Browns - Andrew Berry's first 5 drafts |

Browns Andrew Berry's first 5 drafts

OconRecon

If you're juiceless, you're useless
The misses are easy, and we all probably have our pet-misses, like Anthony Schwartz. Oh, and draft capital we gave up for #4.

NFL draft success %'s per round are:

1st 55%
2nd 35%
3rd 18%
4th 9%
5th 6%
6th 3%
7th 1.5%

The "hits" or at least draft worthy, to me, ended up...

2020:
Tier 1 Delpit
Tier 2 Elliott, Bryant, Harris, and DPJ

2021:
Tier 1 Newsome and JOK

2022:
Tier 1 MJE, Wright, and Ford. Also, Amari Cooper for a 5th rounder
Tier 2 Thomas

2023:
Tier 1 Jones, McGuire. Also, ZDS for a two 5th rounders
Tier 2 Mitchell and Wypler

2024:
Tier 1 Hall. Also, Jerry Jeudy for a 5th and a 6th
Tier 2 Zinter and Briggs

I’m not sure I understand exactly what Tier 1 or Tier 2 means in the context of the original post. I don’t think it’s as simple as breaking things down into rigid tiers. Instead, I think of players as starters, contributors, busts, etc.

As a GM in the NFL, you absolutely have to hit on your first-round picks. There’s no way around it. You need to hit on your second-rounders most of the time and go about 50/50 on third-round picks. That’s what the best teams do. After that, it becomes a major crapshoot.

My assessment of Berry’s 1st & 2nd round picks:

2020 NFL Draft

1.10 - OT, Jedrick Wills

This was a loaded OT draft. Andrew Thomas went #4 to the Giants, so no need to compare there—he turned into a franchise left tackle. Mekhi Becton showed flashes as a rookie but got hurt in Year 2 and was never the same. Wills was the third OT selected in this class. He had moments but was very inconsistent and dealt with injuries throughout his tenure. Meanwhile, Tristan Wirfs, taken right after him, became an immediate star and a First-Team All-Pro.

Verdict: Bust. Wills never lived up to the expectations of a top-10 pick, while Wirfs became an elite player. A first-round OT should be a decade-long solution, and Wills wasn’t that.

2.44 - S, Grant Delpit
Delpit was projected to go higher but fell to the second round. Berry loves value picks, and this was one he couldn’t pass up. He missed his entire rookie season due to an Achilles injury but rebounded to become a reliable starter in the secondary. He isn’t an elite safety, but he contributes and plays at a solid level.

Verdict: Good pick. Not a star, but a dependable contributor.

2021 NFL Draft

1.26 - CB, Greg Newsome

Started out as an outside corner before eventually moving into the slot. Didn’t record his first career interception until Year 3, which was also his best season under Jim Schwartz.

Verdict: Solid player, but not elite. You’d hope for a little more from a first-rounder, but he’s been a good—not great—contributor. The issue here is Tyson Campbell was available and has been a cornerstone for Jacksonville.

2.52 - LB, Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah (JOK)
This was widely considered a steal at the time. Berry saw another value drop and went after it. JOK was turning into an elite-level linebacker before his recent injury, which now puts his career in jeopardy.

Verdict: Great pick. Outperformed his draft position, and before the injury, he was playing at a Pro Bowl-caliber level.

2022 & 2023 NFL Drafts
No 1st or 2nd round picks due to the Deshaun Watson trade.

2024 NFL Draft
No 1st round pick

2nd Round - DT, Siaki Ika

Too early to tell, but he didn’t contribute much as a rookie. The Browns let Dalvin Tomlinson walk this offseason, so it’s clear they believe in their young DT group of Ika and Maurice Hall.

Verdict: TBD. Needs to show something in Year 2.

Overall Verdict

Berry has not done well in the first round.
• Wills was a bust, and he passed on Wirfs, who became an All-Pro tackle.
• Newsome has been solid, but Tyson Campbell was right there and has turned into a cornerstone piece for the Jags.

Berry has shined in Round 2, where he finds value picks on players who drop. Delpit and JOK were both good selections.

All that said, I don’t have much faith that Berry will make the right decision with pick #2 in this year’s draft. Quarterback is the only logical pick, but even when Berry gets the position right, he has a history of picking the wrong player. I expect the wrong move like a DE or WR or trade down instead of the proper move, QB (Ward or Sanders) at 2.

