry INT where the route got jumped. Lazy cut. If Landry had cut straight across instead of 'looping' a yard or two...that was a completion.

I think the concerns about Baker should be more about the WR's not being on the same page and not running crisp routes. That is why I think Higgins coming back will be a big gain. Plus, it will allow Landry to go outside and give Baker quicker targets, helping the OL.

The tackle position is a problem because of injuries. Hubbard is a short-timer but when all five play, the protection is very good, verifiably good. Any issues have been on the QB/OC/HC and they're owning it. Kush has been very good so far, no real dropoff as far as pass pro. Outplaying Zeitler so far.

But let's stay real on G-Rob: He's been good for us for a while now, the sample keeps getting larger. I just don't wanna do what we did with Schwartz, under appreciate very solid OT play like it's automatically replaceable.

I would not go get Trent Williams. I would look to upgrade Hubbard by trade if we could, integrate the guy over the bye if need be. Totally down for going after that Eagle if they'll take a 2nd, which is super aggressive.

I have to give the Browns credit in one area - this is a very accountable team.

Everyone has been very open about the mistakes they're making. They're showing that they're figuring out where it is going wrong and what they need to do to get it right.

Shep mentions the QB/OC/HC owning their part in the OL struggles, but that hasn't prevented the OL from speaking on their need to do better. As I mentioned, J.C Tretter was very open about it in his presser this week.

Which is why it is all the more important that I noted their confidence. We've seen this team acknowledge their mistakes in the past, but rarely do so with a confidence that you can visibly see.

This Rams game is huge for helping get our guys to where they need to be. As Tretter mentioned, it is a big litmus test. I feel like Baker needs a big game to help him settle in and get the monkey off his back. I feel like the OL needs a big game because if they can rock with the Rams, they can rock with anyone.

You can see the difference in Odell Beckham after getting his big game out of the way. You can see Myles Garrett knows he's a real one. I'd love to see Mayfield and the OL coming off the back of a big game.
 
Also, Demetrius Harris has an 80 pass blocking score. Bet he'll be chipping for McCray tomorrow.

Good teams find a way. We have very good depth in our defensive backfield, let's see just how good. Bringing guys like Carrie, Mitchell, and Whitehead off the bench is a luxury. Let's hope one of the starting CBs is okay. I vote for Greedy. 21 needs a reset.

Looks like Hubbard is back and looking good. I know we slag him, but when we have our starting five OL on the field, they've been quite good. Robinson has yet to have a bad quarter, let alone a bad game. Tretter is right now the best center in the NFL and needs extended.

The cupboard is f-ing so far from bare. Again, we traded TWO draft picks, neither a 7th, for Wyatt Teller. The team has plans for him. And we know how high they've been on Drew Forbes, who returns in a month. How hurt is Kendall Lamm? Is he back.

There's absolutely nothing preventing this team from fielding a good offensive line. They have the coach and they have the players. They just need to stay healthy and Baker needs to stop bailing out of good pockets. He's missing scads of open receivers while waiting for something to develop.

I'm usually loath to blame the QB... but I'm blaming the QB. Statistically, from time to throw to either missing open receivers to bailing clean pockets... stats objectively show that Baker has been among the league's worst. He's one of the photos on an article about QBs hurting their OL.

That sounds dire... but it's not. We've seen him be way better at the mental part of the game, at negotiating a pocket. He let the specter of Aaron Donald (and another 3-tech on the field, great idea) scare him out of stepping up in the pocket, ran into tackles like four times.

He and the coaches can absolutely watch the film and see that... and fix it. And they've been talking openly about just that.

We need to resign both Robinson and Tretter... and then draft a potential starting RT at 23 or wherever. Teller will be the starting RG and Kush will be the swing IOL.
 
Agreed, Baker is doing our OL no favors. Disagreed that we have some all world OL. It's pedestrian at best. Baker has gone back to old bad college habits that he can't get away with in the NFL. He doesn't have endless amounts of time to throw the ball without being bothered anymore. Defense aren't going to let him bail out to the right and rifle bullets to the sideline. It's done.

He needs to adjust.
 
I'm confused on the OL love because it seems to be based largely on PFF grades but PFF ranks the Browns as having the 22nd best OL after week 3.

We know that Bitonio and Tretter are killing it, but Fall Out Boy didn't sing 2/5 ain't bad. 2/5 is bad. And we're the only team in the bottom half of the league who have anyone on the OL with a high PFF grade: So I can only imagine just how boosted we are from having two of them.

I'll agree with Gabe but go a step further - 3/5 of our OL fucking sucks and needs to do better because it ain't going to be Mayfield first in line to be replaced. Those dudes won't be retained if they don't shape up.
 
I'm not saying it's an all-world line. I'm saying it's just fine when they all play, and that's more or less where a lot of teams are who know they'll be paying their quarterback a billion dollars.

We have good players on the OL and a very good coach. We can field a solid five in Robinson, Bitonio, Tretter, Kush or Teller, and Hubbard. When they're on the field together, they're good enough that we don't really need to talk about them. Robinson hasn't been bad for about 20 games of his career now and he will be getting paid.

I expect us to invest high next draft, likely the first pick, but I don't envision overhaul at all. Tretter right now is the NFL's top center, Bitonio is a Pro Bowl guard, and Robinson has become a legit starting LT. We traded two picks for Teller and I expect he'll be starting next season. That leaves one possible opening (RT) that I expect us to fill at a high level.

But if healthy? Hubbard showed over the last 8 games last year that he can be a solid starter there. I doubt he became bad over the break. We just need to keep our starting OL on the field and get Baker-Kitchens-Monken on the same page, get the ball out.
