Browns Monken's staff

This Schwartz thing will get settled in the next few days. If Schwartz wants out then tell the brass now so we don't waste any time going after another DC. My guess he comes back. He'll get his raise.

He's down to two options.

Fold his arms, breach his contract, and just sit at home.
Make amends, take a bunch more money, and live to fight another day for an HC job.

I don't see how quitting mid-contract and sitting at home helps his future HC chances.

He has an easy story to tell. "Look, I'm driven. I wanted the job. But I've spoken to Todd, and feel he and I can really do something special with this team when we combine our skill sets", etc etc. It's done, and we move forward.

So, we’re day 5 of the Monken era, and there are 7 new coaches for the offense, one less STC (Bubba), and not a peep from the defensive side of the ball.

No known departures.
No known interviews with other teams.

Otter staffs are filling out quicky and landing spots are getting eaten up.

Might be an interesting week.

Is Stern official?

From GiantsWire on him:

He assists with quarterback development in a room led by Lamar Jackson, helps craft playbooks and call sheets, conducts opponent analysis and self-scouting, and advised former head coach John Harbaugh on in-game clock management, challenges, situational football, rules, and officiating.

A Yale graduate (magna cum laude, cognitive science, 2016). A Baltimore native.

There aren't many options being Raheem Morris has taken the niners gig..

I hope Swartz can rein in his ego and come back. It’s tough being humbled at this level. Sure, he will have offers and opportunities… but none of them will have a defensive roster to tool with like ours. It would be a HUGE win to get him back. Can he and Monken co-exist? Or do we hire our LB coach as DC.. Jason Tarver … he has dc experience with the Raiders previously.. the logical hire if Schwartz does not return and keep continuity

My guess is Schwartz leaves.. But Monken said they will continue to employ his system.. That spells Jason Tarver getting promoted to maintain continuity...

1 week ago today, we found out about Monken ... and still no word about the defensive side of the ball, other than he's keeping the same defensive scheme.

I will say, I've yet to see another team hire an OC/play-caller I'm jealous of. Maybe equally valued, but not better than Monken, especially considering his last 5 years of production.
  • New York Jets: Frank Reich (former Colts/Panthers head coach; hired February 4, 2026, to serve as OC and play-caller under new HC Aaron Glenn).
  • New York Giants: Matt Nagy (former Chiefs OC; hired recently in early February 2026 under new HC John Harbaugh).
  • Baltimore Ravens: Declan Doyle (former Bears OC; hired in early February 2026, with play-calling duties).
  • Atlanta Falcons: Tommy Rees (former Browns OC; hired to reunite with new HC Kevin Stefanski).
  • Cleveland Browns: Travis Switzer (former Ravens run game coordinator; hired after Todd Monken left for HC role).
  • Buffalo Bills: Pete Carmichael Jr. (promotion/internal hire under new HC Joe Brady).
  • Miami Dolphins: Bobby Slowik (internal promotion from senior passing game coordinator).
  • Denver Broncos: Davis Webb (promotion from passing game coordinator).
  • Kansas City Chiefs: Eric Bieniemy (return to the role after previous stint).
  • Los Angeles Chargers: Mike McDaniel (former Dolphins HC; hired as OC).

I mean geez. . . I'm not sure how anyone can complain about how this ended up. Monken, to me, is a best case scenario. I like this hire more than I would have Harbaugh. If we can keep Schwartz, it's a big upgrade over Stefanski, and I had my doubts we could get a better coach than Kev to take the job. Another solid job by Berry - who looks better and better to me.

As an OC, I would take Monken over every one of these guys. I wouldn't even think twice.

Running total:
  • Monken (Offensive Head Coach)
  • Switzer (Offensive Coordinator)
  • Warhop (Offensive Line Coach)
  • Breyer (Pass Game Coordinator)
  • Ian Kolste (Offensive Analyst)
  • Daniel Stern (interview associate HC)
  • Jeff Blasko (TE coach)
  • Mike Bajakian (Quarterbacks coach)
  • John Carr (Chief of Staff)

It sucks but it's probably for the best. Monken will have all his guys, and he can move off the FO's recommendation. A clean break for the new coaching staff short of whoever Monken might like to keep.

Schwartz…

Got beat out for HC
By a guy who has frankly earned his shot
Decided to quit despite being under contract.
That’s a 100% pussy move.
What a little bitch

Doubt he'll ever get a head coaching gig. Unless the Browns get a decent offer I'd make Schwartz sit out for the duration of his contact.

Haven't heard if this departure was congenial or not so....
