Why are colleges so liberal?

I clicked on this thread the other day after hammers post. Was surprised to see I was the one who started this thread 1.5 years ago as I can’t even remember doing it. CRS Syndrome!

Re read my posts. I guess my biggest issue with college (Rutgers) was it didn’t translate into any real world skills. Most classes in business in school just seemed like trying to understand a lot of abstract information of the likes I’ve never came across. Communication and leadership skills were never addressed. Additionally I started going too community college at night to try to get a better useful education. For example I’m taking a class now in computer applications to learn Excel better which I use a lot in my field. Interestingly enough my friends mom has a Masters in Business Administration but still didn’t know how to read the New York Stock exchange when she finished school.

I wasn’t the most keenly aware of politics when I was in school but even then I felt the classes had a sort of liberal vibe. My religion classes seem to teach what was wrong with the New and Old Testament versus as is. History teachers seem to throw down their liberal views as opposed to just report as was. What seem to get me as well was how I felt they pandered to working people’s sensibilities. It’s my experience with higher education. Just sayin
 
So if I’m hearing you right MMW,
you yourself had already indoctrinated your kids
right wing early on and your offended because the
schools they attend are liberal leaning?

The reason I ask is as a kid I didn’t care about
politics or the news, tv in general and my parents didn’t talk
politics which looking back I am glad I wasn’t
pre programmed,my childhood was more based
in morality,manners and a good work ethic.
My political thoughts didn’t really start till after I
became a parent and considered what kind of world
my children grew up in and no I never discussed politics
in front of them.

First off my parents never told me what party to vote for.(when I was old enough)
They voted for person not party.

Yet we talked about the daily affairs from the paper,mags,TV,etc. I could read the paper before I started schooling. because they took the time to teach me.
 
My father was a businessman (water well driller) and farmer and my mother was a stay at home on the farm Mom. My earliest political recollection was the 1952 election in which they both voted for Eisenhower. They voted at the lunch room at the schoolhouse and I remember my father coming home that night with the news that Stevenson had won the vote in our local farming community with 91 votes to Eisenhower's 81. I was 10 at the time.

I remember my mother saying that she voted straight Republican. (Eisenhower carried the state in 1952, but he was the only Republican who did. Oklahoma was strongly Democratic back then.) I think she voted straight Republican because she was fed up with Truman and the war in Korea. My older brother had recently been drafted into the army. He was still in basic training, and she was afraid he would have to go to Korea. As it turned out, he went to Germany instead, but when Eisenhower brought the Korean War to a close shortly after taking office, she was a fan for life. I think I was influenced more by my mother politically than my father. She was much more outspoken.

My earliest remembrance was The Nixon Kennedy debate. as a young boxing fan, looked like Nixon took the loss. next thing I recall was Jacqueline was doing the first televised tour of the White House. we were living in DC at the time.

Do you have some examples from them? I often hear about American universities being criticized for being a liberal stronghold but I'm not entirely sure what that entails - all I've really seen is that students are often able to either prevent controversial speakers from giving talks on campus.

I'm curious as to if more direct issues - are students saying there's unfairly treated if their assessments express conservative leanings, are they saying it's the environment on campus, etc.

It's so bad here my Aussie pal. the Lib's have played the Long game very well. over the past 40 years they(dem's Libs) control K-12 thru the teachers union. those have Let our Ed. system decline.

It's nearly impossible to fire one of them, unless they molest a child. even then there are cases of teachers moving to another state only to do it again.

If you are under 40 at this point their brains have been so washed. the example I use is the hitler youth. It's as bad as growing up in china or iran imo
 
So let’s get rid of teachers,civil servants etc,etc.
Why?
are you jealous that they have good healthcare
a pension and make a decent wage?
Charter schools will be the absolute death of
literacy in this country.
Instead of not liking teachers and there unions walk a mile in there
shoes whatever they make isn’t enough.
GM spent the workers pension fund and they got
nothing after working there whole lives to be able
to retire comfortably, is that fair?

Basically they keep their mouth closed as to how they really feel.

They learn which professor are extremists and avoid those classes.

They are there for the education and networking which comes from their particular university.


Not all the professors are wacked out libs, but even the conservative ones keep their opinions close to the vest so to speak.

They are all D1 athletes so a majority of there peers are also athletes and tend to be more conservative than the pansy left cowards.

The more prestigious the school its seems the drama queens seem to be less a factor because most students are focused on their studies in general. Your going to always have an opposing view wherever you attend.

Interesting. My grandson is a junior in high school, plays football and took his first recruiting trip this past weekend. Where he would really like to go is Oklahoma State, but the first letter he got was from Princeton. (He really isn't big enough to play at Oklahoma State.) So he an his mom got on a plane last Friday and flew to Newark for Princeton's game with Harvard. Understand that Princeton beat Harvard 30-24. Don't know if they will actually offer him, but I assume that he and his mom had a good time at the game. Haven't had a chance to talk to them about it yet.

The Ivys don’t give athletic scholarships for football. They will package aid that makes it affordable though.
They don’t officially ‘offer’ what they do is slot you, which means you’re acccepted into the school without going through the typical admissions process. They are D1FCS.
Good luck to him, Princeton is a great school and getting in to an Ivy is half the battle. Depending on his views he may want to avoid taking any stance one way or the other.

Didn't know that. All I actually know is that the kid got a letter inviting him for a visit and he and his mom took off for the weekend to attend a game and check it out. As for his political views, I really don't know. I am aware that both his parents are more conservative and religious than me and the kid appears to be as religious as they, so I would imagine that he is likely as conservative too.
 
I live close enough to Princeton and it truly is a beautiful campus
can’t say much about the curriculum as I didn’t get an invitation
but wow, congratulations Cliff, you must very proud of your son.
I’m truly happy for you!

You posted about a degree isn’t relevant to the job you take.
I agree with you one hundred percent,I think the true spirit
of an education is that your committed and completed your
studies.
That shows your hard working and you can complete the job
your applying for.
The military isn’t much different in that regard both are equally
challenging but you accomplished good things and hold an
honorable discharge that shows employers the same thing but
I’m sure college would tend to be more white collar.
