The Offensive Line

Coleman had a really nice game. I think he's gonna be penciled in as the starting RT with Pasztor at RG. Center is the only available spot and the Browns do love Reiter... but could see a C at the top of round 4.

Super good news on Coleman. Looked like a road grader.
Fabiano graded at 47, fyi.
Pasztor finishes the year at 77, Schwartz at 79.

Top offensive grades:

T Joe Thomas, 82.1

T Shon Coleman, 81

G Spencer Drango, 78

TE Gary Barnidge, 76

WR Andrew Hawkins, 67.7

Makeshift offensive line provides running lanes

Cleveland ran for 231 yards on 33 carries on the afternoon, with 134 of those yards coming after contact. A big reason for those running lanes was the offensive line—granted, Isaiah Crowell made the right cuts and showed some burst on a few of his runs. Three of the Browns’ offensive linemen earned run-blocking grades above 80.0, with rookie Shon Coleman leading the team at 84.5. In the air, converted wide receiver Terrelle Pryor surpassed 1,000 yards on the season after being targeted 10 times, catching seven passes for 94 yards.

Excellent. I knew it wasn't just an eye test, he just flat out played extremely well.

I must admit, now I'm a little disappointed. I was 100% in favour of Coleman getting a year to develop, no question, but for him to look so good I'm wishing we got to see a little more of him. I'd have liked for him to come in sooner, particularly with him looking this good. No matter, though, he looked excellent - and he looked physically good, too. He looked a little sluggish in the preseason but he was moving out there, got a few second level blocks and even took that injury while blocking a good 15 yards down field.

With Coleman coming along, Pasztor looking as good as usual at guard, I am very content with that right side. While the left is Thomas and Bitonio, which is no question good. C is my only area of concern, but I wouldn't at all be against Reiter vs young rookie, there are some interesting guys in the middle rounds.

Overall, the outlook is bright on the OL. I'm over the moon with it.

Seems like we're always working around Cam and his seemily guaranteed, yet unearned, starting spot.

JT - JB - JG - AP - SC and be done with it. Cam and Drango can be 6th & 7th. Retain Reiter too. Don't draft a center. Too many other needs.

Lots of injuries this year.... Surprised our coaches couldn't come up with something like this before our last game.......

It was more about easing Shon back after injury then it was about coming up with combo. While it would have been nice to have him at RT earlier, it was about not re-injuring Coleman.

PFF "biggest need" piece on the Browns

Cleveland Browns

Who will be the starting QB in 2017?

This seems to be the question every year, but for good reason—26 different starting quarterbacks since 1999 will do that. 2016 saw a turnstile at the QB position, but seemed much worse than usual in Cleveland, as six different quarterbacks (if you count Terrelle Pryor) took meaningful snaps for the team. Robert Griffin III was placed on IR after the first game, only to return for the final four games. Josh McCown was forced to miss several weeks due to a broken clavicle. And rookie Cody Kessler missed games due to multiple concussions.

While this sounds like a terrible situation on the offensive line, the quarterbacks were heavily to blame for much of their sacks and hits, as four of the six Browns’ QBs ranked in the top six in longest time to throw, with McCown being the fastest at an average of 2.78 seconds per throw (13th longest in the NFL). Griffin (47.8) only got five starts, and while he showed improvement, was it enough to warrant another season for a career revival? McCown (45.5) looks like a veteran hanging on to loose thread, but Kessler (74.2) showed some promise for a viable QB in the NFL.

Kessler lacks NFL-caliber arm strength, but that can improve with growth and an NFL offseason. Kessler’s accuracy was extremely impressive, ranking fourth in adjusted completion percentage, at 78.2, first in adjusted completion percentage under pressure, at 79.4, and sixth in passer rating under pressure, at 82.4. Performing well under pressure is vital for success in the NFL. The Browns’ staff needs to figure out if Kessler can be the long-term answer, or whether they should go after New England’s Jimmy Garoppolo via trade—or take a shot in the draft.

The Browns have a lot of OLinemen on their PS. They are definitely wringing out any talent they can find on the OLine.

Which means they are looking for a QB or a WR1 at the top of the draft. Most likely.

    Tytus Howard

Browns acquired RT Tytus Howard from the Texans in exchange for a fifth-round pick.
This is the first big move the Browns have made to address their offensive line. The acquisition of Howard gives them an experienced right tackle who has started all 16 games he has appeared in for each of the last two seasons, and he has allowed just five sacks on 1,175 pass blocking snaps per TruMedia. Shortly after trading for Howard, the Browns announced they would be signing him to a three-year, $63 million extension, keeping him with the team through the 2029 season.
