Browns - Drew Allar, QB | Barking Hard

Browns Drew Allar, QB

OconRecon

If you're juiceless, you're useless
If he flames out vs the Irish and it's clear he's returning to college, then this might be a short lived thread. But for now, here are his pro's and con's going into the 2024 season. He's already improved on one weakness, which is completing 68% his passes this year. As a Browns and Irish fan, I'm pretty ambivalent about the upcoming game.

Drew Allar Player Evaluation, August 2024

Allar’s Strengths
  • Huge frame listed at 6’5 “, 243 pounds with good muscle and thickness to handle NFL punishment.
  • Arguably the most muscular arm in the country.
  • His big-time arm talent enables him to push and hit all three levels quickly.
  • Has a a quick, flexible release and can get the football out in a hurry and off different platforms.
  • Has the pressure of being a program savior experienced at Penn State?
  • Good pre-snap experience and control of the offense. He was allowed to read defenses and adjust protections at the line.
  • Good anticipation for a young Quarterback on timing routes. Got the ball out on time.
  • Shows off his arm on the run, making tough throws while on the move.
  • One of the best at deciphering against zone coverage in the class.
  • Has pocket presence, knows when to step up, and allows routes to develop.
  • Has the athleticism to extend plays and evade the pass rush.
  • Impressive at keeping the ball out of harm’s way. First-year starter with only two interceptions

Allar’s Weakness
  • Has young QB flaws with Inconsistent footwork.
  • His feet can get too loose, which causes issues with his base. This leads to accuracy issues.
  • He completed only 59% of his passes. It’s low for a top 3 pick at quarterback.
  • He is often looking for a big play to make up for the lack of explosiveness in Penn State’s offense.
  • He passes up easy throws to open receivers early in his progressions too often.
  • Versus better competition, field vision was cloudy. Eye discipline was poor. Led to telegraphing his passes.
  • Loves to show off his big arm too much sometimes. Need to work on Touch passes.

It's like Josh Allen groundhog day. I remember people saying he couldn't hit the broadside of a barn, although I think Allen used his legs more.

I bet if we hired Vrabel he would be looking REAL closely at the Ohio boy.

I'm very comfortable saying a 20 yr-old, who is 6'5" 240 with a cannon, has room to develop and grow.

Dream scenario is Cousins to mentor, Allar as the savior, and still maybe a 6th round long-shot QB as well.

The comparable part of Allen and Allar is the clay, and the need to develop further. The non-comparable part is Allen's feet. That's god-given stuff. But, Allar can run some, just not elite-ly.

Sounds like a Jeff George clone

I would appreciate this scenario, if Cousins comes cheap. I've been thinking he's had a very good opportunity to grow as a mentor this year in Atlanta. From Minnesota big name at 34, to benched for a rookie at 36. If he's got anything left in the tank for football, it's going to be mostly what's in his head of what is valuable. If his arm is gone, then that's one thing, but if he can still hit the short and intermediate stuff and be on time, then that is valuable, and also can provide the roadmap to fixing a rookie's flaws, in this case Allar's cons that you listed.

Is Allar mobile? Haven't seen him much, but I don't see him making plays with his feet. He's no Josh Allen on the ground, that's for sure. Does he have any speed or elusiveness?
He's actually run decently this year. He's no Allen, but he's no Kosar either. Has enough to do the occasional.
I'd say in the Jared Goff / Justin Herbert neighborhood.
Just my 2 cents of course.

I would add that being elusive in the pocket is a better trait than being mobile. Similar skills to be fair. How accurate of a thrower is he, or anybody, when throwing on the run to the left and the right.

We get it. He has poor footwork. That can be fixed.