I just want to see what Berry does with A) a real QB and B) annual first round picks.

He's had two first rounders, and hit on one of them. That's 50%. That's right where the rest of the league tends to be.

He's young, and learning. Doesn't give him an infinite leash, but Stefanski and Berry and the only combo since the 1990's to go to the playoffs twice. They've earned a continued chance, for another year, at least.

If Ab does "the smartest guy in the room" BS that means we will not get a QB with the 2nd pick of the draft. If that happens and he is still the GM it means Jimmy was the guy who wanted Watson.
It's almost guaranteed at this point that is the case, but not getting a QB at 2 all but solidifies that theory.

Browns week 1 PFF rookie grade rankings*:
  • #1 @ DL - Graham (1st Rd)
  • #1 @ LB - Schwesinger (2nd Rd)
  • #2 @ RB - Sampson (4th Rd)
  • #3 @ TE - Fannon Jr (3rd Rd) and set a rookie record for game one receptions

Would have been hard to believe, pre-draft, this list would include "Two QB's, DNP" lol.

*Minimum 20% of available snaps

This is a damning list of offensive players.
No denying it.
A couple of serviceable players at best

Anthony Schwartz
David Bell
Jed Wills
Elijah Moore
Austin Hooper
Deshaun
Isaiah Bond
Ced Tillman
Jerome Ford
Dillon
DTR
Zak Zinter
Jamari Thrash
Harry Bryant

He has built a defense, even if all he did is listen to Schwartz, and he has a punter and found a kicker.
But damn, his skill position acquisitions have been horrible.

I mean, Cinci is entertaining with 3 damn guys. Burrow, Higgins, and Chase.

Schwartz build a Defense in spite of Berry.

He has found a punter and a kicker. Two of the easiest positions on earth to fill.

On Offense, it has been atrocious. Zero debating it. He hasn't hit on an elite level offensive player one time. Judkins will be the closest to that, a RB.

He has whiffed repeatedly at the QB position, both in FA and the draft. In six years he hasn't even been able to successfully find a freaking Journeyman placeholder. The closest was Flacco, both of which times Berry got his White ass off the Team as quickly as possible.

If we are being honest, his defensive picks have also been lackluster. Not a single game changer or elite level player on D. Our D is great because of Garrett and Schwartz Defensive schemes.

Let's also not leave out he traded away four years of premium draft capitol for a 4-12 scrub of a QB with over two dozen sexual assault under his belt, brought in a career 3rd stringer with two sexual assault under his belt and last year drafted Bond, a WR who also has a sexual assault under his belt. That shit is vile and disgusting.

What makes all of this even worse is he inherited a Playoff roster built by John Dorsey and has proceeded to run it into the ground and convert it back into a 3 win team.

It is mind boggling that Andrew Shabbaz Al-Berry is not only keeping his job, but the HC who had to try and make it work with Berry's garbage ass drafts was sent packing before Berry. Absolutely mind blowing.

So, thought I'd look up Berry's OL selections and his WR selections thus far ... two of his biggest weaknesses.

Offensive line:

Missed on:
Wills, Hudson, Deaton, and Zinter
Hit on: Fano (yeah, I'm calling it)
TBD: Jones, Wyp, Barber, and Brailsford.

Notes: Frankly, not as bad as I thought. BTW, all the evals on Wills, including Joe Thomas, was he was going to be the real-deal. It wasn't a Justin Gilbert or Manziel WTF-pick. Jones and Wyp are a tough call, as they've been injured. I'm meh on Brailsford, but am high on Barber.

Wide Receiver:

Missed on:
Schwartz, Bell, Woods, and Thrash
Hit on: DPJ, KC, and Boston
TBD: Tillman

Notes: For a 7th round pick, DPJ was a hit. For 2026, it just feels like he went 2-for-2 on WR's this draft. He has tried, in free agency and trades, with Moore and Jeudy. Have to say, we all loved the DPJ, KC, and Boston picks the moment they were drafted. Schwartz was the WTF pick ... a total brainfart. Bell, Woods, and Thrash were all Saturday fliers.

Thoughts?

I'd say not bad at all. After day 2 usually all the picks are fliers on guys that can do one thing really well. Like Schwartz. He can run but that's it.

Or an injured guy like Zinter who played very well until he was badly injured.
