Browns The new Rutenberg Defense

Former NFL head coach Marvin Lewis explained why the Browns’ defense is for real, praising its tight coverage, ability to stop the run, and Mike Rutenberg’s decision to build on Jim Schwartz’s system.

“They play man-to-man. And when they don’t play man-to-man, they play man-matchup zones, and they make it tight windows to throw. And they make the quarterback earn everything. Right now they sit with eight men in the box, and they can stop that damn run, and they make the quarterback beat them. It's really impressive. The other thing Mike Rutenberg did, who took over as coordinator, he didn't change the wheel. He kept things moving forward from Coach Jim Schwartz, who obviously did a hell of a job in Cleveland. He didn't reinvent it like we saw some people maybe do in the city of Los Angeles."
