LOVE reading that article, supports the stuff we read about The Packer Way on the OL, and now we have a Packers OL coach. It's more about the unit than a "star," and having the best (ANY ONE THING) is not really so great.

It's about being at the median or above across the line and keeping those guys together, building continuity, working as a unit. So few Joe Thomas types seem to play in the Super Bowl. In the end, it's once again about how you manage cap, how you spread it around.

And "spread it around" seems to be the key term on the OL.
 
Another example - with the right QB, HC, and system, Cam Erving, who is ranked as one of the worst guards in the league (75th out of 77), does fine.

In fact, KC fans kind of like him, because his inadequacies stay somewhat buried with Mahomes, Hunt, Hill, and Andy Reid etc etc.

But, throw BigIrv in with Hue and JFF? Well, different story. He'd still be bad, and there'd be no covering it up.
 
So true. I've read a lot about being "good enough" at certain positions, meaning the ones that aren't QB, #1 WR, edge rusher, and #1 corner primarily. And head coach.

It's the reality of the salary cap and understanding how positional groups work, arranging your dollars the right way. One of the insider-ey things about Dorsey way back said he was unlikely to hear that the Browns had the most expensive set of guards in the NFL and think that's a good thing... and then he drafted a guard.

Don't be too shocked if we never see another RB on a second deal. More likely to franchise (like the Steelers) to get one or two extra seasons.

Starting to suspect that the Browns did some restructuring (rumored) to tee up something pretty big. Is it Peterson? Or a little lower, like Zach Brown?
 
The small school kid after a full offseason in the program, always a big change! That's fantastic to hear. He has legit gifts and athleticism, reportedly an epic kick, could be really good very soon.

I'm sure we'll add another tackle, hope it's R4 or 5.

im all in on harrison as early as next year he will be penciled in as a starter on one of the tackles. dont forget the browns were very lucky last year with injuries on the line.

im going to say it no oline goes 2 years without an injury at one of the positions.
 
This is something PFF recently brought up.

Campen developed 4th round draft pick David Bakhtiari into the best OT in the NFL. So, how does his clay compare to the two new OT's.

3-cone is supposed to the THE athletic measurement for OT's. Well, it's thought to be their most predictive trait.

So, some numbers...

I'm a broken record but Forbes is such Packer/Campen pick it's absurd. Bahktiari IS Corbett or Forbes but stayed and grew at LT. He's not dimensionally ideal but he's really, really good. All three insane athletes (as is Bitonio).

I really think he's gonna be something in a year or two, competing to start. And our OL depth is fantastic for once.

This was reinforced when the team sent Desmond Harrison packing for arriving late. The former starting left tackle was not good in his rookie season, but he at least had a modicum of experience and familiarity with his teammates.

Now there is no seasoned depth at all to back up Greg Robinson or Chris Hubbard at the tackle spots. Neither of them will ever make fans forget Joe Thomas or even Doug Dieken, either. I have seen enough of Kendall Lamm from my days covering the Texans to know he’s not even Desmond Harrison. It sure seems like any notion of Austin Corbett returning to the tackle spot he played in college is gone, too.

So, Prospect X Forbes, RAS Star Fineanganofo, newly signed Ka’John Armstrong & 6’9” Seaton are the rest of the lot.
 
I think the Browns coaches disagree on Lamm. I keep reading they dig him a lot and he could even get into a competition at RT. My sense right now is that he and Forbes are the backup tackles. Interior depth is very good with the two who don't start (from Corbett, Kush, and Kalis). Plus the other vet with starting experience we brought in.

I have a strong feeling Campen will get the right five together and they'll be very good. But from right here, it's tough to figure anything but OL you'd target in R1 next April.
 
Didn't realize that the Browns are so happy with Forbes and that's why they were able to move on from Harrison so easily. Team loved what they saw in camps and have him slotted as a swing tackle and developmental LT.

Not shocked at all. Forbes feels like a Campen guy (think Bakhtiari), a smart, athletic prospect who may not ideal fit the arm length prototype but can play the position just fine. Today MK said he'll be tough to keep out of the starting lineup by 2020.
