The Offensive Line

I've said it many times on here, but Baker's NFL LT, Greg Robinson, and Baker's OU LT, Zues Jr., are the same player.

They don't get bullrushed, they occasionally get end-around-ed, and so Baker is very comfortable stepping up in the pocket, then moving laterally if needed. Especially with our stellar interior 3 holding the fort.

It's no wonder Baker was instantly comfortable, and great observation. He's comfortable climbing the pocket and gets rid of the ball fast, making the long arcing route to him pretty useless. Mountain Man LTs make sense.
 
I have to say that as the season wore on, the OL just got better and better. It started out worrisome, especially the games prior to Hue's departure. I thought we were really going to miss JT and well you know what, they played very well. Wasn't Baker like, the least hit QB in the latter half of the season?

I agree.. but will acknowledge Bakers release and quick reads are a big reason...
 
Got to give credit to an already solid interior OL, replacing Desmond Harrison with a resurrected Greg Robinson, Kitchens' and Mayfield picking plays that Mayfield was comfortable with and put him a position to see the field better and make reads quicker, and of course Baker's ability to make quick reads his quick release.
 
I partially agree with you ‘56. I feel like they finally have the right balance of analytics and football/scouting expertise. Depot and Berry merged with the Green Bay trifecta (Dorsey/Wolf/Highsmith) has us near the top of FO across the league. Add that to an appropriate chain of command (head coach reports to GM) and a coaching staff that will tailor their scheme to their personnel and we are moving in the right direction.

The defense is where I currently feel like we are underperforming. The turnovers were nice but when they stopped we were gashed and the offense kept us in games. If they can make the coaching changes necessary to fix that, look out next year.
 
I love Bob, but he’d been NFL unemployed for decades, and it’s Freddie’s scheme, Baker’s low TTT, and the interior 3 veteran-ness which was the key.

Lots of talk about hiring college OL coaches, could be the next big thing. Offensive innovation mostly happening at college level. Would be a really smart move.

Drafting Tytus Howard in 4 or with the second 3 is a great idea at OT. Have Howard, Corbett, and Harrison in a serious development program if line remains the same, which it should. Smart team building. Makes me think of former 4th round pick Bakhtari.
 
Except that Corbett is a Guard/Center.

Dieken said that Corbett will likely take over at Center if Tretter can't do it anymore. Tretter felt that same pressure as he played hurt most all of the year and he wasn't playing hurt because of Harrison, G Rob and Hubbard.

Corbett has center potential... but he also has RT potential. Played some late in the year including around the goal line. He definitely has some positional flexibility, which is good.

Corbett, Howard, and Harrison would be a terrific bench with serious upside. Harrison's natural gifts could show up pretty fast after a year of decent coaching.

UPDATE: Impending free agent Trent Brown is destroying people. Hmm.

MASSIVE upgrades for specials and OL, the latter being one of the most important positions for a young, offensive minded coach. So good to get fresh (and elite) eyes on our personnel as we decide whether to stand pat with the five starters or make a move.

Really, the only true "upgrade" available to us is probably Trent Brown. Nobody we draft at 17 or 49 is gonna step in and be better, or as good, as what we got from Greg Robinson. And it's not like we can't expect him to keep improving with a great coach... and Joe Thomas.
 
Many are concerned about the Austin Corbett pick, but Bob Wiley felt good about him.

But how about that hot garbage pick of the Bengals? 21st overall man. Billy Price. Ouch.
