Let's remain rooted in the real world. If you'd rather "shut down the whole thing," that's a definite you thing, not a me thing. If you'd rather shut it down than engage in a necessary and pretty damn exciting social revolution, that's definitely on you. It's not all that scary to discuss and those who can't grow in that area aren't gonna be in the game anyway; they'll be way, way out on the margins on some nichey little racist website.

Baker Mayfield's stance is the biggest headline on the cover of the Cleveland Plain Dealer Sports section. It's the biggest Browns news my miles and miles. I brought it up... in a thread about Baker Mayfield.. and it became Church & State?

If it's that scary, sure. Okay. But don't project it onto me. Has to 100% be your issue. If you're remotely concerned about the wounded feelings of the nasty little pack of racist homophobes snaking around our fringes, guys like Ragnar who should've been banned ages ago? I'll happily let myself out. No real person should want to be part of that.

I love this joint and that includes scads of people who don't agree with me about 90% of the time. But when it comes to hate, we just all need to be against it 100% or move along to that nichey racist site. It's either that or gradually become it.

Very true. That much is part of the conversation. I would personally have no problem with that on the football board. But you invariably push the envelope into areas such as perceived motivation that rightly belong in Church and State. Yet you persistently avoid those conversations in their proper context here. I fail to understand your reluctance to engage in the proper contexts for such conversations. Perhaps you might explain.

Could it be that you prefer to issue your "not debatable" narratives where they can not be freely debated?

Feel free to set up a poll that explicitly explains how the political side of kneeling during the national anthem should be debated and hashed out on the football side of the forum

For what it is worth, here is my opinion. I agree with Ocon that we might as well let everybody do what they want because it will happen anyway. We have free expression rights in this country and this is a time of passion. Not saying that passion in this case is desirable, but it is what it is.

I agree with Shep that Baker will be right there with Jarvis and Odell.

Observations such as those, in my opinion, are appropriate for the football board.

I even think that mention of white and black players kneeling together and linking arms as an anticipated factual observation is grist for the football board. I think that is what we will see on the football field.

But I think that related subjects such as gun rights, the second amendment, policing, looting, protests peaceful or otherwise as well as mention of and debate about the existence and the nature of systemic racism within our society belongs on Church and State.

I would hope that most would agree with the above.

Not sure if "This Land Is Your Land" would be a good choice as a national anthem. It was meant as a response to Irving Berlin's overly sappy "God Bless America," and was originally titled "God Blessed America For Me" and the potential/perceived irony gets lost on a lot of people.

One verse Guthrie wrote but never recorded:

One bright sunny morning in the shadow of the steeple,
by the relief office I saw my people.
As they stood hungry,
I stood there wondering if God blessed America for me.

Another verse that he recorded (in 1944, but wasn't discovered until 1997) but never released when it was published:

There was a big high wall there that tried to stop me.

I'm sure Joseph McCarthy would have had an absolute field day with those two verses.

The point of his song can be seen in two different ways: 1. that America really wasn't made for you and me if you're among the downtrodden, or 2. that America WAS made for us all and we need to do a hell of a lot better of a job in making sure it remains so. It mostly depends on how much of a cynic or an optimist the listener is as to whether they choose interpretation 1 or 2.

I think you misquoted the last line of that verse. The way I heard it, the last line was:

"That side was make for you and me."

I understand that it might pose a problem for some, but as a libertarian, I have no problem with it at all. I happen to think that Woody Guthrie was an absolute genius who created an incomparable work of art when he wrote that song, and in my opinion, that song is worthy of becoming the national anthem of a nation founded on liberty and freedom of expression.

Speaking of genius, you ever read "The Bear" by William Faulkner?

A question for the admins: does it really make sense to step up moderation on a board that's only...what...10% as busy as it was at its peak? There's so much less to police, the ignore list option for irritated/irritating users has never been more practical — why go aggro?

Surely I'm not the only one who enjoys the slightly off-topic stuff (the aforementioned childhood stories, Ocon going all epidemiological jason j). Feels like there's a strong chance the board has to lean even more into that, should the season get curtailed and/or delayed.

If making a punitive point about political posts leads to all of that & perhaps more posters disappearing, is it really worth it?. Feels like a strange line in the sand to draw, at least in my half-informed opinion.

In my opinion, it is like I told Shep in that same thread when I said: "Shep, we ought to be able to talk about the pandemic and how it may or may not affect the playing of football this year without reference to talking points."

To be more accurate, I should have used "Democratic talking points" in lieu of "talking points" but I was trying to be as apolitical in that instance as possible while still getting the point across.

I could have saved my efforts. In Shep fashion, Shep resolutely plowed into a wholly unjustified attack blaming Trump for helping the virus spread in much the same way that he helped the Russians subvert our elections. What a joke!

In my personal opinion, Trump has been way ahead of the Democrats with regard to his reaction to the pandemic threat. In my opinion, their attacks on him for that are as absurd and hypocritical as their earlier criticisms for his conduct of the war against the ISIS caliphate.

I do have a couple of beefs with Trump, myself, however.

One is that he used the word "dominate" in addressing the recent protests. It was the wrong word. A better word would have been "control" referring to the need to maintain "control" of the streets. Sometimes the use of the wrong word is critical and sometimes it isn't. I think it was in that case. And even worse was his decision not to embrace the use of face coverings in regard to the coronavirus. I think that second mistake may actually cost him the election. I hope it does not, but I fear it will.

Perhaps, then, your frustration with Shep is less about any misdeeds, more about him being about as non-persuadable on those endpoint conclusions as you are.

Consider: you see his takes on Trump's handling of the federal response as being beyond the pale and worthy of censure; in turn, you smash that Like button on posts calling for Trump's purported enemies to be hanged.

That doesn't exactly strike me as true "spirit of liberty" stuff. Regardless, Happy 4th.

My issue with Shep has always been the condescension. Saying stuff like "you aren't human if you" don't agree with my viewpoint.

I may even agree with him on some of the stuff, but will fight like hell when another viewpoint is discarded like so much flotsam.

I find any discussion is not a discussion when there are attacks, labeling, dismissiveness, and condescension. I am more than happy to disagree and show respect, but only when it is also given.

Yeah, I agree with that. Understand, of course, that Mad is a true believer while I was originally a never-Trumper who discovered after the election that I agreed with some of the things he intended to do and, as a result, became something of a convert.

No. My frustration with Shep is that he won't post his political shit where I can counter it freely.

Instead, he posts it on the football board where I feel constrained and uncomfortable expressing a political point of view. Here I feel free. Back in November 2018, he actually opened a new thread here on Church and State entitled: "Just the Facts." I answered him, point by point. I anticipated that he would respond to my comments and we could have some fun with our differences. But it didn't happen. Apparently he prefers to spout his political biases on the football board where others feel constrained to respond. The following is a link to that thread.

Dunno if it's fair to criticize a guy who can't respond. But I will say: the fact that Shep's viewpoint evolves significantly over time should be a hint re: whether to be miffed about a fleeting moment of dismissiveness.

On some issues, he's probably now a few clicks to the left of the Bernie Bros he was putting down a few months ago.

The problem with Shep is he has Dunning Kruger Effect and he thinks he knows "Quarterbacks" when it's been shown consistently , he's muffed on about every one he's touted except Aaron Rodgers... his act gets old and tired.. He lives in this false narrative , then beats everyone over the head with it... He acts like every thread is about him and the two bit media punks he pushes on people.. I have no desire to read Jake the rapist or Soblow to get information that I can get from more reputable news sources.. I trust my own eyes.. whether I'm right or wrong...
