Josh Allen and Baker Mayfield: The Browns could be down to these two, sources say

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A day before the draft, it could be down to Josh Allen or Baker Mayfield at No. 1 overall for the Browns, league sources tell cleveland.com.

The Browns have given strong consideration to all of the four top quarterbacks in the draft -- Allen, Mayfield, Sam Darnold and Josh Rosen -- but the choices seem to be narrowing to the cannon-armed passer from Wyoming and the Heisman Trophy winner from Oklahoma, the sources say.

Many experts still believe the Browns will draft Sam Darnold Thursday night, but sources say the Browns have cooled on the USC passer in recent days and that Allen and Mayfield have surpassed him.

92.3 The Fan's Dustin Fox, who's part of the Browns' in-house broadcast team, also reported last Friday he was told it was down to Allen and Mayfield, and Dan Patrick reported on Monday that an NFL scout told him the same thing.

One well-connected top-level NFL personnel executive has been insisting to cleveland.com since the Senior Bowl in January that Dorsey will take Allen. "You can take it to the bank,'' he said again this week.

But there's been a growing buzz in recent days that the Browns love Mayfield, despite his 6-0 height and maturity issues...

MKC will not give up the totally embarrassing crush on Josh Allen. It's kind of gross.

However, the one consistent "down to two QB's" name we keep hearing is Baker.

She could know it's Baker, and be throwing in Allen as a saving face measure.

#Browns GM John Dorsey told @wyche89 the team has had no legit trade offers for No. 1. That figures to hold, which means Cleveland is on the clock.

So the trade out of #1 is not likely...but this seems very relevant...

Observations about the Browns pick: 1. Only Dorsey *knows* who they'll pick at 1 2. That decision has been made 3. Info to the contrary is disinformation 4. His people aren't telling media his plan; they don't know 5. Hue, who will be coaching for his job, is out of the loop

I have said it before, the only one who knows is Dorsey...and he likely has a meeting with Haslam sometime tomorrow to finalize. No way this info is leaking. Which then totally debunks MKC with her 'recent changes' to the draft board BS.

I truly believe this decision was made, and maybe even finalized pending some huge trade offer, up to 2 weeks ago. All the chatter about QB's rising on the Browns board is based on Agents and maybe even other teams dropping rumors. The Browns have ZERO to gain from leeking anything.

With that said, I have no clue...so I am at this point trying to see the reasoning behind each QB.

Darnold: Mobile, accurate, uncanny ability to complete off base. Young with tons of room to grow. Definitely needs to sit at least a year.

Rosen: Pure pocket passer. Extremely nice ball and motion. About as NFL ready as any of the QB's in this draft. Can fit almost any offensive scheme (except RPO based).

Mayfield: Movile, most accurate, fiery, motivator, chip on the shoulder type refusal to lose. Could be ready to start immediately if RPO/play action are used.

Allen: Huge arm, very young, highest upside. If over-stepping was really the biggest accuracy issue, he can be fixed relatively easily. Needs to sit a MINIMUM of 1 year, preferably 2.

Well said. Apparently only Dorsey knows and is open for a trade.
Anyone who "has info per a source" is either fooled or lying.

Allen ,,, highest upside

True, that's what's being said, but darn near every team has back-up QB who is protypically sized with all the tools. The NFL is littered with them. And most had the same thing said about them pre-draft.

Just get the QB who plays the best, the WR who catches the best, the RB with the best vision, the OL who can block the best.

Trust the film and forget everything else.

The more I think of it, the more the bolded part stands out. This wasn't a "we are going to pick at #1" statement....this was a "Sorry guys, step it up or no trade" statement. This was Dorsey putting it out there that he has had more than 1 trade offer...but nobody is blowing his socks off...and if you want (player x) you better bring it.

This is the final hours, and Dorsey is still drumming up business.

LOVE IT!!!

...and to feed off of that:

#Browns GM John Dorsey to me within the hour on if they've settled on the #1 pick: "We've had really good discussions & that starts with the personnel staff...the coaching staff, the head coach & ownership. I think we are in alignment. Everybody understands what's going on here."

So all this "movement" stuff is just a bunch of BS.

Also, notice Dorsey states "I think we are in alignment", not we all "agree". He further states something interesting to me "Everybody understands what's going on here." Not exactly sure what he is referring to...just the pick, or the philosophy of the draft, or maybe something larger...like I am in control and if you can't win with what I provide you may need to start packing???

