Browns Myles Garrett watch - UPDATE - TRADED TO RAMS

Always, except, if you're playing to win now, you don't trade Garrett and you don't worry about extra picks in the next 2 draft classes.

Absolutely incorrect.

If the Browns were truly playing for the future, they would have done what rebuilding teams do: trade an aging star for draft picks. That’s what the Jets did when they traded Sauce Gardner. That’s what teams do when they’re tearing it down and building for the future.

The Browns received back a current Top 10 edge rusher in Jared Verse. You don’t acquire an elite player already performing at a Pro Bowl level if your only focus is 2027 and beyond. You acquire that caliber of player because you still expect to compete and win games now.
And of course there were future picks involved. Myles Garrett is a future Hall of Famer, a perennial All-Pro, and the best defensive player in football. His value was always going to exceed Verse’s value alone... and the Rams weren’t going to send multiple assets from the 2027 draft because the view around the league is that it is an elite draft loaded with talent. Spreading compensation across future drafts is simply what made sense for the Rams... and Berry loves to stack picks in future drafts to always have draft capital to utiltize.
So, it's at least fair to say, they're still trying to win this fall, but also, looking to hit stride for Brook Park.

I guess both can be true.

The reality is the Browns did both: they acquired an elite young player who can help them win immediately and added future assets. That’s not a rebuild. That’s a team trying to remain competitive while also protecting its long-term future.

We're bascially saying the same thing.

If you're only in win-now mode, you don't trade Garrett. You don't care about future picks.
If you're only rebuilding, you trade Ward.
I for one have never said this trade means rebuild.

This trade was a "both", as like life, it's not all black and white, it's mostly gray zones.
We aren't in win-now mode soley. This trade indeed has the next couple of years being strongly considered.
But, getting Verse means there is no reset. It's swapping of edges. Edges don't win championships.

MG wanted out. He made that clear. The compensation for him was difficult because like AB said there's only a few teams capable of making a fair deal for him. That sounds right for the most part and MG went public asking for a trade. That alone changes compensation.

Three 1st round picks sounds about right. We got a first round replacement DE. A very high end younger, cheaper DE. Add a first round pick in next year's draft and a 2nd in the 2028 draft. Okay. Of the limited amount of teams that could do a deal how many teams wanted to get MG? 1 or 2? Really it was only the Rams talking and the Eagles bailed out when AB asked for Jalen Hurts. (Allegedly)

Anyway, overall the deal is as good as could be.

I doubt that Ward is going to be traded as they're looking for a slot CB right now.
Campbell and Ward is damn good combo on the outside too so why complicate that now?

Steelers fans are lamenting, instead of trading Watt, they paid him hansomely, and now he's dropping off at the age of 32.
But, like us, he's just an edge. They'll win if they figure out their QB, and won't if they don't, no matter how Watt does.

Even if Verse just maintains, he's a top-10 edge. That's good enough.

Again

Option 1: 30 yr-old elite edge
or
Option 2: 26 yr-old great edge, plus, an extra 1st rounder, 2nd rounder, and 3rd rounder.

Option 1 makes the most sense for a "super bowl this year" team/Rams.
Option 2 makes most sense for the "hopefully back to the playoffs soon" team/Browns.

this is REALLY about changing our HC. elite vets don't have much tolerance
for franchisees that change the HC. big moves=big consequences.
Its as simple as that.

Yeah, he just didn't want to be here. Got to their OTA's asap.
Siciliano saying Myles' dad is from there. Also, his GF and best friend are in Cali.
There's a Reddit rumor he was possibly going to hold out.
This is all for the best.

He never wanted to be here from the get... He wanted Jerry Jones to trade Dak to the Browns so Jerry could draft him...

Do you think they'll fully guarantee his contract?

By the way I love getting underpaid for generational talent. Maybe we should have sent the Rams our 2030 first as a thank you for trading with us.

No dude I called Miles Per Gallon on the phone and he told me that he left cuz we didn't sign Brett Favre as our new QB

So there it is. I rest my case.

here another case closed.
"& is the clock ticking on #21 now?"
"Oh, 100%"

Well, your record remains intact: zero cases closed.

A disgruntled former head coach saying Myles would’ve stayed if he were still coaching doesn’t mean jack shit. It literally means nothing. You know how we know?

1) Myles wanted out two years ago when Jim Schwartz was already the defensive coordinator. If his relationship with Schwartz was the deciding factor, that trade request never happens.

2) Myles didn’t request a trade this time around. The Browns made a football decision and moved him. Those are two completely different situations.
Those are facts. Not speculation. Not anonymous sources. Not connecting dots that aren’t there.

You keep trying to create a narrative that isn’t supported by the actual timeline and facts. The reality is simple: Myles has been frustrated with the direction of the organization for years, and the Browns ultimately decided to move on for their own reasons. Trying to pin it all on one coach leaving is a massive leap that isn’t backed up by the evidence.

TL;DR summary:

- Berry has a very professional approach to GM-ing, and has the respect of the league to be able to talk big trades without it leaking out. Drove a pretty hard bargain. Tried for three 1sts, but quickly shifted to there has to be a significant player coming back in return.
- Both the Rams and Browns handled informing Verse and Garrett in a very respectable way
- Berry is part of a sort of think tank group of executives across sports that includes St. Louis Cardinals president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom, Oklahoma City Thunder GM Sam Presti and Pittsburgh Penguins GM Kyle Dubas
