Browns The Browns FO, what we've learned this draft

OconRecon

If you're juiceless, you're useless
Or maybe re-learned, or reminded of ....

1. Top-30 visits don't matter
2. Neither do Senior Bowl experiences, virtual visits, combine rumors, etc etc.
3. After the Watson experience, we're scared to death, at this point in time, to take a chance on a QB. Best to risk top picks on a non-skill player. If we didn't like this year's QB's, fine, wait until Saturday. Instead, we did this weird middling QB with a prime draft slot. Plain weird.
4. Jimmy's jet flight tracker is just for smoke. Flew around to the top QB's, had shots at all of them, and pffft. Skipped them all.
5. There is no "reading the tea leaves" with this FO. It's all smoke.
6. There is always going to be one pick that is a total WTF. Call it the annual Anthony Schwartz award. Gabriel, tag, you're it.

And lastly, while we scored 15.2 point per game last year with the worst offense in the league and have no clear QB1, Jim fucking Schwartz ran roughshod over the Ivy Leaguers, and had them draft DEFENSE with our first two picks. LOLOL. Nice job Schwartz. A hat tip to you sir.

Who has the laser eye meme of our DC? Post it.

I love it!!
The annual Anthony Schwartz/SPARQ award.

We'll have to go back in history a few years and get it going properly.

IN 2021 THE FIRST ANNUAL ANTHONY SCHWARTZ/SPARQ AWARD GOES TO:

Anthony Schwartz WR Auburn University 3rd round 91st overall.

What we have learned this draft.....

1: They are drafting scared, starting out the draft with an undersized JAG DT and a high floor Linebacker.

2: Berry and DePudpuller are still utterly clueless about the QB position.

3: They can't even start out mediocre and launch into awesome without quickly fucking up the whole thing.

This team wants to win now... why ? Flacco you don't sign him if tanking for next years draft.

Jimmy didn't say ......don't draft Sanders. like many owners did.

What worries me is ... What did our QB board look like ? 3 or 4 guys rated higher and available than Gabriel when they drafted him.
So what happens in next years draft ? oh no

Will the staff give Sanders a chance ? they didn't want him.

Very confusing

It is simple, and honestly quite smart which leads me to believe Stefanski got a bit more say so in personnel.

We brought back a solid Veteran to keep us involved in games. Win now? Disagree. This draft was pure retool and rebuild. We picked high floor foundational players.

Joe Flacco is here to mentor and train. Things played out fantastic for The Browns with this off-season. We got Flacco back AND we were able to get a former 1st round QB with a lot of potential. Already right there it was a win.

Then the draft happened. Personally I don't buy into the conjecture that Jimmy came running down the stairs, barging into the draft room and demanding the Browns make Shaduer into Dee's latest bull.

Nah. What happened was we started acquiring draft picks and took a 3rd round flier on a prospect to add to our arsenal and kick the tires on. As it happened, a 1st round prospect with skill went into freefall thanks to his mouthy ass father and lapses in judgement.

The Browns jumped up to draft him because it made sense. You need a QB. You have a solid filler Vet and two young prospects. Kick the tires on a low risk prospect in the 5th round and see if he can live up to the 1st round hype.

If it works out you just had a Legendary draft. If not? You lost a 5th rounder and a couple of 6ths and 7ths. Big deal. It was a no brainer at that point.

At this point I would speculate the plan is to tank for the #1 pick UNLESS one of these guys plays lights out and shows they can be THE guy for the next decade plus.

So Joe doesn't start any games ?
because if he does we could win. and winning just 5 or 6 games can put you outside the top 10. that ain't tanking correctly. let alone the #1 pick that's 2 win territory.

The two-round Andrew Berry drafting history:

2020 - Wills (10), Delpit (44)
2021 - Newsome (26), Owusu-Koramoah (52)
2022 - N/A
2023 - N/A
2024 - Hall (54)
2025 - Graham (5), Schwesinger (33), Judkins (36)
2026 - an extra first rounder

So, in the first two rounds, he's gone miss, hit, hit, hit, hit, and there's a decent chance he goes for 2025, hit, hit, hit. And the extra first rounder in 2026 is a hit until proven otherwise (in a way).

Doesn't count MJE, Dawand, etc. Are we 100% sure he sucks at drafting?

We get Flacco again because he can come in if Plinket has to come out and Flacco can still win a game. Maybe.
Anything better than Smith-Johnson last year.
Why cant they draft receivers?

If anyone in the Front Office reads this. Here is free advice about drafting receivers if you are drafting for the Browns:

Find a college receiver you like, scout him like you always do, go the whole rodeo as normal, keep doing what you do and then ... pick SOMEONE ELSE! Anyone but THAT guy!
Because, and this might surprise you to hear, it's because you have NO FUCKING CLUE about drafting receivers.
Get it? Draft someone else.
Easy fix.

The Browns had one of, if not the, best draft in the league. A 1st round pick in '26 to go along with the haul we received. If you don't like that, you never were going to be. I think the main things we learned about the FO and this regime as a whole is that they are safer than you would think and they have been allowed to bring us back. Berry/Stefanski are in charge of the rebuild.

I think Sanders was an ownership pick. I don't think Haslam will interfere often, but for a 5th round pick I'm sure his thinking is why not. Already paying off with Sanders' jersey sales and the interest the Cleveland Browns have received post-draft. I don't think Sanders the football player is a real part of the equation. So take him out. Graham, Schwesinger (JOK), Judkins (Chubb), Fannin (Njoku), Gabriel, & Sampson (Hunt), that's the start of your rebuild. I left Graham and Gabriel blank because we have not yet had a dominant DT and a franchise QB. But the vision is clear.

Lets see how the players perform for a few seasons before crowning anyone.

The outcome does not define the process. If the players all snort coke tomorrow, it doesn't mean that the FO didn't plan or were unaware. The 1st Round Pick pulls a lot of weight. Because even if you don't like that they ended up with 2 Pre-Draft 1st Rounders to go along with that, even if you hate every single player they selected, the deal gives you a chance tomorrow.
