The Offensive Line

BDU nailed it. WTF are we even having this conversation about a first round interior OL selection? He should be like Mack and just bolt on and be great. Hell, even Jeff Faine. "Let's be patient"? That's fucked up; truly.

Because a few people try to spin anything Browns related into something great even when it is apparent it isnt, such as the fact Scam Erving is fucking garbage.

Again...keep in mind what was done to him last year. I am sure learning two schemes in five positions has muddled it up a bit. He hasn't played C in over a year...and every C needs some time out of college to assimilate. He is/will do just fine IMHO.

I really think we are just now seeing how detrimental the coaching was over the past two years...especially on the OL/DL.

Also, he was not a career O lineman like Mack.

But there is some truth to the first round thought. If you're good enough to be taken in the first round, you should be plug-and-play.

If you're more of a project with potential, then you should be drafted later.

He did win first team honors in the ACC at center and LT though, so maybe accolades like that caused us to overdraft him.

This is a big game for him. He needs to be average at worst.

Eh I'm underwhelmed regardless of circumstance. We took a flier on a guy who had played C like what, one year in college? Came to the pros, had to learn the entire OL, didn't look comfortable, etc, etc. It doesn't matter. I've yet to see what made him intriguing as a first round selection.

He had first round grades by just about everyone (in fact didn't hear 2nd round at all). But that was as C or potential LT...not G. Ocon, you are right, he has played OL only 2 years in college...most at LT.

As for why to draft him...he is a replacement for Mack, and some even saw him as a long term project for LT. Not a bad 'flier'.

I'm more perplexed than underwhelmed. The surprise when taking him in the first was that we had Mack at center already, not that Erving was drafting in the first. It's odd that a player who was widely regarded as a first round talent at a fairly plug-and-play position with several all-star vets on the line to learn from has been so bad to date.

I'm quite frankly sick of the "he was asked to learn too much" line. Cam Erving has yet to prove he can straight up, fundamentally block an NFL defender at a high level. Forget the mind boggling concerns about him missing assignments. Go back and watch the tape last year and you'll find plenty of straight forward assignments (e.g., "see guy; block guy") plays where he was just bulldozed.

I harp on this because I absolutely fucking hated the pick the moment it was made. I could have cared less about a hedge against Mack leaving; winning franchises do not burn a teens first round picks as either a) a hedge against the aforementioned Mack situation or b) when they already have several first and second rounders invested in their OL.

Cam's struggles to prove he's even a competent player just makes it an even more bitter pill.

He comes around and starts playing above average football; I'll tone down. However, I won't stomach any excuse making. Bottom line is this kid shouldn't be someone we're talking about other than every now and then to say "Man, nice that Erving has stepped in seamlessly".

Yuck.

Hope you get well soon. ;)

Gotta agree with Grey. He's a center, high first round, lots of hype. Shoulda been plug and play. Christ, OL should be the easiest place to put players (echos of Ghoulie), and we seem to keep missing.

And here I was getting ready to come here to our forum and see what everyone thought about Cam's improved performance.

Welp...

Cam is a total knob head...

I watched the game...and despite that gaff on the snap, he had MULTIPLE second level type blocks. He was VASTLY better than he is getting credit for last night. Watch the tape. He did a great job blocking last night.