Probably that they are taking a guy that Dorsey feels needs to sit for a year. And that Hue is not to Kizer him if he wants a chance at sticking around. Hence the Tyrod deal.

Interesting tweet by Silver (Hue's friend):

Michael Silver (@MikeSilver)

Last year Hue Jackson (who desperately wanted Myles Garrett) WAS kept out of the loop—by then-GM Sashi Brown. He found out who Browns were taking 1 overall the morning of the draft. This year with John Dorsey has been a different story. He’s in the loop. All good.

So now he is trying to imply that Hue 'knows' the pick? After Dorsey just said his own 'wife' doesn't know? Hue is in the loop as in he was in on the discussions. He may even learn of the decision today or tomorrow...but Silver is spinning.

True, but most of them don't have Allen's arm. And most of said backups are behind established or favored starters, or a little long in the tooth. Dorsey's QB plan would seem to favor Allen especially, although it is also ideal for most any quarterback in the draft including Darnold, Rosen and Mayfield.

Perhaps so. But, if he is spinning, he is spinning the rather obvious fact that Hue feels good about the process this year in contrast to last year. My sense is that Dorsey has spent a great deal of time listening to everyone, especially the coaches, evaluating the needs of the team based on the evidence presented and will make draft choices accordingly. Sashi didn't listen to anybody because he saw himself as an all knowing analytics expert.

I disagree with this. I think the 'perception' of football guy like Hue is that he was not listening. I think he listened to plenty. Hue just didn't like the setup, or the emphasis on analytics.

Funny thing is, after the initial comments by Dorsey, he has made a point of mentioning analytics time and time again as a major componant of the process.

I find it adorable that Hue's agent (and his friend Silver) are the ones coming out saying how the Browns are communicating to Hue. What I find interesting is that they said they have been presented the big board. However, MANY front offices use a 'range' board, meaning they group players into a range where they are all basically equal so they can look at the next 'range' they will draft in to see the best overall scenario. What this means is they may have seen the board and STILL have no definitive knowledge of who will be the QB chosen.

Oh...and isn't it a bit concerning that the only ones talking are directly associated with Hue???

I disagree. I think it 'benefits' Allen especially..as he NEEDS the time the most. In other words, he would receive the greatest benefit from sitting (Rosen/Mayfield the least).

As all would benefit, not sure how it 'favors' anyone.

Well, as you said, "it 'benefits' Allen especially" and in that sense it favors him the most.

Since it benefits him the most, it is a system that increases his likelihood of being drafted by the Browns. I am not sure how else it could be viewed.

I think that there is a difference between Dorsey's version of analytics and Sashi's version and their perception and attitude about it. Sashi was a true believer. Dorsey sees relative value.

No, that is not the corollary. Just because HE gets the most benefit from the club does not mean he is the best/most likely to be chosen. It just means it is a good situation for him personally.

What would benefit the BROWNS the most is to have a guy that CAN sit for a while, but CAN ALSO step in if the need/opportunity arises. Allen actually LIMITS the Browns.

Now...if we were talking what would benefit Allen the most...and a team that would make the most sense...it is the Giants. He has a 'proven' vet with 2-3 years left that he can sit behind and learn...and not be expected to step in after 1 year.

Not familiar with what the agent said, but I have seen the Silver tweet regarding Hue and his coordinators being in the loop and fully informed of the Browns draft plans. According to Silver, Hue, Haley and Gregg, as well as some personnel staffers and ownership, have all seen the final draft board and ownership has signed off on everything.

Sounds like the kind of preparation and coordinated effort that I would expect from a professional organization. The more I hear about the way Dorsey is running things in Berea, the more impressed I become.

You are being obtuse. I didn't say that he was the most likely to be chosen. I merely indicated that since the Dorsey system helps him the most, it increases his chances of his being drafted #1 by the Browns more than the other. And in that sense if favors him.

What would benefit the BROWNS the most is to have a guy that CAN sit for a while, but CAN ALSO step in if the need/opportunity arises. Allen actually LIMITS the Browns.

The Dorsey system eliminates the second need because Stanton is available to step in should such a need arise.

Whether we might or might not draft Allen has nothing to do with the Giants
