How it played out shows they possibly learned their lesson from the Watson fiasco and are being prudent in getting the answer at QB.

It has been no secret I was against the Berry hire and WAYYYYY against hiring Stefanski when it happened. Didn't like nor respect either one. This draft has made me lukewarm to them because of how they did it.

It was smart. Really smart. Unlike when we bit on Johnny Jackass, unlike when we blew 1/4 billion dollars on a serial rapist and unlike when we signed another rapist to be his back up.

No, we looked at the whole picture with the QB position and sat back on it. Stockpile some early picks and go after a candidate next season. In the mean time see about developing a former 1st rounder and a 3rd round rookie behind a Journeyman starter.

It paid off. It may have paid off in a huge way. If Sanders matches the hype? Shit, these guys got him for a can of Pepsi and bag of Dorito's, all while getting in position to draft some high end talent around him next year.

If it plays out in our favor it bodes well for this FO and they're not going anywhere.

Tell me the story about Dillon Gabriel.
 
When Drafting Dillon they didnt know that Sanders would still be a available in round 5.
With only Plinket and a 40yo Flacco, they needed a rookie QB, so the picked one up in Dillon.
Fast Forward to the 5th and the talent of Sanders was still on the board. So why not take a guess on him, too.
Some dumbshits talk with the logic of hindsight of picking up Sanders "why did they pick Dillon, if they were drafting Sanders?!"
Because they didnt know Sanders would be available.

So, if the general opinion out there is Haslam stepped in, and forced the FO to trade-up and select Sanders, does he then get the credit if Sanders pans out?
 
The owner's main job, in a way, is to spend the money. It's the one thing he can control. Haslam does that extremely well.

He's not poor (by NFL owner's standards) like the Bengals and Steelers are.
He's not a mess like Indy and the Patriots have to deal with.
He's not declared himself the GM, like Jerry Jones has.
He's not disconnected or disinterested, like our previous owner.
He saved the Crew, and is going to put billions of his own money into this Brook Park thing.

What hasn't he done? Been lucky enough to stumble upon a QB. It has to happen one day.

I think Haslam has evolved into a good owner. He doesn't flinch at signing the big checks, not one bit.

Gabriel is simple, like I said previously.

They liked, not loved, Sanders. They opted to prep a year ahead of time, then Dillon was sitting there with an extra pick. Someone somewhere in the building liked something about the little fella, it was an extra 3rd round pick, so they took a flier.

Was it a wasted pick? Absolutely and without question, it was a horrible pick.

Sanders freefall changed the trajectory. You need a QB. A 1st round prospect has fallen into the 5th round. You didn't want the circus but maaaaaybe, just maybe, let's throw the rest of our chips in on this one dice roll and see what happens, especially after we nailed it with Schweisinger, Judkins and Fannin.

Trouble is if you FEARED the "circus" it will pop right up when he starts playing Lights out. maybe even bigger than it would've been.

At that point he was a 5th round pick. If he is playing well and the circus arrives you can trade him for more draft picks. If he falters and daddy D starts trying to cause issues, you can trade or cut him. It's a win win.

Yup. Trading a perfectly fine QB is well within the possibilities.
Nothing surprises me anymore. I think it's a form of self-defense mechanism. I have set my expectations so low and I just assume the most asinine decisions to be within the possibilities. That way I can't be disappointed and all joy is met with some reservation. Just because you know they might end up hiring Hue Jackson again. Or draft a punter in the first round.
