I'm trying to broaden my horizons with horror movies. I struggle sometimes with suspending my disbelief. Horror movies require a greater suspension of disbelief than any other genre at times. The last couple I watched were Rings (legitimately awful), A Quiet Place (good, but some head-scratchingly dumb moments) and Get Out (a real mind fuck). I tend to watch mostly comedies, thrillers/dramas/etc (like cop movies). A good story idea > a specific genre any day. I really want to see Upgrade, which was considered one of 2018's best Horror films by Rotten Tomatoes.
Horror is a tough genre for many reasons. Sometimes people just don't want to see the blood and gore and others just think that the entire genre feels unnecessary and sick.
I'm on the opposite extreme where I'll watch pretty much anything, although as I've gotten a bit older, I'm finding it much more difficult to watch the extreme stuff. There are some movies that I will absolutely never watch like any of the Human Centipede type garbage, but overall I'll give just about anything a chance.
But I do think there is a quality horror movie for just about anyone out there that's willing to give it a chance. The gripe I always get from people that aren't into horror is the gore, but there are plenty of movies in the genre that keep the blood to a minimum and focus on more psychological or paranormal terror, among other things.
ChuckBrown, Christine is a classic and a lot of fun. Read the book if you get a chance.
hammertime, I've got a buddy who loves horror as much as me and we watch Cube at least once a year.
Here are some of my unsolicited horror recommendations. I'll try to sprinkle in a little of everything.
I Saw the Devil - A Korean story about a detective who seeks revenge on his wife's killer. The movie is very quick for a two hour film and will need to be watched with subtitles. This is actually one of my favorite all time movies. If you love clever revenge horror and you can handle quite a bit of blood/gore and some overall sick stuff (at one point the villain seeks shelter with an old friend who happens to be a cannibal), then this movie is up your alley.
The Witch - An A24 Productions film, The Witch is a very slow, very dimly lit movie set in the 1600's New England. This one is a tension builder that requires patience and appreciation to detail. The gore overall isn't too bad at all.
The Green Room - Another A24 Production featuring Patrick Stewart as a neo-Nazi leader. Do you really need anymore? Anton Yelchin stars as a leader in a young metal band looking for any gigs they can find when they witness a murder at the venue they just performed at. The neo-Nazi group traps them inside and the band has to fight there way out. There are a few gruesome scenes, but overall it's just a really well done tension thriller that gets started pretty quickly and has a short run time at 95 minutes.
You're Next - This one's just a fun movie about a family getting hunted by a few masked strangers during a gathering. The family already seems to have their own internal issues and getting attacked by masked men with various weapons only adds to the fun. Gore overall is fairly standard here, nothing over the top.
Hush - I think Hush may be a Netflix Original, but I'm not sure. Hush features a deaf writer who lives out in the woods with few neighbors being attacked at random by a masked man. You get to see a deaf female have to overcome adversity to fight off her attacker and it doesn't let you down. Moderate gore here with a few blood spurting scenes.
Inside (A l'interieur) - The US just came out with their own version which wasn't too bad, but had more of a "happy" ending, at least when compared to the original french version from 2007. If you're not on board with gore, just skip over this one because the house gets splashed in red when a woman in her third trimester is stalked by a woman trying to get into her house on a rainy holiday night.
The Faculty - The 1998 gem featuring Josh Hartnett is a great one for horror movie parties. It's just a fun movie about a high school in a small town getting taken over by aliens. This isn't a "good" movie, just a fun one that anyone can enjoy.
The Sacrament - Directed by Ti West who has done some good things for the horror genre, The Sacrament is essentially a new Jonestown as two brothers go to look for their sister after fearing she's joined a cult.
Hell House LLC - This is a gem my buddy found on Amazon in which a group of friends find an old hotel to renovate into a haunted house for Halloween. As I'm sure you could imagine, the old hotel has some secrets as things aren't what they seem. Not a ton of gore here, just some spine-chilling scares.
To be honest, I could go on and on and on. I love movies in general, but I really love horror.
