Browns Game Thread CLEvsCHI - preseason game 1

No Way Wow GIF

Watson -

Played like a veteran Gabriel tbh, super safe
Pocket nervousness
No pass over 10 air yards
Not much pocket awareness
Completed most of his passes
Sack/fumble lost
Didn't go through progressions much
Tucked and ran pretty quickly
2 presnap penalties, well, one was saved by a timeout
Had the advantage of KC and Boston

Sanders -

Fumbled exchange with 4th string center
He hits the open post, we're talking TD vs INT
Keenum, who looked like a vet should, ate up a lot of the 3Q.
Calmer in the pocket than Watson
Good signs of continued growth i.e. not bailing out of the pocket
No pre-snap penalties
Pocket manipulation good
Progressions, good
Will be interesting to see how he does with the 1's.

I think the decision is made though. It's going to be Watson for week one in Florida.

Monken will say something like "it's super close, so we'll go with the experienced guy, and continue to bring Shedeur along, because he's really close to where I want him to be".

Seemed like Watson.. much like his history with the Browns seemed to hold the ball wayyyyyyy tooooo looooong.. Other than the bad INT for Shedeur, I felt he moved the ball better.. Shedeur was not afraid to go downfield unlike Watson who just seemed to want to throw safe 5 yard passes. .. On Shedder's first drive.. in a real game the play calling would not have gone that way and we likely get a td or FG. and could probably say the same for some Watson series.. ..but obviously the coach will want to practice 4th and short if it's at all possible when it's pre-season. The OL run blocking was poor.. pass protection a smidge better....but what do you expect with 5 new starters.. It's going to be ugly at first. I expect that. I've said it a hundred times.. of all the units on the field.. the OL must play as a unit... you need to know what the guys next to you are going to do.. that takes time.. So it's going to be a work in progress.. Sadly the toughest part of the schedule is early.. I would expect it to take the first 4-5 games before things start to jell... hopefully jell.. it's good they are getting the starters out there in pre-season.. and likely again next week since we hav this QB competition.

Quick observations prior to watching it back.

Good:
- Watson made quick decisions and was efficient
- Sanders made some plays down field
- Young WR's can play
- 1st team D should be fine
- Fano can play

Bad:
- Watson did not push the ball down field. To be fair, OL was terrible and he had no time
- Sanders wasn't good operationally and made some bad decisions
- Lil Gabe stinks
- WR's didn't get much separation downfield (hence no deep balls by Watson)
- OL was terrible in every aspect. No push in the run game. Terrible on short yardage. Couldn't pass protect
- Defensive depth is non-existent. Really, really bad.

Yes Lil Gabe needs to be peddaled elsewhere...
