Browns Trade! A 5th rounder for RT Tytus Howard

He's a very good pass blocker and decent run blocker. Solid.

Wayyyyy better than what a 5th rounder would have reliable brought.
I guess the Texans have too many other extensions, so getting a 5th for him is better than nothing.
Texans fans not very happy about it.

AB has said, he believes in using trades and free agency for need, then draft BPA. So, this lines up.

Younger and more durable than Conk.
And, we don't have to compete on the open market for him.

The Vegas 5th was via the Pickett trade
The Bengals 5th was via the Flacco trade

We'll find out soon which 5th was sent. We had three of them.

An initial Houston press take:

HOUSTON – The Texans traded a cornerstone of their offensive line for the second year in a row.

One year after trading five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil to the Washington Commanders, the Texans have agreed to trade versatile starting offensive lineman Tytus Howard to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick, per league sources.

He is signing a three-year, $63 million extension with $45 million in new money and an average per year of $21 million in new money, per a league sources. Howard is coming off a strong season. He allowed a 4.8 percent pressure rate, according to Next Gen Stats.

“I wasn’t surprised,” Howard told KPRC 2 in a telephone interview following the trade after the NFL scouting combine. “They’re trying to get younger and pay some guys. I ain’t mad. I kind of knew it was going to happen.”

The Texans are expected to use a combination of free agency and the NFL draft to overhaul their offensive line. The expectation is they will prioritize the offensive line and attempt to upgrade it through several methods. Without Howard, they’ve let go of a valuable blocker, though.

Some insider stuff
  • The details of the contract are likely from his agent, so it may be a little more Browns friendly than currently reported
  • Browns view him as a very strong pass blocker, average run blocker, and very Monken-able.
  • AB did NOT want to head into free agency with the OL room completely bare
  • Known to be a great guy for the locker room. Willingly played three positions last year to try to help out his team, which offers peace of mind and possibilities on how to build and sustain the front
  • The Texans have a pretty hard rule on not paying premium dollars for guys about to be 30. Howard is about to be 30 in May. The Texans stunned people by trading Laremy Tunsil. He was about to turn 30 at that time. Maybe it's smart, or maybe it's a silly rule.
  • The Browns don't feel they're paying for a declining and aging player, since he had his best year last year.
  • Flipping Kenny Pickett for a starting caliber lineman was too good go pass up.
