The Offensive Line

It'll be interesting at RG. He's followed good games with bad or meh ones, but he's adjusting to RG. I get the sense the team would really, REALLY like him to nail down the job, because they have work to do at both tackles.

I think we'll go into the draft having already signed a fairly high-end OL. Can't imagine NOT leaning into it in free agency. Then we'll likely draft Wirfs or Wills depending on slot and roll with that: Bitonio and Tretter surrounded by the winners of a derby including a priority f/a, a 1st round pick, Teller, Forbes, and Lamm. Five guys for three spots.

Lamm's playing quite well.
 
I'm really liking the idea of paying, even overpaying, for the Colt's LT Anthony Castonzo. Whatever it takes to get him out of Indy. Pair him with Andrew Thomas, and we're looking at a very different line next year.

Castonzo, Thomas, Bitonio, Tretter, and ? (Teller? 2nd Rounder? FA?)
 
That's the concept for the OTs, I bet: Go pretty big in free agency and then double down in R1. I'm betting high our max number of rookie starters on the OL will be one.

RG is in-house, Teller V. Forbes. We have other needs so I just don't see a 2nd OL pick before another pipeline guy like Forbes.

FA would be Trent, Bulaga (seems like the favorite, Packers connection), or Castonzo. Daryl Williams? Will he hit the market? Draft pick should be Thomas, Wills, or Wirfs.
 
Castonzo is a top shelf dude (Rhodes scholar nominee back in the day). Would be a fitting follow-up to #73, tho the Colts have more cap space than God.

Wonder if the Giants, having won their way out of the Chase Young sweepstakes, will now look to cut cap on Nate Solder & pop a tackle. He isn't as clear of an upgrade on GRob, but we know the FO's long had interest in the 6'8" bookend. Also has close McDaniels ties.
 
Baltimore game - 3 of our top 5 graded offensive players were o-lineman.

Bitonio, Teller, and G-Rob.

Teller & Bitonio with elite pass blocking grades.

Teller is now grading in the middle of the NFL guard pack and climbing. He’s up next to Will Hernandez and way ahead of Corbett.

He’s known to be strong as an ox with a prototypical o-lineman personality, I’d be tempted to keep him & the IOL band together for 2020, and focus on OT’s.
 
The OL had another good day, continues to create a bigger space between reality and perception. Zero sacks, only 9 hurries, 6 on the line, 4 by the guy we know we're moving on from (Hubbard).

Point? Upgrading Hubbard to an elite RT level, like say Wills, would probably give the Browns an outstanding line next season. G-Rob, Bitonio, Tretter, Teller, Wills would be very good. I don't think we're keeping Robinson but I doubt whoever replaces him will be some stunning upgrade. He just hasn't been bad enough to allow for that. He's been pretty good.

Like Alo said, it could be a lateral move or slight upgrade... unless it's Trent Williams. My issue with that is it eats up our 2nd round pick and I'd love a safety there. If we can bring in a serious safety in free agency, I wouldn't hate Wills in one and Williams with the two.

But I also think keeping Robinson is likely to be pretty even-steven with anything else we can do. A matter of degrees.

And I bet the Browns will go into the offseason happy with their IOL. Bitonio, Tretter, and Teller will be locked in.
 
Yeah we need Tackles. The guards are plenty good enough though we could take a flyers late for a developmental addition more likely a center as Tretter seems to take a beating each and every year.

I'm not comfortable with GRob at LT though. He can play well enough at times, but it's inconsistent. I don't think we'll be the team to offer him the money and years he'll want on his next contract.

We have Morgan Burnett at safety and he was playing phenomenal ball in the pit until he got hurt. Here's hoping things were starting to click for him cause he'll be our SS starter next year. I don't know what happened to D Randall, but his play was nowhere near what we saw last year most of the time this year.

Donovan intimated that letting OBJ go might be better for Landry as he was better until OBJ got here and that the locker room has different cliques that players are into and they're not really a team. No real bonding as a team is going on except in small circles.

SS is also a position I would consider a luxury. Especially compared with problematic areas like OT. I'd be more than comfortable heading in to next season with Burnett, a mid-to-late rounder to develop and a cheap, under-the-radar type of free agent signing.

As for Randall, I genuinely think he just quit because the Browns aren't going to pay him the big money he wanted. Probably a long-way apart. Got injured to start the year, didn't play great by the time he got back, gave up knowing he'd blown his contract year.

But, fuck him, because Redwine looks good.

We should be okay at safety. Not to say we can't upgrade it, of course, but that fixing the protection is priority one and then we'll see if we keep Vernon, OBJ, Schobert, etc.

As for the smaller cliques thing, I can see that. Need some of the veterans to get guys together in the offseason and bond outside their personal groups. Needs to be a big family, not a fucking high school.

I think we're drafting or signing a safety on a high level, Beast. Have said so over and over. If we don't bring in a serious one in free agency, we'll use that 2nd round pick.

But Redwine, Murray, and Burris will all be in the equation, I bet.

On the line, we're gonna upgrade both tackles aggressively (unless Robinson moves to the right side, which I could see). I do not see a situation where our first pick isn't an OT. I think the interior is set.

Yeah, but nobody takes a pass on free agency unless they won 11 games or so. Talk about aggressive or passive is always hyperbolized, as least in my opinion. Browns will do work. They have to pay attention to the long-term viability of the cap and all that... but they'll do some work.

I think we have the advantage now of having high-end talent at key positions like QB, WR1, edge, corner, etc. But we could target a safety, an OT, and LB at a decent high level without breaking anything. And then usually 3 or 4 quieter signings.

Truth is, yeah, the line has been pretty damn good since that SF game, which was by far its worst. We haven't seen a QB under constant heat and we haven't struggled in the run game. A lot of what the media and draftnicks are writing is locked in early and only vaguely so I wouldn't use them as a news source, Beast.

Their simplistic overview of the Browns is underachieving, undisciplined, and line sucks. Latter was never really true but it's been about 4 games since any of them are true. We've pulled our shit together for the most part and had to do so against some of the league's best defenses.

The thing you don't want to do is get old trying to get better in FA.
 
Yeah, but you gotta play, Cliff. Belicheck built a Super Bowl team starting with 25 mid-range free agents. But totally agree, you build through the draft and finish with free agency.
 
FA is usually a stop gap while the rookies come into
there own, it’s never a bad thing to have a good veteran
on the squad,In a perfect world we should be able to sign
Schobert, just not 11million he thinks he is entitled to.
